***Goodbye Uncle Tom is a “Shockumentary.”*** It’s a 1971 Big Budget Italian exploitation film that plays more like a parity documentary, than a film. I think I say this in my review - but for anyone interested in watching the review, just letting you know. It’s called out in my review: Two “journalists” go back in time and interview “Elites of the World” as well as “common white folks” about their views on slavery. And in every way imaginable…they demean African Americans from beginning to end of the film with it ending in current day 1971 showing “Black upheavals” against whites in America. That’s the entirety of the film. Just pinning this comment and underlining why I hated the film…yet also realize why it was created, and especially can appreciate its place in history and time.

This is way worse than Cannibal Holocaust in terms of brutality. I think it's a really well-made film and I can't necessarily say I enjoyed watching it, but I was fascinated and impressed (and disgusted) with how far they went. Sadly, a lot of what's in this film is historically accurate, which is terrifying.

Blue Underground put Goodbye Uncle Tom out on DVD years ago, but nobody really talks about it for some reason. I think a lot of botique physical media collectors will be blind buying this film and sending themselves into cinematic culture shock in the near future lol. For other beautifully disturbing and controversial films I'd recommend Salo: The 120 Days of Sodom and Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer. And of course Cannibal Holocaust and the original I Spit On Your Grave are mandatory for any horror or exploitation fans that haven't seen them. All beautiful and thought provoking films that have deeper meaning and lasting impact, yet also quite uncomfortable and difficult watches.

I do own and have seen I spit on your Grave. And I’ve also had the other ones you’ve recommended said to me a few times before. I was stunned by this one. The 4k and “from Blue Unnderground” is what led me to this purchase. They do great 4k transfers. I had zero idea what this about about and it was a blind buy and watch. As I said in the vid…Holy shit… I think what makes it so awful is you know it happened and to SO MANY humans in our past. Just sad. Other exploitation films can be tough watches for sure like “I Spit on your Grave.” You know that stuff happens in life unfortunately. But the whole slavery thing…just so happens to be a hot button topic here in the States due to our history. Touches a nerve for sure. Thanks for weighing in with a great comment with great context. Hope to see you around in future vids…

@@ungraduatedmedia Perhaps I should also suggest doing a bit of light research on the other titles before buying/watching. I've been collecting for more than half my lifetime and stay immersed in horror, cult, and genre cinema, but I can also imagine what it's like blind buying Goodbye Uncle Tom and watching with no context. In some ways that can actually make a film more impactful, but it's also good to know your own boundaries/tolerance when it comes to confrontational horror and exploitation films. Goodbye Uncle Tom is unique from most exploitation cinema in that it's as beautifully crafted as it is audacious and the historical reality is exactly why I recommend it. While the filmmaker's intentions and ethics might be questionable, the film conveys the horrors and atrocities of slavery in a visceral way that no history book or documentary is capable of. It's definitely not my favorite film in Blue Underground's library, and I've seen most of them, but it's probably the only mondo film that's truly a "must watch."

@@beyondsourgrounds5602- that is VERY well said. Thank you for another great comment. I share your sediments completely. As a newer physical media collector, particularly of boutique labels, A LOT of what I watch are blind watches. And I love doing so. This just truly caught me off guard, but it was intended to do what it did…especially for its time. So I completely get that it has its place…and as much as I hate it for what it is…I can also appreciate it as well for its purpose.

@@ungraduatedmedia That kind of nuanced reflection is exactly what we need more of in this hobby, and in this world. There are also films that I personally dislike or don't enjoy, but I recognize their cultural or historical value or artistic craftsmanship, likewise there are also movies that I know don't qualify as "good movies" but I love and enjoy them. @@beyondsourgrounds5602 I M a big time thinking and introspection type individual. Mix that with a love of movies and this is what you get 😉 I am loving it…and the rabbit holes go deep! Bought a lot of Vinegar Syndrome. I went all in on them last year and amassed about 75% of their catalog. Clearly, buying that much that fast leaves me a long run to catch up to the finish line in watching them all. But I’m making my way through. Outside of them I’m digging Umbrella right now and Second Sight. Obviously Arrow Video. Radiance Films is another label that I own every release of. Nearly every film is a new discovery for me and I love what Fran and his team is doing there. There are quite a few others I’m sprinkling in, but the world of physical media is far more vast than I imagined. I was mostly a “mainstream movie” guy for the longest, but I’ve really grown to appreciate the art of creative story telling, even at a lower budget level. So much good stuff out there and I’d say 80% of what I’m watching these days are blind buys.

Like you, I knew nothing of the film and had not heard of it prior to your review. My suggestion would be for future reviews of controversial films to provide a clearer and slightly more detailed synopsis of the film, despite the shock and controversy. You can still talk about what the film contains, without going into gory detail. By the end of your review I still had no greater understanding about what the film was about.
@ungraduatedmedia
@ungraduatedmedia 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your POV on the review - to be fair, it’s an honest point. But also from my perspective, I simply didn’t want to get too deep into it. It’s about slavery and often it “pokes fun” at the topic. It makes fun of another race of individuals all in sort of a “carefree” and very degrading fashion. Which was the point of the film to try and show the world at the time how horrible it all was. But it’s not done in a respectful or good way. The film comes off like “a joke” and it’s obviously no joking matter. And honestly, I just didn’t want to get into the dehumanizing of all of it as a matter of how the film “pokes fun” at the topic. But thank you for your feedback. Usually I get into the topic and overview quite well - this one was way harder for me to get into the details because it wasn’t fiction, it was very real unfortunately. If you do watch it - you’ll know exactly what I mean.

It also has social commentary about journalistic integrity and colonialism/imperialism and they also try making a message about race. It’s nowhere as disturbing as goodbye Uncle Tom tho. Also - I’m not triggered by anything in life…at least I try not to be as I’ve done a lot of “inner work” on ego. I was not worried about offending someone. It was just truly hard for me to talk about from “my seat at the table” and from a completely different time than when all this went down. Not just the civil war but the continued fight for equality during the 60’s and 70’s. I wasnt born until 1980. So my perspective is very limited and I said what I wanted and felt comfortable saying about it. Hopefully that can be understood. I have zero guilt for what I didn’t contribute to. But I also recognize how awful it is. Today or back then. My guilt, that I feel, is for humanity…we should be better. That was what I was trying to convey. I don’t know if you’ve seen the film, but if you have then you’ll know exactly where I’m coming from. This film goes well beyond slavery as it “makes fun” of another race.
