The KTM Komuter was the last part of the transportation system in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia that I hadn't explored with my camera. But the time had come, and I took the KTM Komuter train on a shopping expedition to look for the Panasonic G85 mirrorless micro four thirds camera. Along the way, I set myself a 5-snack challenge. The idea is that I had to stop and sample whatever food or drinks caught my eye during my trip - at least 5 of them.
Along the way, I stumbled across some classic Malaysian snacks, like Tealive pearl milk tea, a mango smoothie, a cup of corn, a Ramly Burger, and more. I wasn't successful in my search to get a close look at the Panasonic G85 DSLR, but the ride on the KTM train was interesting, and the 5-Snack Challenge introduced me to a bunch of local food and drinks that I might have otherwise never tried.
Cheers,
Douglas (AKA The Cycling Canadian)

I reached the stage where I press the thumbs up button before watching the video... just because I am so happy there is a new video... Looks like I am becoming a groupie. ^^ I need to try the mangga susu when I visit Malaysia next summer. I will just make sure that I share it. Nice to see the cranes moving during the timelapse. Thanks for taking us with you on this KTM trip and snack hunt.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. 😃 If you get a mangga susu from that particular shop, you will definitely have to share it. I think I could have finished it easily on a normal day. But on that day, I'd already had the pearl milk tea and the iced tea. So that giant mango smoothie came as a bit of a (pleasant) shock. I wasn't expecting anything quite so large. The movement of the crane was also my favorite part of the timelapse. While I was sitting there, I honestly thought the cranes didn't move at all. They moved so slowly that my eyes didn't pick up on it. It was only when I saw the completed timelapse that I saw them swinging around and actually moving construction materials into place. That gives me an idea that if I finish my quest for a new camera and get one with a timelapse function, I should go back there and film just the cranes at the top on a timelapse with a telephoto lens. With my smartphone, I can only get that very wide shot. Will your trip be your first time to Malaysia? Or are you a regular visitor?

Thanks. I always enjoy a good timelapse myself. It's as much a surprise to me as anyone when I see the final video. The clouds didn't seem to be moving at all when I was sitting there. And I never saw the cranes move. I thought the construction crew had taken the day off. 😃 But on the timelapse, you can clearly see the cranes swinging around, the elevators going up and down, and, of course, the clouds building and moving. I'll figure out my camera situation someday. I found a camera store today that does sell the Panasonic G85, but they have to import it from another country. If I decide I really want it, they can get it for me in about two weeks.

I agree with you. In my case, too, I don't have a very good sense of taste. I like simple, basic food, so I probably couldn't tell the difference between ordinary food and food from a "famous" restaurant. And it suits my personality to just wander around and snack on whatever I stumble across. It's more fun that seeking out the famous places. 😃

FYI, the fish sticks you ate was the local Malay version of fish sausage, so to say. It is mostly produced in the east coast states where fishery is extensive. They ground the fish to paste, mixed tapioca flour in, then it gets rolled into long strips and blanched. The one you had was cut in big chunks, but some vendors you can find thinly sliced which makes the fried product crispier. Generally the grade of the sausage depends on the fish-to-flour ratio, with more fish being higher grade. The holy grail for local street foodies is to find the vendor that uses the darker, higher grade fish sausage. Also, apparently Ramly burger is sold in New York City for $50.

Thanks for the background. That certainly makes the snack I had more interesting. At the time, to be honest, it didn't seem that special. It wasn't bad or anything, but there wasn't much flavor. It was only after several bites that I even started to taste the fish. Then again, I do not have a well-developed palate. I'm a bit of a caveman when it comes to food. 😃 I think I was supposed to have it with the hot sauce, but as I said in the video, I didn't know how to get the hot sauce from the tiny plastic bag to the food without making a huge mess. I think the vendor gave it to me in a "to go" package, and he didn't realize I was going to sit at the table and eat it there.

