Definitely sidewalls. Without them, debris/snow would get in between the spokes and make the tires imbalanced. Also, the tires would be less aerodynamic.

Tire sidewalls are definitely needed. The reporter was so enamored with the concept he didn't ask any hard questions: - What happens to balance if mud or debris gets in those open parts of the wheel - Does the wheel develop flat spots if it sits for a while - especially in hot weather on asphalt. - What happens when one of those "spokes" fails? How does that affect the performance? How many have to fail to need a new tire? - What is the primary reason (so far) for failure? Speed, road conditions, etc.. Need to know that so you can determine if it's right for you depending on where you live and normal road conditions there. - What is the maximum weight limit? Are there different sizes for different uses? Cars, SUV's, light trucks, etc. And do they all perform similarly? - How long do these normally last? What is the cost/mile compared to conventional tires? - What are temperature limits for use (cold limits and heat limits) before the tire warps, becomes too stiff or deforms enough to become unsafe?

Yes I do remember seeing these made mentioned off years ago and I think they got a lot of push back from the petroleum industry and the tire industry because they were disruptive technology. Also I a certain anything that is designed has to be done so in a way that is will still wear and have a limited life cycle as to not kill off sales of new tires. One final observation. It would be interesting to hear the tires explained in conventional terms like speed rating and load ratings PSI. I doubt they can stand up against a pothole or and very highspeed corner. Or do burnout for that matter from the looks of the outer flap of rubber.

I've been seeing this sort of design for about a decade and I'm glad to see them hit the market. I'd say put the sidewall on to keep debris, rocks, etc. out of the vanes. It could be a porous material, but they need to keep larger objects out to prevent damage.
@basementracer7622
@basementracer7622 2 жыл бұрын
No thanks to the porous, over long drives I think the tires would carry water making them heavier. Then once stopped the tire would fully drain leaking dirty nasty stained road filth water all over your drive. Not saying it will hold all water that enters via the porous side walls but it would hold liquid until rotation stopped due to the non porous nature of the rest of it. IMHO if it has sidewalls they need to be NON porous, that said, side walls will add considerable weight to the tire sucking fuel economy, wearing brakes and all the rest of it. Rotational mass is a very big deal when it come to car wheels and tires. Liquids are heavy too, so porous sidewalls will not only add weight but they would allow for ingress of liquid itself adding yet more weight. As we can see, the weight issue will become very very real in bad weather. Not to mention, your rotating wheel that has been balanced is not knocked out of balance due to liquid randomly placed around areas on the inside of the tire. Porous sidewalls could be very dangerous and the weight of the tire and the balance of the tire would be constantly fluctuating due to the liquids now present in the tire. In bad weather no sidewalls, you live in Cali or somewhere with next to no rain, sure porous sidewalls it is (still think it's a terrible idea though). Rock and mud on normal highways will not be an issue with no sidewalls, simply not big enough single items to make a difference. You want to use them on you 4x4 to do some off-roading? Yes mud and rocks become an issue so you would need sidewalls, non porous sidewalls.

The title is completely misleading, there have been airless tires of all types of shapes and sizes for over a century! The original purpose for the design of this specific tire was because NASA approached Michelin to design an airless tire to be used in the Mars Rover over 10 or 15 years ago. The tire was meant to not hold any air and withstand the harsh temperatures of the planet. Years later, this design was released to be used in industrial vehicles like skid steers and such. Ive seen videos of civilian pick up trucks testing these out on streets. The video title should be, Michelin releases their airless tires to the public!

My only observation to that is that for rear tires, when carrying more weight in the trunk, the spokes will flex and sag even further, making even a bigger, wider footprint. There's certainly more material in this tire. If these were on every vehicle, how many little spoke repairs would be made compared to puncture repairs today? Discarded tires due to sidewall punctures are recycled today. How recyclable are these tires? These tires certainly won't be used for racing as the pressure/road contact patch appear not to be adjustable as air filled tires are. Combined with a hydrogen racing car? Unless racing rules require these through some sustainability rule, keep dreaming. While I don't have qualms about using Michelin tires, I'm skeptical about this tire, AND this Michelin sales pitch.

This video must've been uploaded again, surely. I remember seeing it around 2-3yrs back. Looking at how the wheel has compressed, it wouldn't last 5mins where I live. The Council here will fix a hole in a speed ramp within 3 days but if it's a pothole, more like 6 months +. I mean, it's bottomed out now. Imagine what would happen after a few weeks going over 3-4 inch potholes.

It just looks so cool without the sidewall.

Outstanding. A long time coming. I have only one question though. How do you prevent road whine since the internal splines are evenly spaced? I don't think you can make them uneven like the tread itself. Thanks

Sidewall or not, for me depends on the look of the car. I'd love to see more in the future about the specs of the tyres and if the mass of the vehicle on each axis, plays a role for the specs we'd have to choose for the tyres.

So, Michelin wants to sell you a whole wheel each time you need a new tyre, but they sugarcoat it with their environmental bs... And everyone seems to buy into it. Even if the tyre and the wheel were not a single assembly, the environmental benefits of "saving" that 20% of tyres from premature scrapping are far outweighed by the fact that manufacturing these new tyres clearly uses way more than 20% more materials. And the added unsprung weight is obviously detrimental for fuel economy.

Well, having tyre where U dont wonder if the presure is good and you know you have à tyre that will work for 5 years no matter what i's great.

I think the sidewall is good for ease of cleaning and to prevent the accumulation of dirt that may also affect wheel balance. For those who would like to have the visual feeling of airless, a clear sidewall if possible would be a good idea.

I've watched for this for seems 20 years anyway, but when I first learned of this reinvention of the wheel which then was called Tweel, being a tire and wheel in one requiring no air.

I think you missed the part of it being a "prototype". I can also add, at my age, I've seen so many prototypes over the years that never came to market, that it's best just to wait for market products before getting one's hopes up.
