WCS Westcoast Salt, welcome to another talk shxt get bit shed yarn, this week going through the ins and outs of our dirk hartog island land based trip.
i go through all the rods and reels i used, what leaders, what knots i connect the leaders with, the rigging & how we fight and land the fish
i go thrrough catching the pelagic fish like spanish mackerel & then move onto the reef fish side of things, explaining how we target baldchin grouper and snapper
finally i give a run down on how we got there and go throigh the camp setup
-----------------------------
Gas balloon fishing & spinning lures for huge spanish mackerel, climbing rocks in persuit of XOS baldchin grouper & spearfishing sharky waters to catch dinner, watch on as we do it all

Hey mate great series on your trip its one of the better ones for DHI on youtube ! Ive done this trip 3 times staying at the block you may have even seen my name in there :) just a quick queery we never seem to have any luck on the metals? most of the mackies came from rapala xraps and other various stick baits. You are certainly not the only one to say that the knights are the best lure to use so i might have to give them more of a go on my next trip in 2024
@WCSwestcoastsalt
@WCSwestcoastsalt 11 ай бұрын
Thanks mate 🤟🏽 The x raps can be a good lure, you get a lot of other species with those, trevally etc The best thing about the metal is it covers the whole water column not just the top, the Mack’s often sit deep Good luck on the next trip mate 🤟🏽

Hi mate ive fished DHI and Quobba many times and a few time by myself and personally think you only need a rope gaff when the fish gets above 5 kg anything under that can be winched up, even got an 8 kg tuna up at high rock quobba on my own only using 40 lbs mono had to hand winch it with a glove on tough work by yourself.
@WCSwestcoastsalt
@WCSwestcoastsalt 11 ай бұрын
Yeah hand winching works good if you’ve got gloves handy and a leader that makes it to the top of the ledge is ideal Yeah I’m more around that 4kg mark, when it gets to that I rather use the cliff gaff rather than risk the rod winch technique as I’ve seen a too many lost on the way up
@WCSwestcoastsalt
@WCSwestcoastsalt 11 ай бұрын
Guess the height of the cliff also comes into play here, if it’s a low ledge then yeah even 5 plus I’d winch because it’s such a short time, but when you start winching 25-30m cliffs it’ seems a long time for extra pressure on the fish

Awesome vid thanks. Your bottom bouncing rig does your ball sinker go all way to the hooks or is there a swivel beforehand?
@WCSwestcoastsalt
@WCSwestcoastsalt 6 ай бұрын
Goes all the way to the hook, no swivel, this helps Eliminate snags plus keeps it simple to re rig

@WCSwestcoastsalt
@WCSwestcoastsalt 11 ай бұрын
No worries mate hope you got something out of it, too be honest it’s never become an issue as they don’t last long enough, they get bit or sharked so quick they don’t get time to rust

Good run down mate. What single hooks you changing out to on the knights?
@WCSwestcoastsalt

Hey mate we just match the same size that they come with, if trebles use the same and if single hook just match the same profile size

Just a note guys you can use hydrogen as your gas. Al Barker let me use one of his bottles and it had double the lift! Gas weighs less then half of helium.
@WCSwestcoastsalt
@WCSwestcoastsalt 5 ай бұрын
Yeah we’ve used it with a b years ago, it gets more lift that’s for sure Downside is it’s highly flammable and harder to get hold off

@@WCSwestcoastsalt true it is falmmable. A plumber or boiler maker can get them for you. Saves on cost but I'm guessing your concern is that it's dangerous. I love the vids so keep them up. Droning out mackbaits might open up some more hits.

Hey mate any advice on where to go looking for lower ledges to target pinkies with light gear on soft plastics on the island? Got a trip coming in October and ill be wearing the collab jumper 🤙
@WCSwestcoastsalt
@WCSwestcoastsalt 11 ай бұрын
Yeah on the inside of the island up top can be good for plastics if the swells up Other wise if you’ve got low swell just search around the whole of the Westside any ledge you can get down to is worth a cast Try baits too. Ball sinker Single hook Feel free to send in pics repping the colab hood, good luck mate 🤟🏽

So basically just turtle bay if the swell's up? Will send pics! 👍talk shit get bit!
@WCSwestcoastsalt
@WCSwestcoastsalt 11 ай бұрын
Even around from there, lighthouse bay you can get down When the swells up you can still fish the open ledges on the Westside it’s just a bit harder and plastics can be harder work

Awesome video - just wondering what you've had go wrong with generators in the past? We run a honda and seems pretty reliable.
@WCSwestcoastsalt
@WCSwestcoastsalt 11 ай бұрын
Cheers mate Yeah they are very reliable but I’ve seen a few instances Low oil catches ppl out, especially if running 24 hours for two weeks that’s over 300 hours The pull cord snapping is a good one, bit tricky to fix Not starting because of old fuel blocking the jets, bread tie wire fixes that one And the worst a big storm coming and flooding the generator

Hey Skip I'm doing a trip with the boys next year one thing I need to know is how much extra fuel to bring were staying closer to the homestead and travelling each day north would 4 Jerry's be enough for 8 days cheers
@WCSwestcoastsalt
@WCSwestcoastsalt 11 ай бұрын
Hey mate that’s a tricky one it really depends on how much fuel that car uses and how heavy you are loaded on the way up At best you’ve got a 12 hour return 4x4 trip from overlander so have yo plan for that, then once your at Dhi it depends if you fish the ledge your camping at or go driving each day to different ledges to fish We are always moving around so bring extra fuel with us
@WCSwestcoastsalt
@WCSwestcoastsalt 11 ай бұрын
And yeah if staying at the homestead you could burn a lot of fuel driving out to the other side each day

Ahh glad the fillets went to use mate, what a spot !!! To be honest for bottom fishing I haven’t found tides playing too much of a part there, we plan a lot of pelagic fishing around tides but the bottom fishing I feel you can get bit any time, tide changes help, but they seem to chew anytime ! Hope you have a good trip mate, and the weather gods play the part !!

I've enjoyed your adventures. Never fished dirk Hartog myself, but have fished steep point, which was fun flicking lures from the fault line. One thing that may help your channel is the catch phrase "talk shit get bit" is over used, and may alienate some potential subscribers. Don't mean to be a prude. But I feel a bit cringe sometimes.
