My guest house in Mawlamyine (Myanmar) arranged for a share taxi to come pick me up at seven thirty in the morning. I assumed this car would pick me up and we would hit the road on our way to the border with Thailand at Myawaddy and Mae Sot. But, as always, things didn't quite work out that way.
Cheers,

You can overstay in Myanmar. They charge $3 per day. If you stay 30 days, it will be $90. If you go to Thailand and apply E-Visa ($50), I think it will cost you more than $90.

In a way, shooting video helps me to have a positive attitude. It's kind of like stepping outside your mind and seeing things from a different perspective. Then you can see whatever is happening as an interesting or amusing story rather than as inconvenience or discomfort. Does that make any sense? Sure, it was uncomfortable to have four people crowded into the narrow back seat of this share taxi. But when you get out your GoPro and start filming, you just naturally start to smile and see the humor in it. 😀

I agree that 4 people in the back was just a little bit too much. I felt bad for the other people when they brought me over and told me to get in. Those three people already in the back seat were nice and comfortable, and now they all had to push over and be so uncomfortable. At least I was sitting beside the door and window, and I could lean back against the seat. The poor guy beside me was forced to sit forward with no back rest for the entire trip. I was actually quite surprised at the pleasant atmosphere in the shared taxi. Everyone seemed happy and relaxed despite the uncomfortable circumstances. And they all chatted the whole time. I really wish I could have understood what they were saying, but the passengers and the driver talked to each other non-stop. They didn't know each other, but they were like friends having an amusing and interesting conversation for hours. I could be wrong about this, but motion sickness seems to be much more common in Asia than elsewhere. On many occasions, I've been on buses and cars and even in the back of trucks and on boats in places like Vietnam, Nepal, Cambodia, and Indonesia, and I felt fine. And the other foreign backpackers were fine. But the local people would be throwing up a lot during the trip. I always wondered why so many local people got sick so easily on these trips.

It’s great to watch your trip from Mawlamyein to Mae Sot. It happened that my father was among the troops from the First Burma Regiment who were ambushed and killed by insurgents between Kawkareik and Myawaddy in 1959 when I was hardly five. The Regiment was stationed in Mawlamyein by that time. I’ve never been there since then. And I don’t think I would be able to go and see that faithful place. Personally I don’t mind sharing a taxi with strangers but the congestion can be rather nauseating. On top of that the road condition is not very pleasant and the long hours on the road is also purposely made longer with so many detours. How you managed to put up with the unpleasant circumstances is something not many people can do. You continue to amaze your viewers with your patience and endurance. Well done, Doug.

Great stuff again as it is so honest and real. Shared taxi’s do my head in for all these reasons. Particularly the pick up round! Why cannot they just go from the bus station or booking office? Everyone makes their own way their, gets on and we are all away! Does not help that they pick me up first and drop me last EVERY TIME. Still, I guess they are cheap! As always, well done for staying calm!
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 4 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. The pick up round is always amusing and quite the experience. In this case, I honestly thought I had skipped that step because my guest house had booked the share taxi for me. And since the Breeze is a popular spot for foreign backpackers, I just assumed the share taxi would show up with two or three other foreigners in it already, and we'd hit the road. Or we'd stop at one or two other guest houses and then hit the road. I never imagined that the share taxi would pick me up and THEN just take me to the street where all the share taxis hang out and wait to fill up. Had I known that, I might have been a bit more proactive and done something differently. 🙂 It's fascinating glimpse into a different world, though. It's definitely not very efficient, but it's also kinder and gentler. I didn't film any of it, but when we got to the city of Kawkareik, the driver took everyone right to their door. And the passengers themselves didn't know where they were going. They just had an address of some kind. So we drove all over the city with the driver pulling to the side, getting out, and going up to random people and into shops to ask people for directions. No one was in a hurry. No one was stressed out. The service level from the driver was off the charts. And I thought it was funny that when the driver jammed me into the already crowded back seat, he took the time to explain to me why this was okay. He said that those three people weren't going all the way to the border. They were going to get out at some other town first, and then he would take me to the border. He pointed to himself and then to me as if to indicate that from that point, it would just be me and him - a private car and private driver to the border. But, of course, once we dropped everyone off in Kawkareik, he drove all over the city looking for more passengers and packages to fill up all the empty space and take them to the border with us. I thought that was pretty amusing. And when we finally got to Myawaddy, instead of taking us to the border crossing, he first drove all over that city dropping off and delivering all the packages that were in the back. We drove down all these crazy one-way streets with no exits at the end. Then he would get out of the car and go looking for someone to take delivery of these packages. And then we would be trapped there with no way to get out, and he'd have to do crazy fifteen-point turns to get us turned around and out of there. Of course, from my perspective, I'm thinking, "Dude, drop us off first, and THEN go deliver all your packages." But, just like you, I was the very last person or thing to get delivered. I always am. 😂

