This method improved my iron distance by 1 to 1 1/2 clubs and accuracy is terrific. However I found twisting during backswing and downswing difficult so I simply twist at setup and keep it that way through the swing - easy!

Eric, I learned the 70s,80s and 90s era of the golf swing (hand shake on the takeaway, toe towards the sky) since my return after 20 years I have been incorporating this move and it is so simple for purring the golf ball. Yes back in the day I played golf every day and hit countless of thousands of balls each year so timing was not that big of an issue. Today, Keeping the clubface square ( it feels shut to me LOL) is so simple. Just turn and turn.

Eric, all your tutorials are incredibly useful and interesting. This twisting also helps to reach a somewhat lower trajectory, especially needed for the driver. One day you should summarize in a video all these little parameters that a golf should test on the range. Amateur golf don’t ever imagine the number of parameters to be tested to better understand their game. Parameters at posture, takeaway, downswing, contact, finish. You address all these in your various videos but viewers don’t watch them all. It could serve as a kind of appendix for intermediate and good golfers who want a better understanding of what they can work on.

Hey, Louis! Thanks for the feedback! The fear there would be that video would be VERY long and perhaps much too much information for people to absorb. We shall see! I’m going to keep updating this because I believe in it and Eric’s teaching. Last Saturday I won my flight and some $$$ skins with 4 birdies on the back nine. The twist away is really working for me! And BTW, the longest of the 4 birdie putts was from 3’! That’s three tap in birdies and one near ace! It’s been about a month since I first saw this video and I am now very comfortable with the move.

This tip is everything. Not only does it get my club shaft in a great position at the top, but I feel like I can hold my arm angles with so much stability in transition. As I shift weight into my front foot I have no choice but to rotate my body to make contact. Great fix for so many of my early extension ailments resulting from ...you guessed it -- an open club face in transition. Thank you!

I tried this in front of mirror at home to groove it and buy into the position at the top.... and clubface through hitting area in slo-mo... then just used it at the course last weekend... without even going to the range hitting a single practice ball... gentle penetrating draw with more compression. Excellent instruction. This is exactly what I do, little bit on the back swing, but much more so on the downswing. My 8 iron went from 120 to 145 yards. This is a probably the 2nd biggest hurdle for most amateurs. The first being early pelvis extension and lack of hip rotation, which I'm still struggling with.

Excellent video! I'm a 3HCP and just got Mizuno MP-20 blades for Christmas. Although I was still scoring well and hitting them straight as an arrow (my normal flight is a baby draw), I could tell that my strike wasn't pure - and I wasn't turning it over. Went to the range today after watching this - first swing, absolutely pured and problem fixed. 5-8 more yards instantly and better trajectory, and back comes the push/draw. Certainly something I know, but over time the bad habits creep in and you forget. Thanks for reminding me - this video can help so many players. Great stuff and really enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work.

Great lesson. Push slices crept into my game and this fixed it. One important detail that hopefully you can confirm Eric. I found the best way to twist away on takeaway is to twist not straight back (towards camera) but twist lead knuckles at 45 degrees towards the right forearm angle. That’s a more true wrist flexion for me.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Жыл бұрын
Thank you! It's a bit grip dependent when we start talking about the anatomical wrist motions...flexion/extension and radial deviation/ulnar deviation. If you have a pretty neutral to strong grip (Vs pointing to your trail collarbone region), your 45° feel makes perfect sense!

Hi Eric , Thank you for this video , it’s made a massive difference to my game . Managed to get to 4 handicap but always lacked distance and compression and relied on timing . Twist away on the down swing ,awesome change for me , ball initially went further left than ever but really really solid ! So I persevered. I have practiced until I can now start the ball on line , shaft forward, body rotation as you suggest . Scratch handicap is now a real possibility 😀👍 Take care and best wishes Paul

Great video as always. I found some months ago, that if I keep my right palm facing the ground on the down swing my contact and ball flight greatly improves vs not doing that, I did try the twist coming down, but found after several tries that was sending the ball left big time, and my contact wasn't as good. So, I guess it comes down to what works for you. At any rate, all your videos have helped this 71 yr old to hit the ball further, more consistently, and as a result, I'm having more fun playing..

Really like this one! I've been working on external rotation of my trail arm since our lesson in October. There was also a recent vid that talked about a square checkpoint about a foot behind the ball. I saw that I was still open at this point but that adding some Twistaway at p3/p4 would square it. From there, rotation and more passive hands can get hands leading the Shaft and creating better dynamic loft! I never understood this as a way to square it!

Eric, Well done! You figured out what I call counterwound hands on my KZfaq channel, RockBurke, so that is exciting to see someone elso who knows it. I studied your swing at 08:36:04 with the DTL and Caddie view which was very nice. Would like to see you try my Hands Over The Top (HOTT) move as that will allow you to get the counterwound hands even more twisted...you are are actually twisting toward the target so maybe twist shut would be a more accurate term than your twist away or my counterwound hands. Named it counnterwound hands because everything in an effective golf swing is trying to twist the club open including the torque in the shaft so I am counterwinding my forearms with my hands to shut that clubface down and countering it...pronate torque with right hand and supinate torque with left hand on grip of club. For the HOTT move, would like you to keep your body closed for as long as possible while you move the hands up and also out toward the target line. You will try to get the left elbow as high as you can and the right elbow as low as you can while keep the upper body as closed as you can with left shoulder as low as you can and right shoulder as high as you can...you have a nice shoulder tilt so keep doing what you are doing, but with this understanding you will leverage it to get some HOTT in your golf swing. This will allow you to get even more of your twist away and my counterwound hands move (i.e. shutface). You are really jammed up right now as evidenced by your left heel coming off the ground through impact. Try to feel like you are going to really go as HOTT as you can and you will be amazed that your hands will round the corner sharper and you will get even more compression of the golf ball. Thanks, Rock

