I don't like the Biollante idea. Its a plausible theory but I hope its not the case. It would turn it from a story of hope and redemption to a tragic tail of despair. A family restored only to be destroyed. Koishi loses his love and Akiko loses her mom again. Too sad to experience in a sequel. I would probably not watch it. The redemption story is what made Minus One so good. As quoted from Shawshank Redemption "Hope is a good thing...maybe the best of things." I would hope instead Noriko has a special connection to Godzilla that enables her to help defeat him . Perhaps Godzilla cells could be modified to act like a stem cell transplant for some remarkable purpose.

Okay...there is a problem....the oxygen destroyer isn't some weapon that saved the day. It killed not only Godzilla but the wildlife around it. Not only that Dr.serizawa took his life so this weapon won't be used in the wrong hands like the atomic bombs. The nuke might have ended the war but at a high cost.

I think Shin Godzilla better shows the pro nuclear but it was a we have to live with this instead of being all for it because many even out of Japan believe Nuclear anything is bad and should be ignored.

What a fantastic analysis. I have always disliked the use of the oxygen destroyer, because it has felt like using a bigger bomb to end the threat of another. Excellent work D-Man. Very thought-provoking!

this is a very interesting video but i do disagree with the use of the oxygen destroyer being a direct metaphor for the use of the atomic bombs. to me, the message of the oxygen destroyer is that the use of the atomic bomb set us down the path of an endless arms race where more and more powerful weapons keep getting made. the oxygen destroyer only had to be used because the atomic bombs were dropped and woke up godzilla. WMDs necessitate the creation and use of more WMDs. i always saw the main point of the oxygen destroyer being that it came after. i don't think it's a symbol of the nuke. this is a really thought provoking video though even if i do disagree with some parts
@DMan1954
@DMan1954 2 күн бұрын
Fair enough. I think it's a pretty direct symbol because the characters are constantly drawing the parallel. They compare the Oxygen Destroyer to the atomic bomb more than they compare Godzilla to the Hydrogen Bomb in the movie. I've always seen it as a representation of how WMDs are part of an endless cycle where they will just keep getting bigger and bigger and worse and worse unless humanity finds more wisdom behind their use and creation.
@Pasta_Priest
@Pasta_Priest 2 күн бұрын
A WMD must be used to stop the product of WMD’s. The film states that the first time one was ever used it began an endless cycle unless those responsible are willing to die to protect humanity

This is why the first Gojira movies is a true masterpiece. There are so many hidden deep messages, and possible interpretations for every fan. Unfortunately Legendary Godzilla movies will never even attempt to dwell into those kinds of realistic problems which is kinda sad.

I noticed some of these ideas a while ago, specifically the comparisons between the oxygen destroyer and nuclear energy, with Serizawa wanting to find a more beneficial use for it rather than using it as a weapon and how it's similar to humanity's use of nuclear energy (with it historically being used as both a power source and as a weapon). I ended up bringing it up once in an online discussion, unfortunately it resulted in other fans getting angry, with them insinuating that I didn't understand the Godzilla franchise. So it's interesting to see other people in the fandom bringing up similar points as well.

I have observed that with any weapon, there must be a certain motive behind its use. It must be used wisely, and not just for power or control. There has to be certain factors in play. The Oxygen Destroyer was used to get rid of the threat, which was Gojira, the nuclear allegory. This weapon, however, could also cause damage that not even nuclear weapons could come close to, which was clearly stated throughout the film, and even in later films such as Godzilla vs Destroyah and King of the Monsters (1956 version). That being said, I personally am stictly against using nuclear weaponry for *any* reason, no matter how "good" or "right" the motive may seem. As a side note, I *love* your use of Minus One's OST alongside the 1954 score in this video essay, D-Man! So powerful!

it's basically telling us to use nuclear energy as just that, a way to power nations as CLEAN energy, way cleaner than coal and oil, and can power it for probably decades if maintained in a reasonable manner, using it as weapons of mass destruction and it'll cost us everything and everyone around us.

Godzilla (1954) and King Kong (1933) were both movies I enjoyed in my youth (in the 60s). But (too many) years later I was thrilled to discover great stories, great acting, and great movies. As always, thank you so very much for the videos. I (pre-teen) was also fortunate to visit, and live in, several countries outside my native California, and was fascinated by the different outlooks and feelings about war. This included Australia (Darwin), Tokyo Japan, and Southern England.

Actually, having Godzilla IRL wouldn't be so bad. We could probably use more nuclear energy with him around to clean up any leaks or messes. To keep him from attacking, we'd just have to locate him and send a nuclear submarine his way for him to feed on before he makes landfall.

I would love to see a backstory of Serizawa. His other experiments, his war years, his deeper relationships with the Yamanes, etc. I think it would make for an interesting movie, but it probably would not have Godzilla or be Godzilla dominated, so I doubt Toho would ever touch a project like that.

I like the mystery. He was a war hero, but we never learn about his time in war. He's a brilliant scientist, but we only ever meet him after he's created his worst invention. He's to be engaged to Emiko, but by the time the film starts, he's abandoned his humanity and become a shut-in. It adds this mystery to him that works so well!

@@DMan1954 I don’t have any issues with that. I think that we have characters that don’t need a back story but are given one regardless - Han Solo anyone?! But with Serizawa, I think that it would be rather intriguing (if it is well written). His early experiments and his war record which gave him his notoriety. And heck to make it all official (and for a little fun nod), after the war, we do see him befriend an American newspaper man who writes about his accomplishments - Mr. Steve Martin! 😁
