Those low notes by Tori sound so free! I was *shook*... those C3s were so well-projected that I cannot even believe she's a soprano. I thought it was the other girl singing at first because Tori's voice is much lighter than what I'm hearing from this clip. But, as it turns out, because of Tori's technique, she is able to manipulate her voice to sound heavy and light as and when she pleases 🤍

IMHO when it comes to the LM girlies I'd argue how only Perrie is the great vocalist, whilst the other two girls are "good". And although Jade, and arguably Leigh Anne, might be more versatile in the things they do with their voices, Perrie's forte is simply leagues above. I would also like to see a video about "boring" singers. Singers who comfortably sit in their smaller ranges, people who don't show off with complex ornaments - the nuance of good singing, storytelling and musicality. Even though everyone is impressed by a Dimash, So Hyang or Chante - as they should be, there is little love for "modesty" in singing.

I can't even count the number of times I've seen people use the term "GOAT" in reference to singers, vocalists, athletes, actors etc. It really devalues the title: "Greatest of All Time". *Chante Moore deserves much more recognition!* ✨ She delivered extraordinary vocals, stage presence and poise in that medley without breaking a sweat. We barely have great vocal performances at major awards shows anymore, let alone extraordinary vocals like Chante delivered at the BET Soul Train Awards.

@@Singing_Will To be honest, that's a challenging one but I'd say some kind of Soprano. I recall that Black Music Archive (I Love Aretha Franklin) classified her as a hybrid/intermediary voice type (Dugazon Soprano) because her voice sits relatively low in comparison to many other Sopranos but it's also not as weighty as Mezzo-Sopranos and rather quite light (she does powerful things with her voice though).

You nailed it at the end. It’s about how a singer makes you feel. It’s less about the technical expertise, but it’s the emotion that it conveys. And it’s mostly about the tone (assuming that the singer is otherwise OK/good technically).That’s why even though Miley is not technically “great”, her unique tone makes her stand out and moves people, more than Jojo does (and I love Jojo). Same with Christina Aguilera. Their technically flawed and strained E5s usually move people more than other great singers’ perfect G5s. Because, you can’t fake the unique tone, you either have it or not.

It's true, but what you explained is also another part of what makes one a great vocalist: the ability to interpret the lyrics with the exact tone and emotion required for that specific song or genre of music. Most great vocalists possess that skill. It's either you have soul or you don't.

You made a great point about musicality and being able to make the right choices with your toolset to express what you want or enhance the song... Personally, I think one of the things that I would consider makes someone "a great vocalist"/vocal technique wise, is CONTROL and, by extension, sustainability. A great vocal technique allows your voice to develop/mature through time instead of you losing your voice. A great technique means you have enough control to do exactly what you want at will, when you want, without being overly inconsistent in different performances, or unreliable when you sing live or go on tour. A great vocalist also can, if their voice ages or even deteriors in some way over time, for whatever circumstantial reason... They can adapt or navigate the situation, adjust their voice or re-arrange the song in order to still deliver a beautiful performance... A great vocalist knows their own instrument better than anyone else, better than they know the palm of their own hand.

Another criteria I have is can they sing well live and do so consistently. Everyone has a bad day and no I don't expect perfection all the time, they are human shit happens. However if you don't sound at all like how you do on your CD or only do like 50% of the time then something is wrong and makes me wonder how much technology is behind their talent.

I feel like a good vocalist and a great vocalist know their strengths and how to utilize them, however, I think a great vocalist knows how to better navigate around their “weaknesses” per say and can adapt to many styles and I think that is what makes them great. Everyone learns to sing healthily at some point if there is great vocal demand and performances, that’s what can make or break how sustainable one’s voice can be.

