Google Ads Custom Parameters give advertisers more flexibility in URL tracking by allowing us to create our own dynamic tags and assign values at all levels within our accounts. In this video we'll show you where to find the custom parameters and show a couple examples of how to set them up.

Thanks for great video. I have a question about tracking part of these customer parameters in ga4. How can we see the results of these custom parameters in ga4? I guess we need to create custom dimensions.

What would the ValueTrack parameter in the template be if I want to track clicks on an Ad with a specific headline?

Hi there! thanks for this. I have a quick question, when you were explaining the different kind of keywords you might have (6:27) brand, non-brand, product specific, etc. can you show an example of how to set all those different values for the parameter?

Sure! So the video shows me adding only "brand", so you would do that for your brand terms. But for the others, you'll keep the parameter the same, but change the value from "brand" to be whatever you want: "non-brand", "product", or any other grouping you would want to segment by. Hi Thanks a lot for sharing. However I can’t see the campaign url options in my campaigns. It just doesn’t exist. Does anyone know why?

Hi Paul, that's interesting. I've never come across this not showing up before. It could be hidden under Advanced Settings or you might need to reach out to Google Support to find out why it's not showing up. Hope it gets sorted out!

If I use a tracking template at the ad group level and the campaign level do they stack up? Or does the ad group level overwrite what is at the campaign level? Thanks! Great video :)

Hi Donald, the tracking template will be overwritten at the lowest level in the account. So if you have an ad group level and campaign level tracking template, Google with use the Ad Group level. Thanks!

Hi, great video, I've one doubt- can I set all the parameters at only one level like- campaign or account level. E.g. parameters like- campaign, keyword, Device, adgroup, ad etc Thank you 💗

Hi Zankar, you will have to set all custom parameters at the appropriate level (i.e. campaign name at the campaign level, keyword at the keyword level, etc.) but you can create 1 account level dynamic tracking template that will capture all custom parameters, no matter what level they're from. Great video and helped me out alot, many thanks to you. But i have a doubt, can i turn on auto tagging with custom parameter? If so what will be the consequences? Please help me out here.

Hi Kartik, you absolutely can turn on autotagging with custom parameters. Google autotagging only applies the gclid to the URL. It doesn't append utm parameters. So you can check the box for autotagging, then utilize the tracking template to place the utm parameters you want to use to capture the custom parameters you've set up. Hope that helps!

I wish I knew how to delete or disable url tracking. I am confused by this and cannot save my campaign that I worked on for 1 hour.

Thanks for this video. Why is there no possibility to get the Campaign Name or Adgroup Name and so on? We basically just can get the IDs...but this is a horrible way to get data into Google Analytics or Adobe Analytics. You can't see as an Data Analytist what exact Ad this is without loging into Google Adwords and copying the exact ID and search for it. Is there a way where it don't need to be copied and pasted into G Ads manually?

I completely agree with you that IDs are a sub-optimal way to get data into any analytics platform. I'm not sure why they haven't come up with ValueTrack parameters that are the names and not the IDs, but it's always been this way. For now, the best option is to use the custom parameters and adjust them manually. Hopefully one day they'll give us a better option.

Hi there, you should be able to do this fairly simply by adding the {placement} or {network} valuetrack parameters to your tracking template. Just place those texts in the tracking with any other parameter you need. Here's a help article that might help a bit. support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6305348

Hello Jessica. Yes you can. Just understand the parameters can't be applied historically. They will only work from the day you implement them and then ongoing afterwards.

Hi Jesus, the custom parameters will show up just as any other value would and will be part of any standard report if you're using them for the main 5 UTM parameter fields: source, medium, campaign, term, and content. If you're using them for a custom variable, then they'll show up just like any other custom hard coded variable you're already using.

@@PaidMediaPros Can you please elaborate on this? So say I have a custom variable {_promooffer}=30 in my tracking template. (Question 1) Do I have to create a custom dimension in Google Analytics called promooffer? (Question 2) Also, I just don't see how Google Analytics will record this directly just from the 30 appearing in the URL. It is more likely I have to use Google Tag Manager to pass the value of a variable into the custom dimension? Thank you.

Question based on your video. I haven't tested, but maybe someone already knows. At 6:34 where you added keyword level custom parameter... IF {_keywordtype} is added to the tracking template at Account level. But I did not set or did not add the _keywordtype customer parameter in the keyword.... Will the final lp link show the parameter that is blank or will it not add that parameter to the link? Basically.. is it? lp/?Search&_keyword=& OR lp/?Search& Anyone tested this?

it is not step by step guide on how to do it. It would help more to show an example for each level and go from the begin to the end of the set up and also show the results in google analytics

Guys I'd just use auto-tagging... it's much better considering what it does for you and how long it takes to set it up

Hi Tomas, thanks for the thought here. Auto-tagging is a great option, but it's not a complete solution. There are times where tracking needs to be customized to fit in with CRMs, custom reporting, and other platforms outside of Google Analytics that auto-tagging won't support. Auto-tagging might fit all your needs, but there are others out there who need more tracking that auto-tagging can provide. Thanks!

Sorry, but it didn't work. I followed your exact directions and Google said I have illegal characters and I need to add the stupid {lpurl}. that the tracking must reference your final URL??? what??? I HATE THIS. I have no idea why they made this so freeken complicated.
