Have you ever stopped to think about how much waste you produce? In this engaging talk, Hayley Higdon explores the impacts of waste and explains the benefits that living a zero waste lifestyle can have on the individual and society.
Haley is an environmentalist who works at the Jackman Institute of Child Studies, an elementary school affiliated with U of T that is devoted to studying childhood development. She is the Project Lead for Natural Curiosity, the environmental Inquiry Program at the school. Just having won U of T’s Green Ribbon award, recognizing outstanding achievements in campus sustainability, Haley shares her zero-waste lifestyle and tips for making small changes into sustainable habits on her social media blogs, under the title 50 Shades of Green.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I'm so glad many people are inspired by "Zero Waste Home". I live in Japan, but I was really inspired! It's difficult to live like Be a in Japan, but more and more people are taking action in this country as well.

Bulk stores are scarce and close to 3X cost here. Also, pretty much all their foods are sugar, starch (sugar) or industrial seed oils, and shipped from as far away as possible

I dont understand why Northamericans need straws so bad. I never ever bought straws in my life. In my country is very rare that u find starws in houses (except for some birthday party or nightclubs)

Yes I find the straw thing baffling too - but I see a lot of mason jar drinks glasses in the shops with straws now, and it seems to be becoming more popular in the UK to drink through a straw even at home - I have sensitive teeth so I always ask for no ice, but even with sensitive teeth I don’t feel the need to use a straw.

I know right! I really don't see the point of drinking with a straw. And using a reusable straw looks really hard to wash!

Some people have sensitive teeth so drinking cold water can be annoying. Also certain drinks like coffee and tea stain teeth and having a straw can prevent it. Some people who are quadriplegic also need straws too. Reusable straws usually come with a little cleaning thing to make sure you can clean it properly.

Why a grown up without a disability should use a straw baffles me. It is a very recent phenomenon. Don’t drink stuff that rots your teeth, put up with the fact your teeth may not glow white all day.

If you go to a bar and order a "shooter" instead of a drink you won't be given a straw and you won't have to pee as often while getting the same amount of alcohol.

Honking car locking wakes people up and creates Noise Stress Everywhere. We can hear it in our homes when you park. It wakes our kids up. The Auto Industry needs to use technology that does not emit noise into our communities. Please lock your car quietly with light flash only. Thank you.

Going vegan doesn't actually mean that you automatically become zero waste. Almonds, for example, are very wasteful to the enviroment since ONE almond takes 5 LITRES to grow. The almond farmers in LA are a big cause for the extensive droughts and wildfires there.