Wow this is an amazing 🤩 video ‼️ Nothing but straight 💯 A great vocalist for me is someone who can adapt to any musical venue/genre , showcase a wide array of skills in their vocal palate, possesses freedom in their voice in at least 2 octaves or more, and showcase adequate development in each register - but I do tend to lean slightly towards someone who shows development in their upper register as it’s sooooo rare to see in POP 👌🏽‼️ Excellent video - it’s the small things that separates GOOD from GREAT but it’s noticeable and the examples you gave were SPOT ON ✨ Love ❤️ your videos - excellent job Mon Ami 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Is development in the upper register more rare than development in the lower register in Pop music?
@JoCurKRAZE
@JoCurKRAZE Жыл бұрын
@@GarageStudio7 I would say so, more people would work on their lows now since it’s kind of been pushed to the forefront since TLC, Toni Braxton, Jazmine Sullivan, Brandy, Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus etc. but more people would develop their falsetto & whistle but not really seek to produce proper head voice 🤷🏽‍♂️ They rather sound pretty than pristine - range/quantity over quality/substance
@GarageStudio7
@GarageStudio7 Жыл бұрын
@@JoCurKRAZE I think it's because most don't even really know the difference between head voice and falsetto. They try to develop the notes in that area but they consider them to be the same. I've even seen people in the vocal community claiming that they are the same and even make compilations of singers using falsetto but calling it all "head voice". I still think lows tend to be more overlooked and even vocalists with great lows know this. Eg. In Tori Kelly's debut performance of her new single "Missing You", she prioritized her highs so mainly warmed up for the higher notes more and dodged many of the lows because as a smart vocalist she knows the highs would catch the masses' attention more. When it comes to whistle notes, Minnie is credited as being the main one to introduced it to popular music. Mariah popularized it the most and Ariana emphasized it for the newer generarion. Honorable mention to Morisette popularizing it as well for the new generation. Because of this, I've seen people accessing the register more but most just throw them out there without much musicality and most aren't doing the incredibly complex things that the legends and unsung virtuosas did eg. Minnie, Mariah, Chante, Betty Wright etc.
@JoCurKRAZE
@JoCurKRAZE Жыл бұрын
@@GarageStudio7 I agree ☝🏽 with this, I think both are the most overlooked registers as one register (head voice) many don’t know truly what it is/ the difference between that and falsetto & the other (lows) many don’t see it as a necessity & it’s not mainstream/ attention grabbing … when I say upper register I mean actual head voice - the term has almost been destroyed by the KZfaq “Vocal Community” and limited knowledge of most MAINSTREAM SINGERS …. I feel that most singers want the quantity of MARIAH CAREY’s voice (range) as it’s attractive (although she is a fantastic vocalist) but rather overlook the ESSENTIALS of DEVELOPING SKILLS ….. 🤷🏽‍♂️ It’s crazy honestly, but I feel like bc MANY don’t know, they Will try to go for lows although w/ questionable technique but want the airy falsetto - Leona Lewis is someone who can interchange between both falsetto/head voice …. Providing style with skills adequately … I understand your quip - so true, adequate head voice is somewhat rare nowadays along with adequate low

People rely too much on high notes and vocal runs to prove someone is a well rounded singer. Some people end up using it as a crutch when they lack the ability to make a song technically more interesting. Considering how many singers there are in comparison with how many people there are in the world, I don't think we're generalizing if we're putting 100 or even 1000 singers as great singers.

The jade and Tori comparison was a bit odd but I I feel like we've seen more from Leigh Anne and perrie vocally specifically in ballads as those 2 always shine the most with there powerhouse abilities but sometimes I feel like jade holds herself back because she's not comfortable. She's the only one from little mix including Jesy that I've never heard a solo cover from so I'm very excited to see her shine in her element. She doesn't need to be a powerhouse to be great I love her falsetto and lows it's one of the best of this generation imo.
@danjuliano
@danjuliano Жыл бұрын
not to be biased, but I don't think so it is an odd, i could say Jade isn't great as Tori in many areas, but except the ease of upper belts, am not doubt that Jade takes it, in terms of vocal agility, resonance, lows, & falsettos go to Tori, & if you notice, the exact or stability for Jade for hitting some specific notes sometimes sound good but kinda out of tunes, not saying she isn't a vocalist, but yup her ability isn't near to Tori
@littlemixwillsurvivelittle976
@littlemixwillsurvivelittle976 Жыл бұрын
@@danjuliano no where did I say jade was a better vocalist relax lol. It is an odd comparison because they sing differently. Tori gets deep into the riffs and runs, she also is a high belter which jade does none of these on the regular. Jade is more of a falsetto and lows gal. My point was jade hasn't been heard by herself yet and I'm intrigued to see her in her element by herself too hear what we didn't hear in the group.

Well as someone who actually trains every kind of technique. In order to make music just using my mouth. I can say, what is a good technique is questionable. To the beginners out there. Instead of learning every technique that's out there, focus on two or three techniques. And make them perfect. If you trained the technique and it sounds good. There is a good chance you misplaced it. Singing Mongolian "my heart will go on." Or tuvan billie jean. Might be a good party trick. Take pavaroti, louis Armstron, michael Jackson and James brown. They all are refered as the greatist singers of all kinds. And due to the fact that they all used different aproaches I am not a fan of asking if someone is technicaly good. One of my favorite artists is Björk. Not because she has great vocal controll (which she has.) But because of her childlike way she sees things. Also if you may listen to me. You might be impressed. But on this point you may not listen to it again and again. If I compose music (which I do just for fun.) Most of the time it's getting better by deleting instruments. Not by adding more and more Instruments. And well I know as soon as you can do a technique you actually want to use it everywhere. But don't do this I falled for this my self.

@@littlemixwillsurvivelittle976 I don't think she is better than Tori or Faouzia! These two are crazy good and Faouzia is of middle eastern musical background so the Arabic influence in her singing makes her the most unique of them cuz she is using both techniques...

@someonenew5198 Жыл бұрын
@@varunravi27 I beg to differ since riffing and running I'd say they are equal or pretty damn close... The riffs that Faouzia and Tori do are far more creative than the repetitive patterns that Beyonce does... Also I never heard her do the Arabic trills that Faozuia does for example. She could have a slight better head voice but she isn't that far ahead and don't forget that both Faozuai and Tori are way younger than her which means she had much more time to master her voice. Also Faouzia never had vocal training! So technique wise she isn't that far ahead she can actually be considered close to equal...
