To celebrate 10 years of the MonsterVerse, we'll review every entry in this epic cinematic universe! We start with the original origins of the MonsterVerse, Godzilla Awakening, the prequel tie-in comic to Godzilla 2014. This de-canonized comic explored Monarch's beginnings and the discovery of Godzilla in the 1940s leading up to Dr. Serizawa's recruitment into Monarch in the 1980s.

i like the theory that this comic is just Eiji's memories and years all getting mixed up in his head either because of his old age/possible dementia

As helpful as that would be, I think the more likely option is just that they disowned it over at Legendary and it's non-canon.

Very good start to this project. You didn’t really savage Awakening and kept it in overall perspective of how it should be viewed.

Great review man. I agree, "rushed" is a perfect way to describe it. I did enjoy most of the art in it that was done by Arthur Adams. Great artist that did a lot of the art for Goji in the dark-horse comic days

Incredible rushed and clearly a cheap cash grab with limited quality control. And yet it still manages to be a fine Godzilla story. Arthur Adams is a super impressive artist. But I wasn’t in love with the work done inside this comic. That’s for sure.

I like the concept of Shinu Mora, maybe they can take elements/monsters from the comics (kind of kind GxK did with Tiamat) and bring them into future movies or spin-off shows

With the monsterverse I like to look at the comic now a days as one of the multiverse where only the 2014 movie and comic exists. Giving as 2014 was made before plans to make Godzilla vs Kong, it can be it's own timeline from the other movies/shows/comics.

@D Man. I enjoyed this and look forward to the rest of the series. But I did literally cringe at your pronunciation of the USS Nautilus. IRL it was one of the earliest nuclear submarines and it went down under mysterious circumstances. The submarine in the movie 20 Thousand Leagues Under the Sea was also named Nautilus. It was a favorite childhood movie of mine.

Grew up with this origin of Godzilla. Still a little bummed legacy of monsters retconned it, but oh well whatcha gonna do.

Fair enough. I remember reading it in 2014 and finding so many continuity errors and holes that I hated it and disowned it from day one. So for me, Legacy of Monsters was a super welcomed change.

@@DMan1954 that makes sense. I actually have yet to watch it, just learned about the awakening comic retcon. Maybe the retcon is a lot better written, and it HAS been a long time since I read awakening, so when I get to watching it I’ll try to be fair.

While not totally matching up with G14 this is supposed to fit with the original script before it was rewrote into the movie that it became (something you never/refuse to bring up). I say overall it's a flaw but decent read and a good set up for the Monsterverse to come. 5:40 he's trying to catch shinomora off guard.

The first Godzilla book that I bought. Bought it at a book fair or something in Malaysia when I was on vacation and visiting my cousins back in December 2019. Personally enjoyed it Also it’s SOFT canon, as some parts of it still remain, but it’s been retconned enough to the point you can skip it
