When the character Godzilla was first created, the setting was Dinosaurs that had survived unbeknownst to people were exposed to American hydrogen bomb tests, and he were transformed into monsters that exhale atomic breath. Godzilla-1.0 is a work that goes back to that initial setting. So, Godzilla is both a symbol of war and nuclear weapons, and at the same time he is war/nuclear victim (as a result of being involved in a hydrogen bomb test, he transformed into monster regardless of the his intention). Godzilla in this film, when he exhales atomic breath, his own mouth and face is burned. It looks like he is suffering by having uncontrolled violent energy. Because he survived the hydrogen bomb test, he transformed monster, and he has too much uncontrollable energy. It's painful even when he’s alive. He was angry at human, and also he may have been looking for a place to die. He is a threat that people must overcome, and it is also a test for regaining the meaning of life left behind in war. In the sense, Godzilla sank into the sea holding remorse and pain caused by the war. What's important is that Godzilla isn't completely evil. He is also one character whose life was derailed by war. Instead of dividing it into two simple colors of evil and justice, they are appealing how disastrous and meaningless war is. Negative emotional chains sometimes lead to explosive violence. Godzilla's Atomic Breath is expressed by a nuclear chain reaction. And all that is left after violence is emptiness, and no one can be saved. There's just an endless chain of negativity waiting. The main character, Shikishima, didn't forget his kindness. But Godzilla was different. A victim of the hydrogen bomb test became a the perpetrator who hurt himself and his surroundings due to being drunk in anger, and finally defeated.

I'm seeing it for the 8th time tomorrow it's the only movie in some time that I feel compelled to see that many times on the big screen. It's just a great cinema experience, the characters, score, story, and effects especially for it's small budget still amazes me.

Your brothers-in-arm in "特別災害対策本部/Special Disaster Task Force" are following your path! In my case, I've seen the film for 4 times so far, and my next confrontation with the raging sea god will be at the B/W Godzilla -1.0/C, coming next month here in Tokyo!

I've seen this movie today in a japanese theater It was funny to see people of all ages, including elderlies, gathering to watch a "monster movie" I am not a fan of blockbusters and Gozilla either but gosh, this was one of the best drama/action movie I've ever seen and the best japanese blockbuster I've seen so far I am very astonished to see they managed to do better than most recent Hollywood movies with such a small budget and tv drama actors It's such a good drama about post war Japan and a epic movie at the same time, with good pacing and really cool sound design and colorimetry Please go to theater to watch it

Seen 3 times, and not once lost it charm. There where many great scenes, but for me one scene has become my favourite, and its the entrire operation Wadatsumi. Its when Godzilla is lured back in to the sea and the actual operation begins, and the score kicks in, and from there till the end of the operation it was joy ride...

You could take Godzilla out of this and still have a solid post war drama about Japanese citizens rebuilding after the war. It's also funny that even with Godzilla, it's still more historically accurate then 2023's Napoleon.

Saw the film yesterday with my family. This movie needs to win an Academy Award. By far the best Godzilla movie ever made. I don’t know how they made this film on less than $50M. I’m going back to see it in IMAX if possible.

I've seen this film several times already, (I've never been a repeat viewer at the theatre level) I saw it first in 4dx at Cineworld in the UK (release day), OH MY GOD the whole experience was absolutely mind blowing and is the best cinema experience I've had in 20+ years. Even after being out here in the UK for two weeks now, I managed to see it again in 4dx on Friday 29th December, I also saw it IMAX, (I love Cineworld 😂) I even took my two daughters the youngest is 11, they both absolutely loved it, It's the most money I've ever spent on a movie and it's worth every penny.

My favorite scenes from this movie is from human characters and not Godzilla himself. If this movie didn’t have Godzilla and was about a kamikaze pilot dealing with survivals guilt after ww2 while taking care of a family he never planned having it still is a great movie!!!!!

