Google just announced the new 2020 Nest Thermostat, and you may be wondering, "Should I Buy?" At a $130 price tag, and a radically new design Google's new 2020 Nest Thermostat is tempting, however it is missing a few features from previous models like the 3rd Generation Nest Learning Smart Thermostat and the Nest Smart Thermostat E. Watch this video to learn about the new features on the Nest Thermostat 2020, and the features that are missing. These will be available starting on October 30th according to the Amazon store page for this product. It is worth noting that your energy company may give you up to a $75 rebate on this product if you look at the list on the Google Store Page.
Comparing the new Nest Thermostat vs 3rd Generation Nest Learning Smart Thermostat vs Nest Smart Thermostat E reveals that the following features have been removed:
No Smart Learning capabilities, must set schedules and routines instead
No Nest App, must be used through the Google Home app
No rotating dial, replaced with a touch sensitive strip
Not compatible with remote Nest Temperature Sensors
No built in battery, replaced with 2 AAA batteries
Features that are available on the new Nest Thermostat are:
Mirrored screen with display underneath
Available in white, dark gray, light pink and light green
Matching color trim kits available for $15
Google Soli will turn the display on when you are standing near it
Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa compatibility
Can set temperature while away from home and set schedules for cooling and heating when away from house
Will report HVAC problems, and give reminders to change air filters
Can supposedly save 10-15% on energy costs per year
Works with 85% of home HVAC systems

I bought mine at Costco. Good deal but the battery was so low, It wouldn’t let me set it up. I had to call their tech who said it needed to be updated with the latest upgrade and charged for 1 hour. After that, it was fine but it took an hour to figure that out.

is there a "temperature hold" for this one??? the $250 one does not have a Temp Hold, that is extremely necessary while living in Arizona, cant have temp cycles while +110 outside

Just purchased today. There is a hold. However, it asks to hold for how long - assuming its holding until the next interval in schedule occurs. There's not an option to just 'hold' until you change temp manually.

You just saved me some headache. I pre-ordered the new nest thermostat thinking its an amazing deal, half price of the 3rd gen. Then I saw your vid, ran a compatibility check, and with my RH and W1 wires (in a new house), this thermostat is not compatible without hiring a pro to install a common wire. Thanks much man.

Most people move the g(green fan control) to the c spot so they don’t need a pro to install there are tens of videos about this

You could also get a C-wire adapter, like the one included with Wyze Thermostat.

End of the day it's a thermostat that I don't want to spend more than a minute of my day checking. I'm ok with the price

I bought a 2020 model and it's impossible to control the temperature, every roomate wants different temperatures ALL the FRICKING time... they walk into it and change it from 68 to heat it up to 72 in the middle of the night, some burn in their room while others just get cozy, ALL I wanted was to set 69F from 9pm to 8am. But there's no PIN lock option, so be aware...

From what I see online they came out in 2017. I agree though, Google isn't great at supporting products long term.

Can your heating still work manually if you turn the nest /WiFi off??

Yes, if your WiFi network loses connection or goes down entirely, the thermostat should still operate as normal, just without the smart functionality of course.

@@noxious_nights I think this is one of the pros of the learning gen 3 model. alot of functionality can be done right on the unit where the 2020 model requires things like scheduling and such to be done on the app. But both will still function without wifi.

Yes! You'll still be able to control things manually from the thermostat, however the smart functionality obviously doesn't work without WiFi.

@@noxious_nights alot of things you can't though like scheduling which has to be done remotely on app, but can be done directly on the learning gen 3 unit for example.

many peoples have reported problems without the c wire even though the compatibility test tells them its ok without it. Then they go to install it and it it doesn't have enough power to run. I'd be fuming. There is also some issue with these units getting error codes claiming its not detecting wires, like G and W wires, even though it functions fine. And google says to ignore them. bonkers...

No, it connects to the Internet for smart functions via a WiFi network.

I disagree with you! Lets be real majority of people don't need all of those useless features which only bump up the price. And the rotating wheel is a bit 2010 if you ask me.

I disagree with the rotating wheel, having owned the 3rd gen thermostat I really like the tactile feel of spinning the dial... Analogue buttons still have a place and how neat implemented then on the 3rd gen was perfect

I hate all the new features, I don't need to see my face in a mirror when I adjust the thermostat.... I want a real dial I hate touch dials.....I don't want the thermostat watching me and turning on and off, I'd just like it to show the temperature even from across the room. That said I'm getting one of these after a substantial discount from my power company and the 2020 was all they offered, so I'm in. I would just like to know amongst the colors ("charcoal", "fog", "snow"), if there's any difference in contrast and readability. Does anybody know? Some of the pictures online make it look like the white is dimmer than the others... not being able to see a reflective screen could be a problem

The thing sucks, I just put it in & the old digital stat worked much better, No support & no instructions for this new one. I may return it & go back to my old stat

The instructions are in the app. Have to select add new device, select thermostat, then it'll guide you through it. No paper instructions.

@@samuelmendez7253 I think it's a decent thermostat. I just wish it had a lock feature to lock the set temp - not holding the temp. But, to lock it so others in your home can't adjust. Also, wish you could manually ontril the brightness instead of auto bright. Smh. Oh. Also, wish you could just 'hold' the temp until you decide to change it again instead of just having to hold for an amount of time that you set.
