Flying in a modern AirAsia jet is like magic and time travel. I woke up in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and after four hours in a metal box, I arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in what felt like a different century.
It's physical and mental whiplash to change countries so fast and so dramatically. Not only that, but you change climate zones, too, as KL is a good 2,000 kilometers south of Dhaka. And the heat and humidity rises to remind you of that.
I was sad to leave Bangladesh. I felt like I was just getting into the rhythm of life there when my visa expired and I had to leave. I spent most of my time in Old Dhaka, and the frantic pace of Old Dhaka, as much as I enjoyed it, did tire me out a bit.
And my flight - as most of the low-budget flights do - left from Dhaka after midnight. So I was exhausted before my jet even got off the ground. By the time it landed in Malaysia, I was a babbling wreck and very glad to finally arrive at my hostel in Kuala Lumpur.
I wanted to stay in Bangladesh longer, but I didn't see any option for renewing my visa or even doing a visa run. Perhaps, after a trip to Myanmar, I will return to Bangladesh as I begin a long journey to Europe and Africa. Stay tuned to this channel for all of that.

It certainly captures the current construction craze in Kuala Lumpur. There are so many new buildings going up. I think someone in the comments told me that was the elevated section of the MRT 2 railway project. And I agree, the people are definitely nice. 👍

I’m a flight attendant. We always hv mosquitoes problem whenever we fly to Dhaka. All the crew get mosquito bites n then those blood suckers get onboard without tickets!

That's fascinating. 😄 I wonder how they get in so fast. It's not like the plane door is open to the outside air. It's sealed with that passenger bridge (or whatever it is called). I can understand one or two mosquitoes getting inside. But I was really surprised at how many there were. For the first half of the flight, all you could hear were people slapping their hands together as they tried to kill them. Eventually, I guess, we killed them all (or they got enough blood and weren't hungry anymore) because they disappeared after a while. And what nerve! Getting on the plane without tickets! 😂

I have seen several rickshaws in a few cities in Malaysia:- 1. Kuala Terengganu. 2. Melaka. 3. Teluk Intan.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
I remember kind of seeing rickshaws in Georgetown, Penang, as well. But they are just for us tourists to ride around in on holiday. 🚲🚲 Dhaka, of course, is in an entirely different category. Bicycle rickshaws are still a major form of transportation for the local people. I loved that. I've never seen anything like it before. 👍 I was in the Philippines recently, and you still see quite a few bicycle rickshaws there being used as regular transportation. I remember seeing a lot of them on Biliran and Catanduanes. But they are a different style with the passenger compartment as a sidecar to a bicycle. They are slowly being replaced by motorcycle tricycles. So it's really quite something to see a place like Dhaka with so many bicycle rickshaws in active use. I don't know if anyone even knows the number, but there are easily hundreds of thousands of them. Millions, maybe?

I really enjoyed this video series in Bangladesh, it's a place I've thought about, as it's much shorter than the 3777 km to KL. I've been reading your blog for a few years now, and when discussing styles of travel always bring you up, at it's impressive that you can spend such long amounts of time I places that I'd have trouble spending a three day weekend in. Before the age of cameras built into phones, I'd get in my car and start driving the 50 miles to LAX, and then wonder if I shut my garage door, or did in fact bring my passport. Several times I drove home to confirm I shut it, and would pull over to dig out my passport. It's better than getting to LAX and not having a passport. Once again, thank you for posting these.

