To have or not have that is the question.
Dishwashers save time, water, and energy. But do they? Jason will tell you the claims the dishwasher companies make are true and then some. But me, nah! I say those claims are based on the average American household and not these resource-conscious sailors.
And now we’re in the middle of building our new HH44 catamaran and the dishwasher debate is heating up again.
The problem is, we both make good arguments for and against the dishwasher. But it’s all based on hypotheticals. Because we’ve never actually had a dishwasher on an RV, Van, boat, or any tiny home. We don’t have any real-world experience to base our arguments on. Until now!
We’re living aboard our friend’s 47ft NEEL Trimaran as we sail it from Charleston to Miami. And they have a dishwasher that has finally given us the opportunity for a showdown. Sailor VS Dishwasher.
This isn’t a video we ever thought we would make and as for the results…well, we’re turning to you for help. Give it a watch and then pick your Wynn.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. Self-reliance and living a sustainable lifestyle are a must. It's all about managing our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. And over time we have learned a lot about renewable energy, creating safe drinking water, and managing our waste.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

Jason needs a dishwasher. It took 2 to 3 minutes to load. Then, he can move to other chores for the next 26 minutes. Dishes will be sanitized. If the sail is rough, instead of balancing and drying immediately, the dishwasher can be unloaded when not so rough.

I can definitely see the objection to a full dishwasher on a boat. They're big, they're heavy and if you're just two people you rarely need all that space. However, the small ones seem like a really good solution, not too much weight but enough space for everything you need and no hassle.

@@Tatiacha You are correct, yet oh so wrong! Cooking is far more rewarding than dishwashing. So yes cooking is more time intensive, but as was demonstrated in this video is that cleanup is a thankless under appreciated boring job. No one wants to do this type of job. The only time Trashman or septic pumper is appreciated is when they stop working. What is the least desired job in every restaurant? If the exchange happens Nikki (and likely Jason) will be unhappy with the quality of the meals. Nikki will then be even more unhappy with having to do dishes afterwards for a subpar meal. She then won't be able to vent the unhappiness because that would be admitting she has been wrong for 10 years. Eventually the graceful solution is to just say yes to the dishwasher. Then everyone has big smiles!

Yes! That's what I did. I installed 2 dishwashers on the boat and 3 dishwashers in my house. I only use 1 additional drawer for seldom-used dishes. It never made sense to me why people put the dishes in a dishwasher, unload them, and then put them in a dish drawer. WHY!!??!!? Your dishwasher IS the dish drawer... just leave them there until you need them. Then use it. You are generally using the SAME kind of dishes over and over again anyway. It works really well and eliminates the UNLOAD-to-LOAD-to-UNLOAD time-wasting, endlessly repeating scenario. Besides the time savings, I have a redundant dishwasher in case one of them fails while at sea... I always have at least one operational unit all of the time. ☺

Not a mariner / tiny house person currently (hope to be down the road), but I will say that as a single parent of a 3 year old my home dishwasher is one of the best appliances I can imagine. The quality and importance of my time and spending it with my son instead of washing dishes is unparalleled. IF you end up with enough space to justify one, and considering your lifestyle I'd recommend getting a dishwasher if it ends up fitting into the space limitations of your new boat. Plus, loading and unloading the dang thing, is also a chore 😃 Seriously though, 100% pro dish washer. There are too many variables here. The number of dishes you store plus the number you have to wash per meal. Plus, if the eco setting takes 2+ hours as you say, than you may not need the storage, senile dishes get ''stored'' and washed between meals.

Jason gets my vote, particularly as it only takes 3 minutes to load the dishwasher and then you walk away. In my country, kitchens typically have 2 dishwashers and they don't bother emptying the clean dishes until they use them, where they stack them in the empty washer, so you don't even have to put them away.

It certainly comes down to two things for me. 1) What is your time worth? For me, spending an hour each day washing dishes is a large amount of time, vs 5 minutes loading / unloading (or taking straight from the clean wash cycle to use in cooking) per cycle. new one of these seems to go for $1400 dollars. Even if you paid Jason or Nikki a minimal wage of $15 for the hour of washing dishes each day - that dishwasher would be paid for in less than 100 days of washing dishes. Your time is worth more than that. I equate this to something Nikki does. She doesn't stand in front of the oven when you're baking something for an hour. Nikki is free to do other tasks or relax. This would provide Jason the same ability. 2nd - You're going to be in an energy efficient boat with lots of battery and solar. That to me is moot point when considering energy. Unless you're in the direst straights energy wise run the dishwasher during the morning and afternoon and you won't touch any battery since you're generating at least 3-4 kWh continuously during the day even with cloudy skies. I'm with Jason on this one. If there is room, it can allow for more productivity with minimal trade off.

I will go with Jason on this one. It is a practical item, as well as a nice luxury that you deserve. To address your concern about storage space: You don't actually lose any and you might find that you gain some space for things like cutlery! After the dishes are cleaned in the dishwasher just leave them in the racks until you need to use them again during the day. The dishwasher racks will also protect your dishes in rough conditions as the plates and glasses are held away from each other by the rack. A microwave or oven can also be used for storage of those things that need to be put away during sailings.

