Going UNDER the McMurdo SEA ICE!

When looking out over the Sea Ice from McMurdo, it’s impossible not to wonder what’s underneath. Sadly, it’s incredibly difficult to get the privilege to dive at McMurdo and see it like that, but fortunately, there is a different way! Check out the video to see the McMurdo Ob Tube!🙌😍

I am currently living and working at the South Pole Station through the United States Antarctic Program. I am not down here as a filmmaker or photographer, but instead work in the Logistics and Supply department. All of these videos are being made during my free time and not during working hours. We are very busy down here keeping the station running at maximum efficiency, but I have managed to find some free time to make these short movies!

~ Whaaaaat?!! So very very cool...words can’t even accurately describe the “coolness” of that experience (especially your actual experience)!! That is such a genius invention and the fact that you have access to it is incredible!! I don’t know if I would be brave enough to go down there because I would be thinking - as I was while you were in there - that the lid might get shut and you know, the proceeding thoughts/panic that might ensue! Haha! 😅 Love the views and the sounds...and haha, your expression and head jerk when you heard the sound again! 😂 Thanks again for sharing a one-of-a-kind video experience!!

Ahh thank you so much!! You are too kind 😊 It really is an awesome thing that they’ve done and it gives people a chance to see what it looks like under the ice! I will say, you actually do need to close the lid to block out the light from above so you can see better. So the bigger worry is getting locked in 😜 But thank you!! And yeah, the seals were pretty exciting to hear! Such goofy sounds 😊 Thank you so much! I really appreciate it and I’m really happy you enjoyed the video 😊

Great video I just wish he would have panned the camera around 360 to show all the windows, floor, ceiling and pointed the camera up the tube so we could see how far down under the ice he was. He really didn’t show that much of the area he was sitting in. For instance how big is the area? Mostly his face.

I’m so glad your videos are popping up in my suggestions ! Great stuff ! Just wondering .... what was the approximate temperature when you filmed this ? I’ve seen several Antarctica videos and it seems that we dress heavier for winter here in the northeast US 😂

They must screen job applicants for phobias. Especially for the South Pole. I imagine the psych eval is pretty detailed.

Interestingly enough they’re currently revamping the process. To do summers there is no psych evaluation at all. Winters at pole had them, and they’re just now getting rid of them. Instead there is more intense interviewing and actual teamwork exercises that they do before going to the ice to figure out what is going to work. After many years they *usually* have a pretty good idea of what to look for in people!
