I did almost ten years in maximum security, and while I can respect a person for a philosophical stance on non-violence, in places like that, choosing not to engage in violence (more often than not) just creates an even more ripened culture of predation where you live. Bullies get encouraged and emboldened by their victims and the victims of others. An appropriate amount of force is oftentimes the prefect deterrence to a future of violence. You can't speak poetry to someone who isn't a poet-- when you meet a swordsman, draw your sword.

My first time behind bars I had this old head, he'd been up the road and had to sit down for years and he made sure I was straight. So after my first 6 months I did the same with a youngin who had just came in. Bruh was nervous and didn't know how to move. "Don't sit over there, don't walk into anyone's house, don't accept no free shit, don't speak about your release date, don't talk about your charges, etc. There's a few brothers who'll look out for youngins but it's not as prevalent as it should be.

@StanHowse That is very true I don't wanna take anything away from that, BUT this is still something men need to know about respect. As my ma and pop said to me "it's easy to get into trouble... it's hard to get out of it." And people end up in situations all the time by complete bullshit we see it often "officer got questions just do what he says we'll sort it out later" well sorting it out later didn't end up so good! Buddy has to sit down for a min in a building with these type of people and while yes he learned about not going to jail/prison he still ended up there beit he wasn't listening, deserved it, complete accident, total bullshit GF lied on him WHATEVER the reason he still will be better off having learned this lesson. Because we all learn and need to learn shit that we never want to use: don't need gun safety I'll never use it, then you NEED to use it and don't know how or misuses it. I don't plan to ever be in that bad situation so I don't need to learn about how to manage it.... nah not quite how life comes at you. There's nothing wrong with this being taught to our young men in addition to being taught to not end up there in the 1st place.

I remember when Hillary came to an HBCU to talk about Prison reform and changing drug laws. And the Kids there set her straight "we are in a place of higher learning, the people you see here are going to be the Doctors, lawyers, Engineers and business owners of there community, what made you think that was the speech we need hear, when you see black is that what you think our first concern is?" it was not the first time that situation happened, but it never left whenever i see a comment thats similar in mindset. There is more to being black than dealing with the legacy of the US Prison system, there is more to being black than dealing with sentencing reform, there is more to being black than learning how to comport yourself in Prison. Do these talks need to happen with a segment of our community? without question But there are other concerns in my household, where will my kids go for a secondary education and how much debt will they leave those institutions with how affordable will housing be for young first time buyers.

I think it was because I was 35 and I have a calm demeanor. The woods kept asking me to chop it up with them but I always respectfully declined I rolled solo the whole time. Just mind your own business, don't talk on anything that doesn't involve you, and carry yourself like a man. As a black man, I honestly understand it now because I used to be the same way. If from your kid days you constantly hear 'fuck that ni**a', or the term 'bitch ass ni**a, frequently used in music and movies, that's how you associate all blacks. In turn I subconsciously hated my own for no reason. The mind is like a field and what is planted in it will grow, those seeds of hating people that looked like me were placed, and I fell for it. Thankfully I was able to self reflect and turn around my thinking. Now it's time to help others.

Did my TDC time in the 80's. Raza had their own thing for Christmas spreads. Since I was an older guy, I was kind of a de facto in charge of organizing who brings what, who cooks, who cleans, etc. There were 2 of the black dudes on the line that were around 19/20 years old. They came to me with respect, & asked to talk with me. They asked if they could contribute to the spread and take part. I had to tell them "no". Racial politics in TDC was really strict about mixing. Although there were black dudes who were undercover ears and were treated by Raza as intelligence, we never approached them, nor they us out in the open. Ok, day of the Christmas spread comes, it's on. Raza is having a peaceful, respectful good time with the spread. There was about 30 of us. We even had a bato who had a small batcha of "chock" that a few of us passed around. Much smoking, and talking, eating, and having a relaxing time. I had 2 sandwiches made up, full-packed, good, hot, roast beef sandwiches. I had them delivered to those two younger black dudes. Even though we could not fraternize, I still wanted them to know that We recognize them as humans, and valid individuals. I think they understood as well, and even though I wish I could say alliances were made; things had to go back to the normal flow (routines). You stay in your end, we stay on our end. It was a shame that black folks couldn't unite, even for just one night of the year, to just put down any conflicts, and just fellowship amoungst each other.

@@micheal16sore No. He gave the Mexicans a shout out. He was comparing how black people treat their own to how Mexicans treat their own. When he said "don't jump on him", he was talking about black inmates about to jump another black dude. They got upset when he told them to give the guy a fair fight. Because they took issue with it, he told them that no black person will fight another black person, period! Funny thing is, I used to think Ali was lying about his prison stay, but people have come out to confirm it. They literally said that Ali and the other older guys said that everyone 21 and under will take educational courses, those who refuse would get beat down. That account was backed up by another former inmate. So, he did have some clout in prison.

Glad he stood up for the guy! But I think he should've explained more about the setup. One person saying something with 2 or 3 ppl with him gives the impression that you're up against all of them. Especially if he or they are bigger than you! And often times they do rat pack or jump ppl. And sometimes checking in you gotta wait! So now you gotta deal with it.
