Set building is a big part of making a Lego stop motion, or "brickfilm". When you see the incredible sets created by animators such as Alexander Studios, it can seem like a huge challenge. But don't worry - it's okay to start small and simple.
This tutorial will show you how to build a basic set for your brickfilm, even if you don't have very much Lego, or if you've never made a stop motion before. Don't stress when making your first stop motion, just keep things simple and have fun.
If you need more stop motion and brickfilm tips, please check out my other tutorial videos:

Nice, clear instructions. I like how you show that you can do stop motion with what you have around, like a cell phone and cereal box. Before I found out about stop motion apps, I thought you needed a special camera and expensive program. What I like about stop motion is that no matter what you use for it you can make it look like magic, one shot at a time. Thumbs up. Frutz wuz here.

Yes, I feel the same way, I feel it's an art form that almost anyone can do, well except people who live in real poverty, of which there are sadly still quite a lot in the world, but yeah for most people it's pretty accessible even for kids :-)

If you don't have a baseplate use pieces of lego. If you don't have lego use card paper. If you don't have card paper use a cereal box. If you don't have a cereal box use literally anything.

Thank you for this! I have a few questions 1. What app do you use to make brick films? 2. What is the clay/putty you use to stick the baseplate to the table? 3. How do you set up your light(s)? I am getting into lego stop motion but am trying to improve, your tutorials help alot!
@GoldPuffin
@GoldPuffin 4 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for the questions. Here are my answers: 1. I take photos on a DSLR and edit in Adobe Premiere Pro 2. It's called Blu Tack and it's made by a company called Bostik. You can buy it in stationary stores, supermarkets and online 3. I vary the light set up depending on the video I am making. The standard set up is just one light on each side at the front of the desk, raised about 40cm above the height of the desk. But you really need to play around and adjust according to what looks good for your own set up.

@GoldPuffin
@GoldPuffin 5 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, that's a bit of a problem with the genuine Lego baseplates! I forgot to mention about that! You can just put the bricks on the front of them though for standing them up, and then put something in front so that the bricks on the baseplate don't show. And no, that's not an actual brickfilm that I'm working on, but I did have an idea for using the tiger chasing people in the woods. I'm just not sure if I'm ever going to make it or not.

You're welcome, I'm glad this was useful! :-) To be honest, for most of my stop motion videos I just took the photos on my DSLR camera (which is a Canon EOS 750D, although I was using Canon EOS 1200D before) and then turned the photos into video clips and edited the video using Adobe Premier Pro CS3. But since Adobe Premier Pro stopped working on my laptop, I replaced it with Hitfilm Express which is a free program. If you want an app to use on your tablet or phone, the best one is Stop Motion Studio (or Stop Motion Studio Pro if you are willing to pay a few dollars). If you are using a laptop and DSLR camera then Dragonframe is the best, and that is what I'm going to buy when I get back into stop motion soon.

@GoldPuffin
@GoldPuffin Жыл бұрын
When I've done animation on a mobile I used Stop Motion Studio. (I did also try PicPac as well which was okay, and also Clayframes Lite which was also okay). Normally I just use my Canon camera and HitFilm Express on my laptop these days but that's not really a proper stop motion set up - I need to get Dragonframe. Anyway, if you're on mobile/tablet I recommend Stop Motion Studio

But i have a problem! My motorcycles just fall how can i make them stable even if im doing a step for it?
@GoldPuffin
@GoldPuffin 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know, motorcycles are difficult to work with. You have to be really careful when you move them. It helps if either you have a very flat surface, or if you move them across a baseplate because the studs help to keep them upright. But the main thing is to keep a very steady hand when you move them.

Hey I have a problem with setup. I have 2 baseplates 1 for the floor and 1 for the sky and it has a reflection how do I stop the reflection.?

It's hard to say without actually seeing it. My advice would be to change the angle of your lighting and/ or to add more lights. Changing the angle of light will change the angle the light is reflected at. Adding anothee light pointing at the place where the reflection is could cover up the reflected light

You can also go the cheap way by taking your brickfilms mostly in a biulding.

Yes, if you mean like just building one Lego set which is a house and then doing all the stop motions inside it, or just building three walls with a few windows and a door in them, and adding some furniture - yes, that's a pretty good solution.

I have questions for you! Yeah you reading this..If you make stopmotions please answer these questions: 1: What app or software do you use? 2: What FPS or frames per second do you use? 3: Are you new to stopmotion or experienced? 4: Do you use clay, or legos? Thats it, I will be pleased to see what you respond with!

I’m not sure of all the answers because this is the first video of his I’m watching but one of his answers was 1. I take photos on a DSLR and edit in Adobe Premiere Pro As another commentator also asked

Things have changed. I still use a DSLR (Canon EOS 740D) but now I use Hitfilm Express instead of Adobe Premiere Pro because Adobe removed support for my product and I could no longer use it despite having paid nearly £300 for the license when I bought it a few years ago! I use 12 or 15 FPS most of the time. I am not new to stop motion but I am not as experienced as I would like because I've been making lots of other types of videos instead. I use Lego - I've never used clay.

Okay!! I use stop motion studio, and your videos are amazing, and it is probably just that you are professional, or your editing skills are really good.
