I've been in this industry for 40 years and I can tell you one thing. When the suits takeover they treat it like it's a zero-sum game and everybody loses, but when the devs takeover everybody wins, everybody.

Absolutely! As a newbie developer I pulled the ultimate "Fine, I'll do it..." and decided to take on Gadot 4 I'm sick of these crappy unfinished games that the suits keep forcing on us, because even something as simple as a flash game these days have a lot more soul put into them despite not having as much content as the triple A's

Godot is coming along leaps and bounds. I look forward to it being a total replacement for the slow-to-develop-for and closed-source Unity engine. Also, I hope they keep working on and improving gdscript, which imo is a fantastic scripting language :)

GDScript is actually really good. Coming from a long career and a lot of other languages, I've basically seen it all, written code in just about everything. At a certain point you just stop caring about a lot of the stupid ideological BS and want a simple, light syntax that's programmer-friendly above all else. One of the biggest things that sold me on the Godot engine was GDScript.That, and the FOSS stuff the talk in the video is about.

One Thing that Godot can do over time, is to take blender’s approach of eating their own dog food. Create small proof of concept games, which are actually shipping ready. Something more than the 3th person shooter demo. This will show the hidden problems in workflow and performance.

Every time Unity makes another baffling business decision, Godot is gaining interest. Writing after Unity posted about new pricing where devs need to pay $0,20 per install if they cross install amount and revenue thresholds. I hope they don't die, because competition is very important, and Unity collapsing would be a huge bummer fro the entire industry. In the meantime - go Godot!

The idea of developing something at a loss for the benefit of others is really interesting and in economics is called a "positive externality" - we often take it for granted (like building roads). Other things like public transport are also often unsustainable without doing what's known as "internalizing the externalities" through e.g. taxes, because it just isn't profitable otherwise - the "profits" are shared with society, rather than the transport body. Donating to the Godot project is a voluntary method of "internalizing the externalities" and supporting a social good... instead of having private roads with toll charges everywhere.

What's stopping the Godot Foundation ending off the same way as the Mozilla Foundation or the Wikimedia Foundation where the CEO's pull in 6+ figures from the donations whilst the people actually developing the system (Or writing the articles in the case of Wikipedia) get nothing?
@tapo9478
@tapo9478 3 ай бұрын
Mozilla is actually two parts, the (non-profit) Foundation and the (for-profit) Corporation, with the former owning the latter. The Corporation is the one that makes money, and it makes it from Google being the default search engine. The Corporation is also the one that pays its CEOs 6+ figure salaries, though it also pays full-time developers a competitive salary too. Donations go to the Foundation, and thats actually not directly used to fund Firefox but for internet advocacy work. It's a weird structure and it really doesn't do them any favors. Godot Foundation is directly funded by its users, who can pull funding if they get mad. The Foundation won't make its own Corporation because the major contributors to Godot already have their own, like Ramatak and W4 Games. The idea being that the Godot Foundation builds a neutral core platform that other companies can extend and sell games, consulting services, add-ons, etc.

I would be happy if the Godot Foundation released a mobile operating system, for example called Godot! Android is already tired: it takes up too much space on the phone (about 15 gigabytes), consumes a lot of memory, a lot of applications and games with ads, dependence on a Google account and other nasty things.
@CrimsonBlasphemy
@CrimsonBlasphemy Жыл бұрын
That may be Beyond the scope of what Godot is. What you're likely asking for is an ARM Linux distribution that can convince Phone OEMs to adopt it. Samsung is trying to fork Android basically, and disentangle from GooglePlay services, but the weight of content is just too great. Amazon's also tried with FireOS. When was the last time you Rooted your phone/tablet all the way and installed an Android fork that had the Google services stripped out? I recently did to bring a Boomer friend's 7" tablet back into compatibility for the Libbye library app. Which then meant I had to install Google Play Services anyways. Or are you suggesting that Godot try to position itself as the App development APIs for such an ARM Linux OS. Where Google/Android hijacked Java API calls. Allowing Java App programmers to jumpstart Android App development without having to either pay Oracle or learn new APIs from scratch?