Hey Doug, another great video! I enjoyed watching as you travelled in your taxi across the country and dirt roads to the border crossing to Thailand. I also felt your frustration on the issue with your laptop. Are you planning to get a newer laptop? I know its expensive but its an important part of making your videos. If not, how about getting a new battery? May I know what kind of laptop it is? Perhaps we can check out the price of new battery?
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do plan to get a new laptop. To be honest, I'd need one even if I weren't trying to edit videos for KZfaq. My current laptop has so many problems that it is barely up to the challenge of basic web surfing and sending emails. I need a new laptop no matter what. I'm a little bit out of my depth when it comes to judging which laptop is suitable for video editing. But I've been doing some research, and I have some ideas about the basic specs I'd need. But it can get complicated - and expensive - quite quickly. I assume I'll buy a new laptop when I return to Kuala Lumpur sometime early next year. My current laptop is an older Dell Inspiron 11 3000-series. I tried to get a new battery for it many times, but I was always told they were unavailable. Recently, people have sent me links to where I can buy this battery online, so I guess what the computer stores told me was incorrect. But at this point, it's probably too late to bother with a new battery. 🙂 This laptop also needs a new keyboard. And the case itself has split open and cracked so much that moving the screen and changing the angle also disconnects the power. I'm holding it all together with Scotch tape. It's a bit nuts. 😀
@matthewnah8956
@matthewnah8956 4 жыл бұрын
@@PlanetDoug Wow.. ok. That's a really old laptop.. but yes, I suppose you find it online. Nevertheless if you do get a new laptop, it will cost double if not more than a new GoPro Hero 8! I am using the G3 Dell, Intel CORE i7, with Solid State Drive (helps as really really fast to start-up!) and that set me back nearly 5K Malaysian Ringgit. But it simply excellent when editing videos.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 4 жыл бұрын
That's one thing I learned when I was looking at new laptops - gaming laptops like the Dell G3 are very good for video editing. In fact, they seemed to be the best deal. You can get a laptop with very powerful specs for less money. A few clerks at Dell shops and other places guided me to their gaming laptops as an option when I mentioned that I wouldn't mind being able to edit 4K video. They seemed great... until I picked them up. Then I found out that they were a bit on the heavy side to throw into a backpack. Of course, that brought me back to the premium lightweight laptops more suitable for traveling, and then the price jumped up considerably. For home use, though, those gaming laptops seemed ideal. I'm sure I'll find a suitable laptop. I just have to do some research and shopping around.

Good video, again! Merry Christmas from Norway! How much will this trip cost if you have a taxi alone?
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about that. I guess it depends on if the price is the same for local people and for foreigners. But if everyone normally pays 12,000 kyats, then paying for all 5 seats would come to about $40 US. But I've read a few stories online where paying for the whole car didn't work out anyway. Foreigners will negotiate to pay for all the empty seats and pay extra so that the car will leave right away and not make any stops and go faster. But then the driver will pick up other people anyway and fill the whole car. And there isn't much the foreigner can do about it if they handed over the money in advance. I think there is such a strong habit of utilizing every square inch of space in one of these local cars or buses that leaving seats empty and NOT filling up the back with boxes and packages is nearly impossible. It's such an ingrained habit. 😀

