I don't know what happened to the American kaiju movies. Godzilla (2014) had a very serious atmosphere surrounding the monsters and showed the aftermath of what such a creature was capable of. It felt grounded enough to be believable. Not to forget it having fantastic cinematography and incredible sound design. I just don't understand why they shifted the tone from Godzilla (2014) to, well, this cookie cutter ADHD explosion. It couldn't just be the money though

I think this is the current equivalent of the Michael Bay Transformers movies. Some people just want to see more of what they enjoy, while others will rightfully criticize what's wrong with it. Neither side is wrong or right about it. There's always going to be an audience who are going to see and support Kaiju movies like this in the theater.

Such a fun movie. Seeing Godzilla Mothra and Kong together for the first time in Kaiju history fighting skar king and shimo is just awesome. Seeing how the monsters interact with each other is so fun to watch. Gave me war of the Gargantuans/son of Godzilla vibes. This is definitely a showa era movie from the mid 60s and that's fun

I adored Godzilla X Kong, but Mike isn’t wrong on alot of the stuff he says. It’s just that stuff doesn’t really matter to me personally. When you get a sorta showa Godzilla/Kong throwback, it makes me feel like a kid again and it’s great taking my kid to see big monster hit other big monster lol

Godzilla Minus One and The New Empire are on the complete opposite end of extremes, and I’m just sitting here wanting something that has a mix of both. Great characters and writing, but also plenty of kickass action. I don’t know why Hollywood can’t get it right

This was a VERY typical American monster action movie, if you are going into this movie expecting any more than that you are going to be disappointed and I think this is something we all expected to happen anyway, I don’t know why people are making a big deal about it when they knew exactly what they were going into!

I honestly wasn’t expecting you to review this movie. Usually you and I’s opinions are relatively on the same page, but definitely not this time. Now to be clear some of the stuff you’re saying about this movie isn’t necessarily wrong, but I think a lot of the critiques are very nitpicky for the most part. Especially given the type of movie you’re reviewing. I definitely don’t think the CGI/special effects are nearly as bad as you’re implying. In fact I thought most of special effects were done pretty well. As for the characters yeah they’re not going to impress you if the other MV films haven’t. They’re not the most interesting characters, but they serve their purpose. The narrative is clearly focused on the monsters and the story we do see revolving around them is done well in my opinion. I think comparing this film to Minus One is done in bad faith. These two films are clearly trying to pay tribute to two very different aspects of the franchise’s legacy. If you went into this film with Minus One expectations then you only sabotaged your own experience. Not the directors or the rest of the team. I don’t think Takashi Yamazaki would approve of his work being used to discredit other works in the franchise. Look, I still love you man. I still really love your content and look forward to watching more reviews, but I definitely couldn’t disagree with you more on this one.

Idk man I got what I wanted out of it. Sure, the script was incredibly dumb, could have taken out about 75% of anything having humans but when this movie is trying to cook, it cooks. I'd give it a 6.8 outta 10... It's all about setting your expectations properly before going in.

I've been watching godzilla movies since I was a kid. To me, seeing godzilla in this way, and the monsters from the Japanese movies being exposed in big budget movies, it's just incredible. I do see what you are saying, though. After a while, they do all become the same movie.

Eh. These are those types of Movies where I'm perfectly fine with the same thing. I want a Godzilla Movie where Giant, Cool looking Monsters Fight and Kill each other. That's all I want. Hell, I want more of it during! 😆 I fell out of the _Transformers_ and _The Fast and The Furious_ Movies a *looong* time ago because they got ridiculous and the *exact* same... But for Godzilla (and Kong), that works. That's the point of Godzilla Movies, for them to be Awesome, yet mindlessly Destructive! I don't want an actual Script or Story for these Movies. A little extra Lore for Godzilla and Kong, their Monsters and Worlds are fine, But I just want to see them Fight and Destroy shit. Same works here - in my opinion. 🙂 But, for possible new stuff... Two things I think they should do for future Godzilla, Kong, Monsterverse Movies... Either *completely* get rid of the Human Characters; other than possibly Nobody/No-Name Victims. We're *all* here for the Kickass Monsters beating the shit outta each other... *That's* it! We don't give a crap about the Humans and their lives/problems in these Movies! Or... Make Jason Statham the Protagonist/Lead. Him/His Character made the Meg Movies Entertaining, because him/his *Character* was Entertaining! So a Godzilla and/or Kong Movie with him could be fun; where the Human Character's are actually as Entertaining as the Monsters!

