I've never heard of a gold sprinkled edge! It's more visually interesting than solid gold in my opinion. As a fledgling book binder (I've made two text blocks and no covers so far) I have to thank you for your videos. They're so clear with what you're doing, and I always appreciate WHY you do something (even when it's "because that's how all the masters do it"). Thank you so much for sharing your passion and taking the time to teach us. Keep up the good work!

I'm glad you get a boost from the comments and interactions. For me, every time you post a video, it's my first watch of the day. I'd like to think I know a little about bookbinding. I've done it (as a hobby) for years, and I have books that my father bound in the 50s. But I can't think of a single video of yours I haven't learned something from or thought about in a different way. I'm so happy you get enough from it to keep making more. Here's to the next 50!

Really liked the presentation of sprinkled gold. Have had a couple of goes at doing this, but had not been told about waiting for the size to last about 30 seconds. Getting that information made a lot of difference.

I have loads of book binding books, love the subject, have lots of materials and have even make some tool but I have only managed book blocks so far. with your vidio help I think I might actually try and make some covers.

Oh 😲 I understand now : I read why to use the Talc -PREPARATIONS Before placing the book into the press, the edge needs to be dusted with talc. Talc (magnesium silicate hydroxide and sometimes called French chalk), keeps the pages from sticking together during the wet processes which follow. Do not use the talc manufactured for babies: it may contain silicone (which will resist the wet preparations) or it may actually be cornstarch (better for the baby, but for us it functions as an adhesive).! 💖👍🏻

Absolutely - just for you! I wish I was better at edge gilding. Practice! Once I can competently and repeatably do a rounded fore-edge I'll do a proper solid edge gilding video. Have only just taken on this challenge. Doing the fore-edge in the rough is much easier - but maybe not easy:)

i am a certified book binder unfortunately my 2 year course that was offered in my country covers all aspects of binding but we only touch on edge decoration i love the finishing of a book so i must do research and i came across this video i am going to watch the others thank you for showing your work

Believe it or not, I prefer the dappled gold edge. Solid gold leaf scratches so easily and this one is more forgiving.

We all start somewhere. While it can be frustrating it's better to make do than not to get started. I still make do in some areas considering the work I do. Even though I have a nice old board cutter I envy shops that can cut the full width of a roll of book cloth on the board cutter. It would save me so much time. Happy binding and take care, DAS

I would love to see a real-time video of on how to make your chemicals. Almost like a cooking show. Your book paste, your gold gilding liquids. But not in a fast forward setting. Also maybe if because I'm in America there are different products I could use or buy. the fast forwarding you do always confuses me I know there's a lot of repetitiveness but when it comes to the the chemicals and the liquids I can really use a slow down version and maybe even a product detail of where to buy or what to buy.

Sorry the speed is not helping you. I have started adding materials lists to all new videos and will go back and add to old videos - slowly. I'm including sources in as many regions as possible. I'm afraid YT videos that move slowly don't do well and the common wisdom is that poor performing videos can damage your channel. I am also doing short more specific videos. Once I've done a few more videos on different edge gilding techniques I might do an overview of glaire and size used in edge decoration. But I'll try and prioritise the materials list for this video. Thanks! Yes, I made these myself. The smaller size of gold leaf is 80mm. So I made the frame 100mm square. The material is organza silk.

Hi! Newbie bookbinder here! First of, thank you for clearing up so many of my roadblocks on this journey. I have two questions; (1) If I wanted to add a different colour instead of the red bol underneath the gold sprinkles at what stage would I do that? (2) Also, what type of brush are your using to push the gold through the mesh? I know you said a toothbrush would work, but yours seems to be doing a great job. Thank you.

At the 4 minute mark. Paint on your colour instead of the bole. If you don;t want to use bole before preparing the edge, just paint on size. The brush is from a pack of 3 I bought on impulse at an office supply store because it was on sale. I'm sure they are hog bristle 10mm diameter and 20mm long. They may have been described as stencil brushes. Happy binding!!

First step in preparing the edge. Okay, maybe second. Right after cutting the edge either on the guillotine or with the plough. Change to the gilding boards and then smooth the edge by scrapping then sanding. For a long time I didn't have gilding boards and just used square pieces of wood. Worked, but I now have a higher success rate.

Very nice! I've never used gold leaf, but I'm curious if this would work with the "imitation" gold leaf.

I'm not sure if imitation gold leaf is a metal beaten out very thin. If so, maybe. Gold is so malleable which is why it can be beaten so thin. I suspect any other metal couldn't be beaten so thin, and thus would be too strong to brush through the sieve. 1 book of gold leaf will do a lot of projects and is not super expensive. I won't go as far as to say it's cheap. All the best, DAS

The black stripes in the book with yellow and black was done with graphite. I did a workshop with a master of graphite edges last year. My work looks very pedestrian compared to his. It's on the list. The basics are simpler than you might think. Do the same edge prep as for the gold. Get the very fine powdered artists graphite. Use a 1:8 egg glaire instead of the PVA size to mix with the graphite. Make it the same milk consistency of the bole. Apply just like a solid colour. But before burnishing use a thumb or finger to rub the graphite into the edge in a circular motion to get an even coverage. If you use bare fingers everything you touch for the next few days will get a black finger print:). Then burnish. To get the highly polished metallic black look takes lots of burnishing and coats of bees wax.

@@DASBookbinding hmm, I think that will have to wait until I have more equipment. One beginener-friendly alternative I've been experimenting with is to sand the edge smooth then rub a piece of carbon paper on it vigorously (I usually wrap it around a sponge). Once burnished with wax it gives a dark shiny edge. Not as nice as actual graphite but more within my capabilities for the moment.

It looks like you already rounded and backed this book before you did this edge gilding. If you wanted to do this to all three edges, would you gild the fore edge first, and then round the book before proceeding to the head and tail?

Yes. But rounded and backs first. Yes, if you want to do the fore-edge, do it before rounding. It is possible to guild a rounded fore-edge. I've not managed it yet. You probably could sprinkle with gold after rounding.

I would just add it to the total for the book. Maybe 15 minutes for sprinkled edges. Foiling for the covers depends on whether it's just a title. I've never had dies made, but I know someone that does. It would be his time plus the cost of dies. But I wouldn't do just the edges of a book someone brings to me. It's part of the package. Then it depends on your hourly rate. Mine is $120/hr

You’d be surprised how many hobby binders have this gear. It’s no more expensive than say a good sewing machine. But some boards and wood clamps will work for this project. All the best. DAS