I travel from Kanchanaburi to Dawei twice a year using the border crossing at Htee Khee-Myanmar side. From Htee Khee to Dawei or vice versa, this type of taxi sharing is very typical, no fixed timetable or no fixed number of passengers per taxi. By the way, since you are already in Mae Sot, I recommend your next leg of journey to Dawei which has different language, culture, food and atmosphere.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't realize that that border crossing was even possible. I'd never heard of it before. Even when you look at Google Maps, it doesn't look like there is anything there - not even any roads. It looks like that trip would be quite interesting, though. 🙂
@htooaungwai
@htooaungwai 4 жыл бұрын
@@PlanetDoug There are two routes to reach to Dawei from your current location. www.seat61.com/Map-southeast-asia-train-routes.htm. either via Mawlamyine or Kanchanaburi. For the route via Mawlamyine, there are daily express buses to Dawei. If you are adventurous, there is train service from Mawlamyine to Dawei although I haven't experienced it before. But if you love history and train ride, I would recommend the trip via Kanchanaburi. I think there are plenty of minivans or buses from MaeSot to Bangkok-MoChit bus terminal. You can take another bus or minivan Kan..buri or train if you like historic railway. From Kanchanaburi, there are minivans every 30 minutes to the border, Pu-Nan-Ron (Thai)/Htee Khee(Myanmar). The road between Htee Khee and Dawei is very strategic and plays an important role to shape not only the history of Dawei but also Myanmar. During Medieval time, the road was used by both Burmese and Siamese armies to attack each other's capitals. So, Dawei was in Burmese Kingdom, then fell into the hands of Siamese, then back to Burmese until Brits took it after first Anglo-Burmese wars. That's why we speak a unique language which is completely different from official Burmese language. The same applies to culture and traditions (For examples, our Thingyan (Water festival) dates are different from Yangon. In Thadingyut (Festival of Light), Yangonians sent the light to the sky, but we sent the light down the river using almbowls) During WW2, Japanese army marched from Kanchanaburi to Mawlamyine via Dawei under very British's nose using the same route. Even in recent days, Karen ethics forces used this road during civil unrest. More importantly, the road is very safe. I hope this historical facts convince you to visit Dawei and I love to see my hometown in your video. :)

No, I did not put up my mosquito net in this cubicle. I normally put it up everywhere. It isn't always easy, but I use a variety of hooks and ropes and tape and all kinds of strange techniques to somehow attach the corners to different places around the hotel rooms. But the walls of this cubicle were almost completely smooth, and it would have been very difficult to attach the cords to anything. Plus, it was so small that it was difficult to move around, and on that first night, I was so tired that I just couldn't be bothered. If I remember right, there were actually a lot of mosquitoes there. I think if I stayed there a long time, I would have found a way to put up my mosquito net. But I stayed just two or three nights, and then I moved to a new place.

@@PlanetDoug Thanks. Yes I saw your net in one of your videos. I'd like to see some more varieties of putting it up. I don't trust them. That's why I normally take a lot of pills against malaria, but that's no real solution. Maybe I'll buy myself a self-standing tent such as the Big Agnes (which would also help against bed bugs). Well in Northern Thailand where your're staying Malaria is probably not such a big issue. In other places it would be. Many people use the net. They just kept trying to input the details and then hit "save" but they just got an error message back. They all smiled at me and reassured me that everything was fine, and they just gestured at the computer to say that it was a computer problem. 🙂

@@humanxxx5669 Yes, it can be pretty noisy. Dorm rooms at hostels are usually fairly noisy. This one was better than most because the dorm wasn't just a bunch of separate beds in a big room. Because everyone got their own "capsule" and there was a curtain for each one, the noise didn't travel as much. However, they did have a big metal staircase on wheels that people could push around the room to make it easier to climb up to their capsule. THAT was quite noisy. 🙂 I always use earplugs, though, and that helps quite a bit.

50:00 Just buy a new battery for the laptop, quite cheap over there in Thailand

I've looked around in quite a few computer repair shops in Malaysia, Myanmar, and in Thailand, and I wasn't able to get a battery for this laptop. People have since sent me links to batteries I can buy through online shops, but I didn't know about that before. The tech guys at the computer shops told me that batteries for this laptop weren't available anymore. But I guess they were wrong. At this point, I'm pretty sure it's a good idea to just get a new laptop. It's time. 🙂

Doug, don't you think this is the right time to replace your laptop battery. Power surge during boost process is really bad idea for your hard drive and OS.

