I never rated Martin Clunes as an actor when I first saw him . Now he's a National Treasure. His very best performance in my opinion. and Yes, I did shed a tear at the end. Brilliant!

My Grandad Cooper would have been the same age as these boys who were too young to fight in the First World War. He was born in 1902 and was a miner during World War Two. Grandpa Bates was born in 1904 and also the same age as these boys. He didn't fight in World War Two as he made aircraft parts in a factory. Both lived long lives - the latter lived to 93!

As he mentions Cathy. the music begins .fades as Mr chips passed away he speaks the names of his pupils.cathy is said then dies . brilliant music.what is the peice so nice.

I was on summer school holiday and spent 4 weeks behind the cameras at Sherbourne station/school and all over with Sir Micheal Redgrave Peter O toll and Petula Clark as their mascot whike they filmed this ,which later got me into the film world as an actor myself in films only have my dear late mum to thank