Not being a foodie, that's about the best I can do. 😄 When it comes to food, I'm a simple man. Of course, this whole 5-snack challenge wasn't about finding the best and tastiest dishes. It was just a goofy and fun thing that I hoped would encourage me to stop just walking by all these food and snacks stalls. And it worked out well. My favourite scene was Doug dropping his train token! Made my day!! Your mammoth mangga susu is probably carried by bike or car by the customer. The 'fish sticks': left over fish parts & un-purchased fish, then mashed with added flavour. A few extra adjectives when describing your delicacies would be nice. Well done on the time-lapse! Looked like you were in your element at that time. Cheers!
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
As I mentioned in my message, I find I'm dropping things and doing other absent-minded things all the time now. The hope is that shooting video will become second nature eventually, and my brain can get back to making sure I'm on the right train and not dropping things or forgetting things. I imagine they do deliver those mangga susu by car. I noticed the sign where they had a promo for when you order 10 at a time. So they must routinely handle large orders. Nobody is carrying 10 of those anywhere by hand. 🙂 Your description of the fish sticks doesn't exactly make them appealing. Fish parts and unpurchased fish? 😂 I'm going to have to work on my adjectives for food. Descriptive terms don't easily spring to mind. I'm a bit of a simpleton when it comes to food as you know. To be honest, I was pretty tired when I shot that time lapse, and it was kind of a relief to lie down and rest on that cement. I could have taken a nap there, I think. It was funny because it was right beside a giant glass wall beside the MRT, and I was in full view of the hundreds of people riding up and down the escalator. Everyone was a bit curious why this foreigner was spread out and apparently sleeping in the park. Perhaps life had gone very wrong for this poor fellow.

That's keropok lekor (fish flour snack). the authentic one is in terengganu/kelantan/pahang. in Klang Valley they put the amount of flour more than the fish. Ask the google where you can find the authentic one in Klang Valley. and mangga susu is RM5 quiet expensive but with the amount you get (large cup) that should be a fair price.

You dont have to wait for 1 hour to go to mid valley from central station unless commuter train is having very bad technical problem.usually takes 15 to 20 mnutes waiting times.major renovation work at old train station and certain part of the track is under maintainance and upgrading work
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
You're right about KL Sentral. The wait time looks to be from 15 to 30 minutes between trains. That's according to their online schedule. But it's a different story at the old Kuala Lumpur Station. The regular schedule has a full hour between trains. And right now with the upgrading work, some of the trains have been cancelled. So the wait can be 2 hours now. That was true for me. My train was at 10:44, and the next train after that was at 12:41. There used to be a train at 11:45 or something like that, but it isn't running right now. Not that it mattered to me, though. I wasn't taking the KTM Komuter to get to Mid Valley fast or even conveniently. 😀 I was just doing it for the fun and for the experience. I'd kind of explored the LRT, MRT, and the Monorail, and I wanted to add the KTM to the list.