The Author must be a historian. The "Tokyo Fire Bombing" really happened. A new Bomber & Incendiary Bomb developed with the intention to "Rain Fire" on the civilian's of Tokyo. In the movie, it's Couple & Child, all their parents where killed on that one night. The "Tokyo Fire Bombing", mankind's worst, had more casualties & lost in history to the Hiroshima Bomb Very touching. Second viewing, I could ignore the subtitles and view the Settings & Props. Factual & Historical, too many to list. My favorite was the wartime '37 Japanese manufactured Harley Davidson Motorcycle. Super Cool!

Except if the guy had had the balls to shoot Godzilla while he was still basically a dinosaur maybe he could have killed him. So anything he does after is too little too late. Plus the end is a cop out.

I'll watch it when they dub it because I can't sit around listening to that terrible language. Dub it on bluray then I'll see it. And I'm not caring about the people, they started the war and are lucky we allowed them to live. Should have turned the country to a glass ornament. They made it cheap because they don't pay their people a living wage

Judging by your comments, films like this are not for you anyway. Most of what it is about will go way over your head. Stay with entertainment that fits your mental capacity. I'm thinking perhaps some of the childrens' cartoons or maybe rooster fights? You say Japan started the war. It is surprising that there are people even more ignorant than neonazis, some of the stupidest people on Earth. Even they know that WW2 started, not by a Japanese action, but in September 1939 when an army led by a man called Hitler invaded Poland. Japan entered the war a year later. Though the United States, Germany, the U.K. and Japan all did very regrettable things in WW2, as an American, I think it is significant that Japan's surprise Pearl Harbor attack In December 1941 was on ships and military personnel, not women and children in American cities, and further, the women and children in Japanese cities who were intentionally attacked later by American strategic bombing had no choice or responsibility for the Pearl Harbor or other Japanese military actions. Nevertheless, hundreds of thousands of them were killed and injured with napalm, bombs, and nuclear weapons. People who don't care about innocents in whatever country getting slaughtered like that are even worse than ordinary bigots. To me, they're simply garbage. As for the idea that people working on a major motion picture in Japan or other skilled work don't make a "living wage", people who have lived and worked there like myself know this isn't true. The standard of living is higher in Japan than in the United States, and since "living wage" means affording room and board, I'll point to the fact that it is hard to find any homeless people in Japan, while sadly we know of thousands to tens of thousands of documented ones in all U.S. cities of moderate size. Also, apartment and food expenses in Tokyo were less for me living in an apartment in walking distance to an entertainment studio in Tokyo than they were in an apartment in a U.S. suburb with a far, far lower quality of life. People rarely immigrate from Japan to the U.S. of course because of the disparity in the standard of living. Immigrants to the U.S. come mainly from Mexico, India, China, Philippines, Vietnam, Cuba, and some others, but not from Japan. So why can a fantastic movie like GMO be made for such a smaller budget than in the United States? You don't work in the industry, can't read Japanese work information materials and, I have to assume, don't know any Japanese people in skilled jobs. Many of the reasons for the different budget are obvious. You may see ten different companies doing some part of special effects in a U.S. film and they will get a ton of money ($65M for VFX in Avengers: Endgame for example), where GMO had a much smaller, obviously very highly skilled (and well paid) group of people to work on effects. Director Yamazaki himself had three different highly skilled jobs in the film himself. Successful Japanese actors like Ms. Minami Hamabe (Noriko) make enough in their careers so they'll live very well in a wonderful city for the rest of their lives, but wouldn't get paid $10 million just for one movie. The marketing cost disparity is obvious; they pour it on in a tacky superhero film hoping to recoup hundreds of millions, while a film as good as GMO doesn't need all that marketing because everyone knows it's great and wants to see it. Underlying these things is a difference in cultural ideas of what's important in life. In the United States, sadly, many people running companies seem to value making the most possible money to extremes, at all costs, over the joy and pride of providing something special to people. I think the latter was the priority for Toho, Director Yamazaki, and people working on GMO.
