If you haven't seen the film yet, I recommend watching up until the spoiler section, then leave, watch the film, come back, watch the film again, and then join the spoiler discussion. This movie is bonkers.

While appreciating your film analysis, another big earthquake hit Japan, my country as well as “the motherland” for this brutal force of nature/nuclear destruction. It was scary enough despite I live in Tokyo that is hundreds kilometres away from the epicentre in Noto Peninsula. So far, all nuclear power plants are intact, the tsunamis weren’t as high as of at the time of Fukushima disaster and the casualties seems relatively few thanks to all the precautions the government and each citizen have taken… We may not be able to completely kill Godzilla and he will come back, but we prepare and struggle to survive every time such a raging god of disasters comes back landfall. Thanks for your nice review, anyway.

I saw it 5 times. Agree the downbeat ending was slightly upsetting, but that goes to show how effective the film is to make a jaded modern audience crave a purely happy ending.

Saw it 3x, a 4th of /c comes to the states. To me the score setup the scenes so much. There was an angelic opera in the background for both times we saw the atomic breathe, almost like if Godzilla using the nuke was the power of angels/God and this is what happens when humans try to play God. Such a great movie, i teared up especially during Koichis "you all are just a dream" breakdown.

I never thought of it that way but that’s a good catch. That scene is so powerful. Now I can watch that scene with that perspective when I see it again, thanks!

The black blood in her veins is septic blood. She’s dying from radiation poisoning. As Godzilla represents people’s grief and trauma from the war. Rage and martyrdom are useless but with community and family trauma can be healed, but never undone. It’s a cruel reality that these are things we can not control or defeat, simply things we have to live with as part of the human condition, sometimes it takes people from us before their time.

I’ve liked the Godzilla corpus since I was a kid, but didn’t contemplate any deeper societal meaning than “beware of nuclear hubris” till this picture. There could be many metaphors for Godzilla here, but I think the one that makes most sense could be the Japanese rejection of the militarism that led them to commit the atrocities of WW2. Militarism that existed as the primordial beast at the beginning consuming Japan’s own to the hideously mutated nuclear armed beast it becomes. The militaries of the various countries can’t deal with it (they are strangely preoccupied staring at each others navels), so a people’s militia must summon just enough martial spirit to take on the existential threat (not sure why they salute it at the end, though?). I think read this way, it’s actually a hopeful sign of the maturation of the Japanese psyche and perhaps a positive step towards them owning the demons of their past.

Excellent review! I agree with you 100%. The movie's themes of hope, triumph and survival definitely earned its happy ending! I missed the black mark on Noriko's neck when I watched the film for the first time. Of course, I did notice it upon subsequent viewings (I've seen the film five times to date), but I think director Yamazaki just wanted to leave the door open for an exploration of what you mentioned at the end of "Shin Godzilla." However, it's subtle enough that it could signify a number of things and doesn't necessarily mean that Noriko will turn into a Godzilla-like humanoid monster. Ultimately, Toho may never pick up this thread and it will forever remain a mystery. Even Godzilla's regeneration at the end is not definitive. A shark could still come along and start devouring Godzilla's remains or something. Of course, because of the movie's success, we will certainly see another Toho Godzilla movie, even if it's not a direct sequel to this one.

Hey thanks! Those are all good points. You’re right it’s unlikely they’ll pick up from that thread again. I do hope to see this version of Godzilla again though.

@@CepiTheNomad Oh, absolutely! This version of Godzilla is powerful, threatening, and scary. If you will allow me to be a bit cynical for a moment, though: The themes that Yamazaki tackled in this movie were certainly profound and moving. He is an expert filmmaker. However, it is much easier to make a great movie when you have the emotional foundation that Yamazaki built. Is it even possible for him to make another great movie, say, remaking "Godzilla vs. Megalon"? Now don't get me wrong. I LOVE movies like "Godzilla vs. Megalon." I grew up on these films, and I think they are a lot of fun. There's just not a lot of depth. The kid in me wants to see this Godzilla battle another monster. If Yamazaki can remake a film like "Godzilla vs. Megalon" and make it great, then he would truly deserve an Oscar! 😁

@@scottarooni no that’s honestly a good thing to ask! I was thinking something similar, how do they replicate the emotional center of this film? Can they even do it if they do a monster on monster battle film? I believe they can I just don’t have the answers. I might make a video on this topic actually haha

@@CepiTheNomad Yes, I'd love to hear your expanded thoughts if you make a video on this topic. The 1999 film "Gamera: Revenge of Iris" tackles a theme of vengeance using kaiju, and the 2002 film "Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla" has a similar theme. However, I don't think either film delves as deeply into those themes as "Minus One."