Hey Doug. It was good to view another leisurely vid. Hope your camera shopping improves just like the Casio hunting Good to see you're expanding your palette with some local snacks esp regarding what you mentioned to me staying healthy. There are so many in M'sia to suit all tastes from what I remember in my youth. Just watch the sugar content which is usually quite high. If you like ice cold desserts I recommend ice kachang and cendol. Look them up and see if you fancy them. Re. your travel plans... how are the Myanmar plans going? Have you checked out the visa situation or perhaps you've decided on other destinations as mentioned in this vid. How about Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam? Would like to know about your experiences if you've already been. Many thanks and happy and safe trails to you. Lu
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know if the camera shopping will have as good an ending as the Casio hunting. It may not come across in the videos, but I actually know quite a bit about the various cameras available, and there really isn't a single camera model that ticks all the boxes for me. I think this year, a bunch of new cameras will be released, and one of them might be the perfect one. But it might not be available until a year from now. The Panasonic G85 that I've been thinking about is actually a good option. However, it's difficult to get really excited about spending that much money on a camera that came out three years ago. It might not have that "new car smell" anymore. And the other main option for me (the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II) came out four years ago. So they're both kind of old, especially when you consider how fast camera technology is advancing now. Yes, it's been fun to try some new snacks and foods. But with my relatively low interest in food, I had to come up with the 5-snack challenge to trick myself into trying new things. So far, it has been successful. I actually went on another 5-snack challenge on my next shopping expedition, and I shot some video of that as well. (Another rather leisurely video. 🙂 ) I think ice kachang and cendol would be very challenging for me. I see cendol all the time, and it strikes me as a frighteningly colorful mixture of stuff that really should never be mixed together. 😂 And it is all on top of a bowl of shaved ice. It's a very foreign concept to a fellow like me. But I'll have to give one a try and see how it goes. Travel plans is a big question. I've been so busy that I haven't really come to grips with making final decisions about what comes next. My poor brain can only do one thing at a time, and I've been putting off making travel plans until I get the camera/computer thing settled. I still plan to visit Myanmar before I leave Asia. But I haven't decided on the timing of that trip yet. Yes, I've been to all three of the countries you mentioned: Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. They were three very different experiences. I went to Vietnam decades ago when I first started backpacking around Asia. I had no idea what I was doing, and it was a big adventure for me. And Vietnam was very different back then, too. It was still relatively closed off. It was impossible to go anywhere north of Hanoi into the mountains. That was all restricted. And even to travel between Saigon and Hanoi, I had to get a police permit for every single town I wanted to stay in. I had a great experience there particularly because I was so young and inexperienced. Just sitting down at a typical food stall on the street and ordering some noodles was a huge adventure for me. Everything was new and exciting. Some of the pictures from that trip are on my blog here: www.thecyclingcanadian.com/photo-galleries/vietnam-photos-2/ As for Cambodia, I went there on a short cycling trip. I was working full time in Taiwan at the time, but I managed to convince my bosses to give me a month off. And I went to Cambodia. In retrospect, it was a bit too much to go through all the effort of preparing a touring bike and bringing it to Cambodia and then cycling around for such a short time. Plus, the bike was not a true touring bike. It was the city bike that I was using in Taipei, and it did not stand up very well to the tough roads I faced. But I still had an interesting time there, a highlight being Angkor Wat, of course. Maybe I got lucky, but the mood was just right and I found Angkor Wat to be amazing. I think having my own bicycle helped a lot, as I could go to Angkor Wat early in the morning on my own and explore anywhere I wanted to go on my bicycle. I still had a film camera in those days, and taking pictures wasn't as easy. It was also much more expensive. But I did quite a few pictures. A lot of them are on my blog. And I kept a journal. I'll put a link to the photos and the journal here. You can check them out if you are interested. Photos: www.thecyclingcanadian.com/photo-galleries/cambodia-galleries/ Journal: www.thecyclingcanadian.com/cambodia-bike-trip/ And my trip to Laos was completely different. Unfortunately, things did not work out on that trip. The problem was that I just went there as a normal backpacker, and I wasn't ready for that. By that point, I had done long cycling trips through two countries in Africa and I had done a lot of other interesting things around Asia. So, traveling through Laos by bus along with hundreds of other foreign backpackers just like me felt weird. I didn't like it at all. The atmosphere also seemed to be all about drinking and partying and "tubing" in places like Vang Vieng. I think Laos would be a great place for a cycling trip, but I just wasn't in the mood to be part of the herd of backpackers going to all the same places and doing all the same things. And, as you can probably imagine, I'm not exactly the type to enjoy getting drunk and tubing down a river with rock and roll blasting from the shoreline. 😃 I'm not sure if I would return to those countries. I think it would be worthwhile and quite a different experience to go on a long bike tour through Laos and Vietnam. But there are lots of countries in other parts of the world that I haven't been to at all, and I might focus on them instead. One of my mild resolutions for 2019 is to make an effort to visit new countries rather than revisiting old places I've already been. (I'm not sure if that will actually happen, but you never know.)

the broken window (first version) caused by the combination of air con and heat at the same time. The non broken one is the new replacement (heat proof glass)
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
That makes sense to me. I can see extreme heat and extreme cold on two sides of the glass would apply an uneven pressure, and it would break more easily. Most people say that people are breaking the windows by throwing rocks, but I have trouble imagining that many Malaysians doing something like that.