This was a big decision for us too. Our first cat had one, which was great. Our second cat did not, not so great! Our third cat did not have one, we tried it again but sacrificed the ice-maker for a dishwasher and our latest cat… we ll it was the first thing we installed. For all the reasons Jason says, it changes your life for the better. Nikki - sorry but you did not dry the dishes, the counter looked a mess when you had finished and you were busy the whole time at the sink while Jason had his feet up while the dishwasher does the work. My advice, get the dishwasher put in in the factory before you take delivery. It will fit better and you will be so glad you did. Let’s face it, we fill every cupboard on a boat, so you will never find the space for it after you have moved on board, but you will not miss the cabinet if the dishwasher is already there. So, there you have it, my very strong opinion 😅

Pro-dishwasher! We've installed them on our last two boats (18" wide, full-sized not the drawer). They make life SOOOO much easier and keep the counters free of clutter. The space you assign to the dishwasher is more than made up for by getting rid of the drying rack and freeing up all that counter space. You also get to put all the dirty dishes in the machine instead of having them hanging out in the sink. We usually run ours every 1-2 days. Get it installed by the HH factory. That way it'll be done really nicely and wired correctly. Since you're getting a performance cruiser, you're going to be too busy sailing to be washing dishes. :-) AND you don't want Jason's delicate hands to get hurt, he needs them to help trim the sails. :-)

As the inventor of the dishwasher, I am Team Jason. Life is too short to spend time on menial tasks like dishwashing. With the time Jason saves dishwashing, he can help Nikki cook (or take turns) or do something more value-added to your shared life. The best feature of a dishwasher is it gives you an approved place to put all the dirty dishes! Don't have to look at them and they are out of the way. When it's done with the wash cycle, then you can choose when to put them away, so it is a time shifter of sorts. And if I were you, I’d get it built-in during the build process. You will figure out the best use of space remaining in the galley once you are living aboard. 😊

I live in Japan and my apartment is quite large compared to most Japanese living spaces. Within my space I have a drawer sized dishwasher. I think it is energy efficient, but I don't always use it. I like it for those days when I have people over. I don't use it every single day, though. My husband and I own just enough dishes to get by, but if I had to cook as often as you two I would find it indispensable.

You should definitely get the dishwasher. The key is to run the dishwasher overnight. You should use the dishes for 2 meals and 1 meal should be a quick serve and not need any dishes. Rinse your coffee and drinking glasses quickly and only sanitize every 3rd or 4th day. You should just basically use it as storage. It’s a time saver and a complete no brainer. You guys are great, love watching you guys ❤!

I live on a homestead where water and power is a challenge. When I send my husband out to fix something/or do a chore I do not tell him what tools he can use. Nikki, if Jason wants a dishwasher, let him have a dishwasher. My husband has too many points on this, all of them say your test is scientifically invalid. Over a large sample size under realistic conditions it’s easy to see the slim margins of victory you achieved would be washed out by the consistency and effectiveness of the washing machine. We super enjoy watching you guys, thanks for the entertainment!

The dishwasher in my house broke about 6 years ago, and I just haven't gotten around to replacing it yet. I'm going to do it with a revamp of the whole kitchen, and I've been putting that off. In the mean time, I hand wash my dishes and find it takes very little time. I use a wash cloth, instead of a sponge, which is washed with the laundry. You also need to take advantage of the power of soaking (for those dried eggs and the pan). If I were installing a luxury item on a boat, I would go with a washing machine (for clothes) before I would get a dishwasher.

I'm most definitely Team Jason! We didn't have one during the first year or so we lived in a Jersey City apartment, and it was a pain...even if it's to wash dishes for just two people! The manual dish washer we now have in our household agrees that time spent actively doing something is very different from the passive time while something else does the task for you. The amount of active time the dishes take would be even greater if you count the time Jason is actively drying them, vs the passive time they are safely drying in the dishwasher. Remember, time is valuable, use it wisely. In your case, it's better spent on other boat jobs that machines cannot do.

Totally in Jason’s corner. I’m rebuilding my galley at the moment and yes, there is a dishwasher in there. The boat is a 47’ with the galley amidship. It does take space, I give Nikki that for sure, but I think comfort is more important than having a plethora of stuff that you inevitably will fill the space with. The storage in my galley will be contested, but I still go for the dishwasher. What I hear though is that Jason is tired of doing the dishes. So, if he wants to have a dishwasher let him have a dishwasher. Then you can do the food together instead! Much nicer than having one slaving in the galley before the meals and one after the meals. You get more time together, isn’t that something to consider too? Totally worth it. Jason, you should have one installed on the HH44 (not envious at all, nope!) from the get go. Don’t do the mistake of deciding later because then it will be another 10 years of the same argument and you will still do the dishes as it isn’t a big deal for Nikki if you do them. Stay confident, Jason! It will transform your lives in the galley for sure.

