Isn't using stainless steel as the anode even worse than what you're describing? By using stainless steel you will build up iron ions in the solution which will be much more thermodynamically favorable in plating? Iron has a much lower reduction potential than gold, and thermodynamics will favor iron plating. So yes, definitely use a gold plate as anode.

I don't believe you'd need to use anything special for that Because glass and stones aren't conductive enough to be plated

@@bojackson3073 to my understanding you want a fresh nickel coating because even a fingerprint or any irregularity will mess up the gold plating. The cleaner the finish the better the plating. I’m looking to plate my vintage Gillette safety razors. I’m going to start with nickel because the solution for rhodium is so expensive like $1000 for 1g at this moment. A mistake can be costly. There’s more to just dipping and dunking. For example the voltage needs to be at 2.7v and it generally takes about 90sec to plate the whole razor. Any variation and the plating won’t take.

@@Jeff4559 Do you mean we can buy from them? I've never bought anything from them. Also, I'm not a chemist but over the years I've been told the darker the solution, the more pure it is in strength. For instance I bought a 14k yellow gold from Italy that is as clear as water and does work good but typically buy from Gold Plating Solutions company which theirs is a very deep dark purple and I was told that is because it's stronger in real gold content. I bought from another company once the same 14k gold and it was red. They said the same thing even though it didn't make their product look good. They said their product which was red was due to having only 1gram of gold per liter of solution compared to the purple one I use which has 2grams of gold per liter. Whether this is all true or not, I really don't know so I'm making no claims here, just relaying what I've been told. and yes, I do spring for the 2grams of gold per liter to get better coatings and longer lasting solutions. Being a jeweler I go through a lot of it so I need to purchase in bulk but if you are just a hobbyist, maybe you don't. Thanks for the reply Jeff.

@@nimster64 I honestly don't shop for the best price, I look for value by quality which you can do by making sure you check out how many grams of actual gold is in a container of gold plating solution. One liter solution from one company may only contain half a gram of gold while another contains 2 grams in the same liter. With that being said, I typically purchase my Gold solutions out of Italy and I'll have to get the name for you because it escapes me at this time. The other brand I purchase a lot is gold plating solutions inc.