I tried to get a new battery many times, but I couldn't find one. All the computer shops I went to in Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand told me they were unavailable for this model. It was either too old or too unusual or something. It turns out that they were wrong. People have sent me links to proper batteries that are available online. But at this point, I pretty much need a whole new laptop. This one has many more problems than just the dead battery. 🙂

@@PlanetDoug if your laptop is older than 5yrs and CPU & Ram are not top spec, it is time to replace. New light weight laptop with decent spec can get around $500. If you top up about another $300, you can get SSD drive with delicated graphic card. I'm a fan dell pc and using XPS15 for 2yrs.

you really should fix your laptop issue. either get a new battery or a new laptop. do you really use Windows Movie Maker ? I'm guessing on Windows 7 ? Windows will run disk check after a power loss, but frequent power loss might damage the hard drive. Just curious, how much data, says a video like this, takes ? you must have like multiple external hard drives i'd guess.

The plan is to buy a new laptop when I return to Malaysia. Even a new battery (if I could find one) wouldn't help much with my current computer. The keyboard is also giving me lots of problems. The space bar and the letters on the right side (plus the letter "e", which popped off ) barely work now. It makes typing very slow and difficult. 😀 Even worse, the hinges on the screen (lid) have broken. The force of the hinges have pulled out the screws holding the base of the laptop, and when I open the lid, it pulls apart the entire laptop. The case itself splits open, and this also disconnects the power. So I have to hold the computer case tightly closed with my fingers every time I move the screen, or it disconnects the power. It's a bit of a mess. I'm amazed it is still operating at all. 🙂 Yes, I use Windows MovieMaker. I do have Windows 10 on this laptop, and it is the latest updated version. But no other video editing software will work. I've tried them all, and my laptop can't run any of them. Just MovieMaker. And, yes, video file storage is a problem. At the moment, I keep everything - all old video files - and I think I've filled up four portable hard drives. They're 2-terrabyte drives, so I currently have 8 terrabytes of old video files. It's not feasible to keep doing this. I can't exactly carry around an entire backpack of portable hard drives. I'll probably have to delete files as I go once I've exported a final video for KZfaq. When I go out shooting video for a day, I end up with between 20 gigabytes and 50 gigabytes of data. This share taxi trip to the border was on the smaller size, and I have 20 gigabytes of video files. When I took the train from Yangon to Mawlamyine, I ended up with 52 gigabytes of video files. So, it's a lot. It's funny, but simply copying the video files from the camera's memory cards to my laptop and then to a portable hard drive can be a big job. It takes forever. And that's just copying files. I'm learning that anything to do with video requires more time than you'd think. And using an old, broken, underpowered laptop is kind of a nightmare. To keep making videos, I'll definitely have to upgrade to a better laptop. 🙂

50:25 - after 3 times.. I'd just put the laptop away...

I probably should have. I think I just got stubborn. The power would stay on for a while, and I'd think that NOW I can finally boot up and then shut down properly. And then I'll put the computer away and not turn it on again. But then, the power would go out again. I'd tried so many times by then that I felt invested, and I wanted to beat the system. 😀

I wish I could have spoken with the other people in the shared taxi and learned their stories. I chatted with them a little in English, but the language barrier was a bit too much to get past. And everyone in the taxi had a great conversation for the whole trip. I was so surprised about that. The driver seemed to have a hundred funny stories to tell, and they chatted and laughed the whole time. I really wanted to know what they were talking about. 🙂

"The lion and the calf shall lie down together but the calf won't get much sleep" So, you're the lion or the calf? 🤣 You book the hostel before your credit card got cancelled?
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 4 жыл бұрын
Everybody wants to be a lion, but I think I'm much more a calf in terms of my personality and character. It did seem like an odd expression to put onto the walls of a hostel, since the whole idea is to be comfortable and get a good night of sleep. 🙂 Yes, I had booked my capsule room at the Sleep Nest before my credit card was cancelled. They didn't charge my credit card, though. They don't operate that way. You just pay in cash when you show up. But they need a valid credit card on record in order to accept your reservation.
