Flying in a modern AirAsia jet is like magic and time travel. I woke up in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and after four hours in a metal box, I arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in what felt like a different century.
It's physical and mental whiplash to change countries so fast and so dramatically. Not only that, but you change climate zones, too, as KL is a good 2,000 kilometers south of Dhaka. And the heat and humidity rises to remind you of that.
I was sad to leave Bangladesh. I felt like I was just getting into the rhythm of life there when my visa expired and I had to leave. I spent most of my time in Old Dhaka, and the frantic pace of Old Dhaka, as much as I enjoyed it, did tire me out a bit.
And my flight - as most of the low-budget flights do - left from Dhaka after midnight. So I was exhausted before my jet even got off the ground. By the time it landed in Malaysia, I was a babbling wreck and very glad to finally arrive at my hostel in Kuala Lumpur.
I wanted to stay in Bangladesh longer, but I didn't see any option for renewing my visa or even doing a visa run. Perhaps, after a trip to Myanmar, I will return to Bangladesh as I begin a long journey to Europe and Africa. Stay tuned to this channel for all of that.