You're very welcome. I really appreciate all the comments you left. It encouraged me to make more videos. It's always been a habit of mine to stay in places a long time. I try to make it sound like a positive thing - like I do it on purpose. But, to be honest, it's probably due to a bit of laziness and procrastination. 😂 Basically, I enjoy being in new places, but the actual travel part to get there is stressful. So when I find a place I like, I often end up just staying a long time. One of my first big bicycle trips was to Africa. My plan really was to ride my bicycle through lots of different countries. But in the end, I visited only ONE! I went only to Ethiopia. It was a fascinating country, and I could even have spent much longer there than I did. I went hiking in the mountains one time, and I came across an interesting small town with a cheap hotel, and I ended up staying in just that one village for nearly a month. I missed out on a lot of other places because of that, but I really enjoyed it. I did the same thing in Guatemala and in Ecuador. And when I think about going to six or seven countries in a row, I think about all those border crossings (which are so stressful), getting new visas all the time, changing money all the time, spending endless hours in buses and trains and airports. I'd much rather stay where I am and explore that place some more. And it makes a lot of sense. In all honesty, there is so much to experience just in Dhaka, I could have spent another couple of months there. Why rush to a new city in Bangladesh when I haven't even seen all of Dhaka yet? And then I discovered that I could just hop on a boat at the river, go somewhere on a day trip, and then come back to my hotel in Dhaka. That was great. I didn't have to bring all my luggage or worry about where I was going to spend the night. It also helps that I am entertained by very small things. I don't need huge tourist attractions. For me, just riding in a CNG in Dhaka was a big adventure. That's the kind of stuff I like. The people in Bangladesh encouraged me to go to the Sundarbans and to Cox's Bazar and the other tourist attractions, and I'm sure I would enjoy those places, but just the experience of taking a small boat across the Buriganga River was enough for me. As for your story about needing to check you have your passport, etc., I can relate to that. That kind of worry and stress is part of the reason I stay in one place once I get there. Flying to Bangladesh, getting the visa, getting from the airport into the city, finding a reasonably-priced place to stay, figuring out how to get a SIM card and activate it, finding out how to order food and finding a restaurant you like - that's all the hard part and it just about kills me. I'm exhausted at the end. So once all that is done, I don't want to suddenly move to a new place and start all over again. 😃 I've done all the hard and stressful work, so I want to settle in and enjoy where I am. Not to babble on forever, but this idea actually goes back decades to when I read a lot of travel books. My favorite travel books were always the ones where people spent a long time in one place. Those books really inspired me. A good example is Peter Mayne's "A Year in Marrakesh." I always saw myself living that kind of life. And when it came to actual travel books where people traveled long distances, I enjoyed the ones where people went slowly and stayed for a long time. I'm thinking of "Slow Boats to China" by Gavin Young and "In Ethiopia with a Mule" by Dervla Murphy. It was books like that (and my aversion to buses) that made me start using a bicycle to travel when I had the chance. And I've always kept my eye open for countries that offered long-term visas. On my second trip to Africa, I ended up in Guinea largely because I could get a 6-month tourist visa for that country. That made life a lot easier. 👍 Thanks again for all your comments. I really enjoyed making the videos in Bangladesh, and if things work out, I'm going to try to keep making them for other places I visit.

I just got done watching all the vlogs and I must say I have really enjoyed all of them. The best part was the 37 Windows in the Al razzak hotel. Ha Ha Ha. This hotel is walking distance from my grand parents house and I had no idea how the rooms looks like. You are a brave soul they way ventured into the entire Dhaka by yourself. Was hoping to see some videos from the new Dhaka (Gulshan, Baridhara, Banani) which is quite different from the old Dhaka. You did not talk much about your food experience, it must have quite challenging. Overall I hope you had a pleasant experience in my homeland which I miss everyday. Thank you. I enjoyed my stay in Bangladesh very much. I keep thinking about everything that I saw there and everything that happened. Yeah, mosquitoes are funny things. I expect to see them outside, and if I go into the woods, I put on mosquito repellent to keep them from biting me. So it is always a surprise when I go into a building or something like an airplane and find out that it is filled with mosquitoes. And mosquitoes are attracted to me for some reason. People around me will be fine. No mosquitoes bite them, because all the mosquitoes come to me. As the woman said, I guess I have tasty blood. 😄 You take care, too.

Hi nice vids ! Fun fact when the Kuala Lumpur Railway station was built , construction was delayed as its rooftop design did not meet British railway specifications. It had to be able to support snow a metre deep, pretty funny when you factor in KL’s year-round hot and humid weather.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
That IS funny. It makes me think of Canada and all the building codes there. The houses have to be able to withstand hot summers as well as freezing-cold winters with temperatures way below zero. And, of course, we can't really have flat roofs on houses because of the snow. Roofs have to be angled so the snow falls off. And any flat roof on a commercial building has to be strong enough to support, as you said, a metre or more of snow. Applying those building codes to Malaysia would be pretty silly. You'd have to wait a LONG time to see any snow or temperatures below zero here. 😂 My current hostel room in Kuala Lumpur doesn't have air conditioning, and I'm having a lot of trouble sleeping in this heat. I thought I was accustomed to the heat of southeast Asia, but I guess not... The heat and humidity here is giving me a tough time right now. 😩

No, I didn't know about Exchange 106. I just looked at some pictures of it on Google Maps. That's an imposing building. Simple and clean lines all the way from the bottom to the top. That's a true skyscraper. The Internet tells me it is going to open in September and it will be the tallest building in Southeast Asia at 452 m (1,483 ft). Actually, I've always been fascinated by the construction stories of these large buildings. I used to watch a lot of the documentaries about how they are built, and the scale of it blows my mind. I did a tiny bit of construction work back in Canada during my university days. All I worked on were wood frame houses, and those were so complicated I couldn't really grasp it. Luckily, my job was just to carry wood and hammer nails. I didn't have to read the plans and schedule the construction process. I can't even imagine what goes into building something like the Exchange 106.

