I discovered DB in August 1981, I heard Ashes to ashes on the radio when Iwas 13, and I immediately KNEW there was no one like him, i i went to a record store and with my allowance and I bought 13 of his LP's , including Aladin Sane, without knowing anything about him, It warms my heart to no end that people are still having the same reaction . Thanks Pope

Hey! This is not just a coincidence, this is me: “I discovered DB in August 1981, I heard Ashes to Ashes on the radio when I was 13, and I immediately KNEW there was no one like him”. Word by word what happened to me (born oct. 68)! I was tidying up my room while recording some music from the radio, then Ashes to Ashes went out and my life took the right way. Still got that tape!!!

If you think Mike Garson's piano playing on this song is fab (and it is), wait til you hear him on the title song. His solo on that is one of the most extraordinary things ever heard on a pop record.

WELL. Now you HAVE TO watch, "The Runaways", with Dakota Fanning, and Micheal Shannon, and Kristen Stewart. Seriously. You would love it. It is a gem, and has a lot of references to this particular album. It is a fantastic movie that captures the time when "punk rock" was starting to pop- better than any movie I have ever seen (and I was there for it).

Hi Pópe, also, please react to the live performance of David bowie singing America. He sits on stage and plays a Suzuki Omnichord ! This was in 2001 when he helped a lot in the aftermath of the world trade centers collapsing. He was one of the main helpers behind the scene. This is the opening song of the 9/11 concert for the fireman and rescuers.

@@TheoZoffrok I thought it was magnificent in a different way than the GQ award show. I wish I was talking in person ..so much to say but I'll try and put it in a nutshell. You see, I'm old...hahahahaha! I have had the distinct pleasure to grow up literally with Bowie. I was a mere 11 years old when I fell in love with him. That's crazy. Eleven years old! I am now 62 so with each album or change he made , I got to witness and/or experience it all. I never faded away even when the album "Never Let me Down" came out. hahahahahahhaa! So, that immediately pulled me back to my preteen years. WOW! I remember the excitement I felt when I heard this man who was nothing like anything or anyone on the planet. So, as I've aged and so did Bowie, I enjoyed tremendously the GQ performance because I heard the control and experience in his voice. And he sounded more mature so listen, any way I get to hear Bowie is ALWAYS something special in it for me.. I still miss him terribly. Always will. I believe there will never be another quite like him.

Hi Pôpe ! As usual, you've got the best analogies 😂 : Discovering Bowie songs really feels like you're Beauty discovering the Beast's castle. Every song is a new room, every room is filled with strange, fascinating and sometimes weird and unsettling things. But there's no boring room in this huge castle, you may have noticed already 😉. Keep up the good work!

Legendary backing singer Claudia Lennear says the song is about her and that claim is believable because they were tight back then and Lennear had supermodel looks that also inspired The Rolling Stones tune "Brown Sugar". Aladdin Sane is a great record. I have it on cd, but if you're gonna go for whole albums at a time, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars might make for a better start. Then again, maybe start with Hunky Dory, then Ziggy Stardust, then Aladdin Sane -- in chronological order so that you can hear how his early musical ideas developed from year to year.

One of his most beautiful, romantic, and sensuous songs. Inspired by an African-American Session Musician that he found to be 'a rare soul with unbelievable musical gifts.' He was always fascinated by a woman's inner beauty--David was so very enlightened compared with most other men. (Another belief of David's that Iman said was absolute fact. And Iman herself graduated from college in Nairobi at the age of 17. Her university major was political science. Iman was herself a powerhouse intellectual.)
