If you own a car, you’ll know how much effort it requires to keep track of all the maintenance your vehicle requires. It needs regular servicing, gas, and oil changes to keep it in tip-top condition. However, if there is one thing that most vehicle owners fail to pay attention to, it’s the tires. The tire is an incredible invention that revolutionized the motor industry and made it possible for the heavy-duty vehicles you see today. That being said, tires might be getting one of the biggest upgrades they’ve ever seen: airless tires.
The pneumatic tire has been around for more than a century
While it was John Boyd of Dunlop who invented the pneumatic tire in 1887 for his son’s bicycle, it was Andre Michelin who perfected the design. Michelin invented the first pneumatic tire that was fitted on the automobile in 1895.
Why air matters to a pneumatic tire
Air is really important for the tires we have used until this point. While that may seem pretty obvious, air can make a world of difference to the lifespan of a tire. Without air, a tire would go through severe wear and tear and, if not fixed, ultimately blow out.
Michelin’s new airless tire prototype
Now in a bid to revolutionize the industry, Michelin and General Motors have come out with a new airless wheel for automobiles called the UPTIS prototype, which stands for “Unique Puncture-Proof Tire System.” The airless tire was unveiled at the Movin’On Summit in 2019 with production proposed for 2024. If u add side covers on the tyres, it'll solve the mudding problem and will also visually resemble a conventional air tyre... Then the customers just have to choose the superior tyre.

What happens when you get mud or snow let's say ,stuck in between some of the support columns,this will cause the tire to become unbalanced at higher speeds.

You have a point. I think a new design would come with some lifestyle changes. If debris were caught in the rubber spokes it could cause some imbalance. I think it would be easy enough to give your tires a quick rinse if they were that dirty, but nonetheless that seems accurate. I’m less concerned about snow over mud, because there’s likely to be enough heat generated during normal driving conditions to melt the snow.

to improve roll resistance the external rubber or tyre profile can be an interchangeable tension belt to be removed and recycled when worn out. tension belt can create stiffness in the tyre perimeter similar to compressed air effect inside regular tyres

What about motorbikes and the lean factor when cornering? Would that be a problem in terms of the stress put on the tyre?
@jaixc

Personally you're not going to see an airless tweel on a motorcycle anytime soon, at least not street legal. Heck, they're barely on 4 wheel vehicles and still testing the rigidity and how much wear and tear on the tire caps at high speed cornering and straight lines. I just don't see why the tweels have to be flat all of the time.. I mean normal tires aren't really flat, just a patch of the tire in the center is.. they still have curves on the sidewalls that still have some tread on them to shed water and aid in cornering. I just don't see why they can't just remove the air.. and build a wheel that doesn't require pneumatic pressure to keep it's rigidity, then you could utilize the tires already being built as a transition to a full on tweel. they would be similar to already low profile tires, only then they wouldn't need to be aired up, and still utilize the tread on the tires we already have.. maybe not so much of the sidewalls.
@curtisgrindahl446

One thing not mentioned is that the market for wheels will disappear since the tire is integrated to the wheel. They don't need to be balanced either, so you can expect shops that mount tires will offer much reduced services, ideally for a much lower price... or they'll watch consumers mount their own tires that are shipped directly to their home. Fascinating.

Seems like adding a sidewall with vents to handle the change in compression would solve the issue of getting debris in the support structure and would go along way towards helping the aesthetics of the tire even if it means paying a price on helping to prevent hydroplaning

What about in cold regions? Wouldn't ice/snow/low temps stiffen the rubber/plastic? I would think it would lead to breaks or fractures of the material.
@MrSaemichlaus
@MrSaemichlaus 2 жыл бұрын
That shouldn't be too much of an issue, standard tires have the same engineering problem. Winter tires have a softer compound that has the same elasticity as a summer tire in warmer temperatures. In the design with open sides, the cushioning fins between the rim and the web would get a lot more cooling than the inside of a standard tire, but the web can be a different compound than the fins, so they can choose appropriate compounds for each part of the tire. Furthermore I assume they show the open sides for promoting the concept and they will possibly close them up in the long run for safety reasons and to mitigate the problem of mud, snow and ice getting stuck in the sides.

Nice idea, however, what will they cost? I seldom get flat tyres ( I think 2 in the past 20 years of driving) and these seem to be part of the actual wheel frame. When the tread wears do I have to replace the wheel frame as well? If they are not cheaper than normal tyres or competitively prices with the frame they will be a flop.

8/15/21, Sure, I think it's a great idea. Researching ZT lawnmowers, they're already available. Although very costly, they're best suited for commercial users. My Gravely ZT is strictly homeowner grade, original tires will suffice. ****Just 1 major caveat****How do you account for different load/TP requirements?
@bertram-raven
@bertram-raven 2 жыл бұрын
Those requirements are to prevent bowing or crowning of the tyre as the weight changes and stiffening of the sidewall to take the load. Without the air the problem is simply one of maximum weight the tyre can take, not a problem of vertical load resilience.

One thing people should keep in mind. The reason the pneumatic tire has been around so long and that it really hasn't changed in design (except for materials), is that it works and works well. Despite hundreds of attempts at making a better ice cream scoop, the one invented over 100 years ago seems to be the one most people prefer because it's cheap, efficient and works best. New doesn't always mean better. I'm thinking the same about these new tires. To the announcer: It's pronounced "Misch-el-in" not "Mitch-el-in" You'd think in an ad (basically what this is) for the company, you'd get it right.

Since it really isn’t dependent on any recently discovered or invented technology, it begs the question why weren’t they working on this decades ago? Perhaps similar to the auto parts racket, tire manufacturers wanted you to have to replace your tires every couple of years? Perhaps now they realize how terribly ecologically irresponsible it was to convert crude oil into synthetic rubber and over time amass billions of old tires in landfills, lakes, streams, woodlands, and backyards? At least with electric vehicles you could argue that battery technology wasn’t ready thirty years ago.
