I visited the Sagrada Familia the first time I left the USA and went on a European vacation, I was in college. I was in awe a truly a work of art. My teenage daughter will be going to European (high school trip) in March 2015. She is looking forward to La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. We are making plans, as a family, to visit the Basilica when it is completed in 2026. Some people do not like the Sagrada Familia …. well…many people did not liked the Eifel Tower when it was in construction. Salutation from California, USA!

I visited the Sagrada Familia two weeks ago for the first time. I have to admit it is the most spectacular masterpiece I have ever seen. Standing facing the Nativity facade I was totally blown away by the incredulous beauty, I was transfixed by what I was looking at as was my daughter. When you walk around the circumference you realise just how enormous the structure is, truly an incredible achievement by so many masters of architecture and building. It was a tragedy that the master Gaudi lost his life under the wheels of a tram, to not be able to work longer on his masterpiece. Unfortunately we were unable to view the interior due to time constraints but will be returning without a doubt. Not to be missed.

I was able to travel to Spain last year and visited this place. On the bus ride, I had no idea that our tour would take us to the church (I was too excited to read the pamphlet in detail, lol). I remember riding on the bus and saw it from many blocks over, and the moment my eyes lay upon it, I gasped. It literally took my breath away. When the guide told us we would be visiting, I became so excited. When we came to the front doors, I wanted to capture everything in that moment, with my eyes and my camera. It really would take days just to go through everything on the facade, and upon entering, it is gorgeous. So large, sacred, and beautiful. Though it has a very architectural-like feel, it seemed both very grounded and earthy, yet celestial. The stained glass windows all have a meaning in the way their color scheme is set up as well, and the sunlight shining through them causes them to come alive. This creation is astounding for so many reasons, and I feel that anyone who visits, regardless of faith/creed, would find it amazing. It is a work of art, and the artist's passion definitely lives in this space. It is a beauty.

The church was hardly built so it wasn't anything like the work of art you see today, they had been opressed for years by god capital and state. He did quip though: "I think the Anarchists showed bad taste in not blowing it up when they had the chance, though they did hang a red and black banner between its spires." Orwell - Homage to Catalonia. I think Orwell was being a bit tongue-in-cheek. Thankfully the Sagrada Familia still stands today for all to appreciate.

Antoni Gaudí wasn't spanish as he didn't speak spanish but catalan. Sagrada familia was "his gift and a symbol of the universal values of a future and modern Catalonia" in his own words and he observed the architecture from around the world and from nature to create such a mixture of techniques. But he never considered himself as spanish as Spain was a dictatorship for centuries. Spanish dictatorships even tryed to censor and eliminate his political thoughts from history even modifying some of his sculptures and hiding all cataln flags designed by Gaudí in his buildings. The fact is that the favourite architecture of Gaudí was mudéjar and muslim architecture, more than gothic.

Amen..if only the officials wanted to do something about the pickpockets and the bad people in the police department-the situation could not be this obvious and broad,if there was not some kind of the blessing from the higher ranks.

It's fascinating and architecturally it is innovative. It is a testament to the him an spirit. It is deserving of all these accolades. It is the work of a genius. I admire that genius. I see Its intellectual beauty. It is not my aesthetic.

Actually, according to George Orwell, in his memoirs about the Spanish Civil War, Homage to Catalonia, the Sagrada Familia was (fortunately) spared during the spanish revolution because of its 'artistic value,'. But the Anarchists "did hang a red and black banner between its spires."