Merry Christmas Congorno Golf, This video by far is the best christmas present i could have ever opened and it has made my whole year brighter and I am again excited about golf and can't wait till next season. i do have one questione though with this method. I have been playing 2* flat on my irons for some time now but with this method i have noticed the toe getting a little deep through impact. I made an adjustment and bent my irons back upright 1-1/2* so now im am at 1/2* flat. Is this something i should have had to do by using this method? My divots are flat now and according to the lie board are pretty close. Ball striking is unbelievable. Just wondering if i did the right thing here? Thanks!
@CogornoGolf

Excellent! Happy to hear that! I don't think its 1-1....there are definitely some micro pieces in with this that could cause that but I wouldn't say (for instance) that every single golfer would need a more upright lie angle because of a twist away move.....too many other variables. But if you found a solution for you (that you can measure) thats all that matters!

Another great vid Eric. What I can’t get my head round is if ur twisting on the back swing and twisting again on downswing, how can you possibly not hook the ball?

Great tip. My coach gave me the swing thought of keeping the face pointing to the ground on the back swing. It works a amazingly, I'm hitting my 7 iron more solidly and 30 yards farther. My question is, I'm really struggling with my hybrid. I can't seem to duplicate the feel with hybrid. Do you have any tips? (Maybe this doesn't work with woods).

This is what I paid money for and it works incredibly well. I have in essence taken the right side of the golf course out of play. I must say that not being an instructor I do open the club face when I want to hit the ball higher this works well for me (maybe it’s pure luck). Look forward to your comments.

What I try to mimic is, the feeling of trying to get the club face horizontal with the ground? Of course I have somewhat of a wrist roll already, I progress the wrist roll more coming across the ball with my body getting out of the way during impact. Now that I have learned this move, my swing is slower with better contact an more consistent yardage. With a reduced loft an consistent sweet spot it’s all positive from here on!

Best Video you have put out. I started using this method about a week ago and i am absolutely puring my irons. I hardly miss the center of the face now and i hit it higher and farther with less effort than i ever have. It has the prettiest baby draw that i couldnt get before. Occasionally my old swing will creep in and ill pull one or release to hard and hit a slight hook but its tolerable. However, it is not working with my 3w or driver. i hit hard hooks or snaps using this method. Should i be doing something different for these two clubs to control that because they are unplayable as it is? Thanks!

Thanks! Appreciate the feedback and kind words. I would have to see a video of your swing and know more about whats going on to offer any specific advice for YOU. If you don't get it sorted check out cogornogolf.com so I can see your swing and help! You either need to adjust something else with those clubs to go along with it or not do it at all with those. I would prefer option A to keep things congruent.

My twisty wrist on the follow through was a habit I had to break and it wasn’t easy. I saw one of your follow through videos and decided to take a practice follow through, adjusted my grip, then lowered my club with the corrected grip and my pull hook was gone. I don’t know if this is the twist away method but thank you for the help.

Eric! Love this. Tried it out on the range today with impressive results. Did the iron grids and was perfect from SW all the way down until 6iron. Then I started to get some hooks and pushes. I know you've said before that bowing your wrist and closing the clubface delofts the club but I'm wondering for suggestions you have for players who want to control the clubface and be consistent with their long irons and woods just like their higher irons and wedges. I tried increasing speed and rotating harder with the long irons and woods and that helped sometimes but still saw low and hard hooks. Any suggestions? I just want to be consistent with the club face. Is the key maybe to do less of the twist away with the longer clubs but still do it a little bit? Thanks as always. Love cogornogolf and Dennis!

Great video, Eric. Your 'Twist Away' move is nothing 'new' in golf instruction. In 1970 Dick Altman wrote a great golf instruction book titled: 'The Square-To-Square Golf Swing'. In that book, a key feature of the Square to Square Method was what he called 'Curling Under' with the fingers of the left hand, at the start of the back swing. This move is almost exactly the same as your Twist Away method. Over the years I have heard prominent golf instructors disagree with Altman's 'curling under' because they claim it not good to 'close the club face' on the back swing. It seems that golf teaching has come full circle, back to Altman's method being viable....

Hi Eric, I find I really get super contact and compression on 8-56 degree if I bow back and pronate on the way through. Sounds weird but the feeling is that my hands going back go before the club head then I can really fire my legs (jump) and I don't even feel my arms through the hitting area and finish really high and balanced. Is there any difference/preference in doing the twist during backswing vs doing it on the downswing. When I do it during the back swing my club feels a bit off plane and and my wrist just feels a bit more stressed/uncomfortable. When I do it on the down swing things feel a bit better, but it feels like there is a bit more timing involved, and maybe a bit harder to dial in the correct amount of twist.

@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff! Experiment with feels to find neutral. Try just feeling the twist EARLY on (takeaway) first and always use video feedback to confirm. If you usually have a more active/twist release style, that could be causing the hooks now that your club face is potential more square to closed than normal. Look to pair the twist away with a nice passive release! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/itqCd8Rk2J2mp6M.html