Nobody talks about how good the 2014 Godzilla was. The tone, the mysterious cinematography, the way they use Godzilla sparingly, the way the direction shows his size, even the characters weren’t dumb as shit in that one. The recent monster verse movies are cool but they’re so goofy and over the top. Disappointing stuff

Thank you so much for this review. All the other youtubers I follow are being weirdly nice to this. Like, what else did you expect? Ummmm, I love dumb fun movies, but this isn't fun at all. My IMDb review echoes so many of your points: I keep coming back to these movies. Over and over. I love monster movies and can enjoy dumb-fun action. I'm the exact target audience. How do they continue to fail? Aside from Godzilla (2014), they range from mediocre to terrible. And GxK is no different. I know most reviews will compare this to Godzilla Minus One. But I have to. Every single Godzilla shot from Minus One is better than every single shot of him in GxK. Every single action scene in Minus One is better than every single one in GxK. Better story, characters, dialogue, emotional investment. Everything. Minus One is better in every way. The worst thing I can say about GxK is... I was so bored. And I didn't care about anything that was happening. Zero investment. This is partly because it doesn't really have a story. Stuff just happens. Halfway through, I still didn't know what the story was about, what conflict we might be heading to, any kind of build up of a threat. They continue with another useless human plot, completely formulaic and bland. One of the only positives is a highly talented cast. They're just not given anything to work with. Rebecca Hall is the only one who gets to show her talent. Even worse is the 50+ comedic attempts. I laughed twice. The nearly sold out crowd laughed a few times. The rest made me cringe. They're like dad jokes. The entirety of the human story is basically a kids movie. What about the titans? They rarely show the scale of these monsters. Most of the time it's from the perspective of the monsters, not the humans. So they always look like they're 6 feet tall, with everything around just smaller. Even the movements are so fast like humans are fighting. When they fall, they fall in a second. No ground-shaking impact. It feels so fake and nowhere close to epic. I'm not anti-CGI, but the big action scenes are hectic gibberish. I give up. It shouldn't be this difficult. I don't even need it to be a "good" movie. Just entertaining with good action. Instead I get forgettable and dumb. (1 viewing, opening Thursday IMAX 3/28/2024)

It's just a Showa era Godzilla movie, I dug it

Apparently this film had the lowest budget out of all the Monsterverse films which explains why it comes off like a cheaply produced cash-grab.

It's clearly not a movie for you, when you say people watch the same movie over and over you sounded like my mom when she told me my legos were the same, I don't like people that can't appreciate a reletively good movie and start being pesky.

It is basically Transformers to me. I've never understood the draw of those movies.

This movie is loud, dumb, silly and colorful. All in a good awesome way!! This film is NOT for everybody! If you are looking for Godzilla Minus One plot, story and character development, you're not getting it. What you are getting is a monster mash tag team romp that will satisfy people looking to have a two hour amusement park ride. People should already know what they are walking into when you watch the trailer and TV spots of the film. After all, the people that walk out the film with a smile on their face are the winners!! Either way fans of both genre wins both Minus One and Godzilla X Kong. If you dislike it, that's fine, cannot please everyone, if you enjoyed it (coming from the majority of the audiences) then you are the real winners!

I’m going to see this today for all the reasons you said. I’m not going to see it thinking it’s an academy award movie. Just a fun movie I can cheer for two classic creatures. Godzilla One I watched because of the great film it was. You know what you get. My concern, is the critics want w writhing to be a film of the year. If the fans are giving this a 90 and critics are 50……maybe the critics aren’t in touch with what people want?

I think the reason as to why the Monster-Verse is still thriving today is because they are not stretching out their resource too thin, having frequency and quality and people loving both Godzilla and Kong and people liking giant monsters fighting. I do get your points about the human characters, and I think they should write them better. There is some who are passionate about these movies and that's fine. Minus One is a call back to the original 54 movie and the Monster-Verse is inspired from the Showa Era where it started off serious and then insane later on. Also, the budget for the movie is $135 million if you were asking. Plus, there's nothing wrong with liking Transformers and Fast and The Furious and you should not be ashamed for it. Even Christipher Nolan likes Fast and The Furious. Also, each movie is released in every 2 to 3 years. Godzilla (2014), Kong Skull Island (2017), Godzilla King of The Monsters (2019), Godzilla X Kong (2021) Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023) and now this movie. Simply they didn't overexaggerate the market they took their time with these movies. The problem with Marvel now is that they keep stretching out its resources too much and focus on quantity over quality and they took advantage of the general audience's trust. I did like some stuff (Wakanda forever, Multiverse of Madness, GOTG Vol 3, Loki S1 and 2, Shang Chi, Wandavision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye and NWH which think were decent. Hopefully since Bob Iger said that they are going to be restructuring the MCU's release plan, reducing its output and focusing more on established properties they can try to fix their mistake. Also, not every movie has to have Godzilla to just only be a commentary of nuclear warfare and if he was just that in every movie it would be boring in the later movies. Godzilla's original context symbolized the horror of nuclear weapons, Godzilla as a character overtime has represented different themes and narratives and has been in different genres. In the Monster-Verse. He's someone who restores balance to nature and it is something in the Monster-Verse movies talk about and he isn't afraid to lay waste to human soil. he is also listed as threat to national security at the start to king of the monsters. Godzilla can be Superman and a villain who just wants to destroy humans.