Just Lost My Almost 6hours (include bathroom break, snack break like 5-6 time & a dinner break) to watch all of the videos of Bangladesh series. That was quite impossible for me to do that. but it's really happened for lockdown (coronavirus). since we have to be in the home. Thank you for coming to our country. Just One Question I have on my mind, you have been there for like 2 months & Only Visit Half-Mile around of ur hotel room (some old building) & just a few gov offices & some museum and cites called Chadpur not even the city just roaming around the riverside. do you think that's all in Bangladesh? No, You're wrong. You Can Visit Chittagong or Sythel Or Khulna Or Maybe in Cox's Bazar Or Maybe A Boat Trip to Sundhorban (Since ur Very close to Riverport) Or Roam Around in The Top of Mountain to feel the cloud (Bandarban/khagrachariz) or just take bath in a waterfall or Some interesting Site in Sajek Valley or Just take a boat from cox's Bazar to St. Martin Island Or Just Taste some seafood in there. Upps One thing I forgot! suddenly came up to my mind, Dhaka is a city of the mosque with nearly 1000 mosques in the city. All of the mosques have a bathroom facility (Everyone can use them) so you don't have to be panic for finding a public toilet. I think, if you ask local people then traveling is a lot easier. most of the time you are walking in the street you can ask random people in the street to help you to get a rickshaw (bargain price matter), they will surely do that. Bangladeshi People are so kind. You Never Find So Welcoming People any other places in the World. When you go out in the street everyone looks at you like a celebrity asking you where u from? Or Just a request to take a selfie. I can proudly say that our people give so much hospitality to a foreigner that you never got other countries. Meet a guy name Kaye & he just invites you to have a lunch in his home, how many countries people dose that? literally, I guess no one. Once Again Thank you very much for coming to our country. I hope you listed our country in ur upcoming visit list.

Two reasons, I guess. One is that I'm never in a hurry. The train is faster, but I don't mind sitting on the bus for an hour. So if I take the bus, I have 43 extra ringgit to spend on a good lunch and dinner or whatever I want. 👍 Actually, I did take the train to the airport when I went to Bangladesh. Dear Sir...A warm welcome wish to you back in Malaysia... And though you may not have planned for it, by coincidence, if you're in Malaysia for the next 1 week plus, you're going to witness & experience 3 very important public holidays... 1) Federal Territory Day (1st February 2019) an annual public holiday celebrated by Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya & Labuan Territories; 2) Chinese New Year (5th & 6th February 2019) an annual public holiday celebrated by the whole of Malaysia and 3) Proclamation & Investiture Ceremony of the 16th King of Malaysia Day (31st January 2019) a celebration that happens every 5 Years (it's supposed to be in December 2021) but was brought forward to January 2019 because the 15th King of Malaysia abdicated his throne in early January 2019... If I come to Malacca, I'll get in touch. I'm making plans to go to Myanmar for a month, but I don't know if I will cycle around Malaysia before that or after. Hi again The Cycling Canadian... thank you kindly for your kind reply. Indeed what you say is true about skyrocketing flight ticket prices during Chinese New Year festivities but it's an annual scenario we Malaysians have gotten used to. In fact such skyrocketing travel costs always occurs during holiday seasons that coincides with various festivities similar Chinese New Year throughout the calendar year... I guess that's just simple economics of Supply vs Demand 🤗 Nevertheless, I pray that whatever your travel plans, it works out fine eventually and will inevitably bring you & us (via your VLOGs) valuable travel coverage & reports as how a typical traveller would experience... @@PlanetDoug honking in Malaysia considered rude. Horn applied when needed here.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
@@blueberrypeanut54 Absolutely. It's the same in Canada. It's rare to honk the horn. At a stoplight if a driver ahead of you isn't paying attention and doesn't know the light turned green, you might give a little "toot" on the horn, politely, just to wake them up. And you might also "toot" the horn when you see a friend to say hello or to say goodbye when you drive away from someone's house. The only times you would really blast the horn is in an emergency. If you honk the horn loudly for no reason, people will get angry with you. But in Dhaka, the horn is like a musical instrument. 😃 They play it non-stop while they drive. I tried to relax and just let it flow over me, because I knew there was nothing I could do to change it. It's just the way things are in Bangladesh right now. I'm sure the horn-honking will slowly disappear as the city develops a subway system and the traffic gets more organized. But right now, if you go to Dhaka as a visitor, you have to be prepared for a LOT of horn honking. If I had to complain about one part of it, it would be the new, modern motorcycles. They had LOUD horns, and the drivers blasted them constantly and for absolutely no reason. It gave me a heart attack sometimes. I often wanted to talk to the drivers of these motorcycles and ask them exactly why they blasted the horn just now. They'd be in a traffic jam, and no one can move, and the horn has no effect. So why keep honking it over and over and over again? It wasn't logical. 😂 But as I said, there's nothing you can do about it. There's no point in getting upset. So I just smiled and kept walking and let the horn honking wash over me. 👍