There are many large camera stores at midvalley including an Olympus center. The Harvey Norman there has many 4/3 cameras too. After the effort to get to MV, you should have tried those other shops. Key color is not that great in my opinion lol
@PlanetDoug

I'd actually been to Mid Valley quite a few times before, and I've been to all the camera stores there. 😃 The Olympus center is particularly good. I really like the sales staff there. They're really helpful, and they know Olympus cameras very well. On this particular trip, I was interested in one specific camera - the Panasonic G85 - and I understood that Key Color sold them. I knew they sold Panasonic cameras because I'd seen them there before. I just assumed they'd have the G85, but I guess it's too old, and there is no demand for it. So they don't stock it. I learned today that, in fact, the G85 kit that I'm interested in (with the 12-60mm lens) is not even sold in Malaysia at all. Only the kit with the 14-42mm lens is available here. To get the 12-60 kit, they'd have to order it and have it shipped in from outside Malaysia. Takes a couple of weeks. I'm still hemming and hawing on the direction I want to take. Perhaps the universe is telling me that the G85 is not the way to go... 😄

I guess I got lucky with that bit of video. The area around these apartment buildings is actually pretty dirty. There are lots of junk cars just rotting away. And the garbage bins aren't big enough for all the people living there, so the garbage spills out and blows around all over the place. So it's not very clean. 🙂 But I guess this particular lane looked better.

@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much. I appreciate it. One twist, however, is that the kit I'm interested in isn't sold in Malaysia. At least, this is what I was told at another camera store today. As far as I know, the G85 comes in two different kits: one kit has the 14-42mm lens. The other kit has the 12-60mm lens. I'm interested in the 12-60 kit lens, and that is the one that isn't available here. The guy at the camera store I went to today said that they can get it, but it has to be imported from somewhere else. It takes about two weeks. I'd consider getting just the camera body, too. All my Olympus lenses will work on the G85. It's just that the 12-60 is supposed to be a pretty good lens, and it is much cheaper when it comes as part of the kit. I'll be interested to hear if any stores at Mutiara Damansar carry any G85's at all. It's a bit of an older model now, since it came out in 2016, and stores don't seem to stock it anymore. 🙂

I'm not a fan of the hot sun either. In fact, the hot weather in Asia in general is the hardest thing for me to adjust to. But in my head, I think I flipped a switch that just accepts it. There's nothing I can do about the heat or humidity, so I just walk around whether the sun is beating down or not. I recently went on a bike ride around Sumatra, and part of that was accepting that I would be drenched in sweat all day every day. I knew I couldn't fight it, so I just accepted it as part of life. 😂

I often wonder how people feel when they move from anywhere in Asia to Europe or North America. I know that in cities in Canada, there are almost zero food stalls or snack carts or even markets anywhere. Going out to a restaurant is expensive and reserved for special occasions. But in Asia, you can't walk twenty feet without coming across someone selling some kind of delicious food or drink right on the streets. When people move away, they must miss that a lot.

I've done a lot of research, and there isn't one camera model that combines all the features I want like Panasonic does. 🔹 Later this year, Sony might release a Sony A7000. And if that camera has effective IBIS and some kind of articulating LCD screen, it might be an option. Unfortunately, it will likely cost $1,500 US just for the body.

Tanah Melayu is the Malay language equivalent of Malaya. Malaya was Malaysia's name before the Borneon states joined the union.