This movie is to GODZILLA 2014 what BATMAN AND ROBIN was to BATMAN 1989 AND BATMAN RETURNS or what Moonraker was to James Bond. They started as something believable and serious and someone else turned them later into goofy cartoons. Being a fan of GODZILLA and tokusatsu cinema and tv doesn’t mean that I cannot dustinguish quality from trash, and as a healthy fan I always want quality, I don't consume and blindly deffend everything because it says "Godzilla" on it. Yes, the Showa era exists, but that was its OWN thing, and it was terrible, no point on hiding it, BUT this ultra goofy cartoon is NOT its own thing, it is supposed to be a CONTINUATION of a movie where Bryan Cranston, crying with a broken soul, had to sacrifice his wife and colleagues to save the city and his son, and he had to say goodbye while she was dying in front of him, a movie where they tried to give weight and REALISM to a creature of more than 300m height and thousands of tons in weight, where they tried to put on screen the consequences of its destruction and existence in the REAL world. That was the hook, what was promised to the fans, it didn't delivered that promise as well as GODZILLA-1 did, but it was a stept on the right direction, and that promise existed precisely because this franchise wanted to be NOTHING LIKE GODZILLA 1998. How did we get from that 2014 movie to this? How is that progress? Goofy movies are fun and have their space in cinema, a bigger place than what they deserve, but I repeat, that is when they ARE THEIR OWN THING and not a continuation. Yet this one goes an extra mille in stupidity which makes it insulting. After so many times complaining about studios telling us to "turn off our brain" when did you, the raging fans decided to obey and celebrate that? Have some integrity! GODZILLA-1 and everything from Nolan prove that movies can be intelligent and entertaining at the same time again, no excuse! Specially GODZILLA-1 reminded us 3 important things: 1 - You can have an intelligent, engaging, and even inspiring story and visual spectacle at the same time. Thay they cannot exist together is an old lazy writers' lie. 2 - People do like human characters, when they are well writen and important for the plot. These movies dont work without them, they are the ones that suffer the consequences of the destruction and as the audirnce we need that. 3 - Millions of dollars on visual efects worth are nothing if points 1 and 2 are not checked. IF you as fan complained of movies for being shallow, dumb and for treating the audience as stupid cattle, but you deffend this movie precisely for being all that, don't you dare to trash Batman and Robin, Transformers, anything from Michael Bay, Uwe Boll, Fast and Furious, Jurassic World, sharknado, Birdemic, The Room, again, because that's called DOUBLE STANDARDS. Mike I think the reason people keep seeing these movies is because it's simply giant monsters on a giant screen. The music that accompanies the monsters is always great. The spectacle, as you said. Most people don't even expect the story to be good. Just gimme big meaty monsters slapping their meat together.

Why do horror movies get to be the same old sh*t but Godzilla doesn’t? I’m a horror fan and for me monsters are adjacent genre. Godzilla has had so many different movie tones, I feel like a blessed fan that got minus 1 and GXK within 6 months of each other. This movie is f*cking insane and is aware it’s a giant Saturday morning cartoon mixed with the WWE. I’m sure we all didn’t go into this movie expecting Oscar performances or an Oscar worthy script. My friends and I were laughing and cheering with the movie the entire time.

As someone who grew up watching old showa movies with my grandfather i loved it. Me and my grandpa connected through movies and this honestly made me feel like i was with him again watching his favorite giant lizard. Loved it. Plus its better than whatever marvel is doing now.

Just watched it last night. Absolutely terrible and a waste of $20 to rent. 1. Human characters are dumb/unfunny. Felt no attachment to any of them. 2. Human storyline was dumb/unnecessary. Little girl was annoying. 3. CG effects were bad, "too" CG. 4. Kong trying to be goofy/funny. Baby Kong was unfunny and annoying, wanted it to die right away in the movie along with the vet doctor guy (cue stupid music every time he popped up) and vlogger guy. Oh, and the deaf girl. 5. Godzilla running. 6. Forced humor really ruined this movie.

Just watched it. Nothing made me say “wow” “omg” or “that’s crazy asf”. It really was real generic bullshit. The only thing of value in this movie is kong building a relationship. This movies are turning into what happens to the avengers. Same story different bad guys. Anti hero bs. And plot armored human characters

The first Godzilla was solid & Kong was alright. The rest have been terrible stories but solid monster mashes. Growing up with Godzilla, I've seen it all & boy was a lot of that s**t weird but I loved it all. I'm down for just a good monster movie & it looks just like that & nothing more. ALLLLL that said, would I love a good story AND good monster fights, of course! Godzilla is my one guilty pleasure where I just want my Godzilla to be a GOD!