When Jason gets his dishwasher I'd suggest not mounting at floor level. That little dial that sticks out is just waiting to get sheared off by somebody's toes. There may be a reason why it had to be at the bottom of the stack but I would have sacrificed a couple inches of drawer storage by setting the dishwasher on a 2" lift and shaving the same amount off the drawer face (obvs relocating the slides up 2" also).

Doing the dishes once for efficiency on a KZfaq video is one thing, but do it 3 times a day for a year is…draining (pun intended) 365 days x 3 times a day = 1068 times doing dishes a year. 15 mins each wash = 267 hours. 267 hours = 11 days. Plus the emotional bonus of not needing to do dishes is priceless

A dishwasher gives you a choice. If you want to wash two dishes by hand, do it. If you get lazy because you had a long tiring voyage, and the dishes pile up, washer. Yes, you lose space, but you can also "store" dirty or washed dishes (either/or) in the dishwasher, too, for a short period. Great video! You both really turned an "example of each" into an actually debated competition, lol. Get ALL the drops! 🤣 Love you both! ❤ You both are so lucky to have found each other.

As someone whose husband does most of the dishes, I'm with Jason. We went years without a dishwasher while we were living in tiny rentals. I did most of the cooking and my husband usually took on the dishes at night. He despises that chore but sacrificed to help me. He's much happier with a dishwasher now, and it was totally worth it if it eased his burdens (and mine as I took on more dishes during the day as we grew our family) and his work load.

Having a dishwasher is a good option to fit if there is available space. The convenience, sanitation, and time-saving factors are enough to convince me plus if you have the power (solar) why not? There are little things in life that make big differences, and not having to worry (as much) about cleaning up after a nice meal is sorta a big deal. In the Army, over 25 years and deployments to many areas that were shall we say less than ideal, the dishes from feeding masses of troops would amount to high mountains if added together. Such a machine would have made life sooooo much easier haha! Also, you two are building a life of dreams, and dreams do not often include washing dishes! Practicality may deem adding in a dishwasher as being a no-go, but on the other hand, the same could be said about living on a cool boat and traveling the world. Sometimes it is not about practicality as much as self-actualization and if those darn dirty dishes having to get washed by hand are getting in the way of achieving that level in life, by golly, go for that dishwasher! Best of luck with this momentous decision! As a dishwasher myself (by hand, I am not a machine!), I can say that I have steeled myself to the task on a regular basis and have even used it to spend time daydreaming (of anything but doing those damn dishes!)...There are more pressing things in life, sure, but this is an annoyance that keeps on giving, so...Up to you two! TC and looking forward to the new ride reveal (when is the date you will get the first crack with sea trials, etc.?)... 🙏🙏🙏 👍😎👍

It's cheaper to install a dish washer now while building a boat rather than installing one later. And it saves time in the long run. Usually the dish machine is loaded as everyone is finishing their meal. On our Carver 466 M/V we don't have a dish washer (but wish we did) and trying to get a water supply line and waste line will be some work. A vote for D/M Jason

We had that exact same debate. We live full time in a 34’ motorhome… this was our biggest question when having it built. None of our previous motorhomes had a dishwasher. After much debate… with all of the same points y’all raised…. We decided to order the dishwasher. We could always use it for storage. Long story short… we LOVE our dishwasher. We use it all the time (we’ve even used it while dry camping). It’s so nice just to be able to load the dishes and go on to something else. We have a Fisher & Paykel drawer style. It’s super efficient with both power and energy, quiet and does a great job. Highly recommend. 👍 Plus, it can be a lot more expensive and a royal pain to have the dishwasher installed after production… easier and cheaper during the build. (We considered both and decided to include it in the build of our Newmar New Aire 2 years ago. So glad we did!)

Have your new boat plumbed and the electrical installed for a dishwasher, then if you decide to get one it won't be so hard to install it. Remember you can store your dishes in the dishwasher so it can be considered a storage drawer between uses. We have a dishwasher in our home and hardly ever use it, but I would still want one for the times I don't want to wash the dishes by hand. We use it for storing dishes etc.

Quicker take from my longer post (Team Both): Nikki, the time Jason saves on the front end, I suspect you're going to gain half of, or more, on the back end. Y'all work as a team, the number of hours in a day aren't changing, nor the demands for your time. So the 10-11 minute gain / respite per wash is that much faster he can get on to getting something else accomplished that you or he would have had to do anyway, but might have otherwise been pushed back and possibly delayed a welcome joint adventure or rest. So helping him save time, helps you save time and vice versa...

Seriously, GET A DISHWASHER. I was a big naysayer since forever. But now that I've got a cute little apartment-sized one, it's AMAZING. I freaking love this little thing. I didn't realize how much I actually hated washing dishes until I bought a place with this thing. And, if it's a small, efficient one, it's amazing on water and energy. With a roommate, I feel so much better about whether the dishes actually ARE clean or not. (He's kind of a slob.) Also, put in the plumbing for one whether or not you actually install one. That way, you don't have the excuse of having to do all the plumbing and wiring to stop you from getting one in the future.
