I personally can do with the basic thermostats that our house came with. However this weekend we accidentally broke ours sooooo while on the hunt to buy a replacement we really stopped and considered what we want from a new thermostats. For example my room has 4 vents and my sisters only has one. That means my room is either always too cold or too hot because for her it runs the opposite way around. Also in the living room upstairs I have all my exotic plants that I have been struggling with lately because everyone else is too hot so they crank up the ac so its 60 or so but those plants have to be at a constant 70. Well I was pleasantly surprise to find that there is a thermostat that can regulate each rooms temperature individually. Also I hate having the heater on during the winter, but everyone else runs too cold and set it at flipping 75-85 which means I wake up drenched. This thermostats sound like I would be able to control it directly with my phone without having to do my usual 2 am sprint across the house to lower the heat. This is on the off chance the sensors are a flop. So sure it’s not really a necessity but I like paying for comfort if life allows it.

I’ve owned both. The plastic Google version is jenkie. The original Nest thermo is the way to go, in my opinion. The user interface is superior and so is the original Nest app.

Good information, thank you for sharing. The one additional question is: from an 'energy savings' standpoint, are both equivalent? That was a big selling point of the nest thermostats, I am wondering if this 'budget' versions also downgrades that particular quality?

People keep saying that the new one looks cheaper, but I agree with you - the new one simply looks like a more modern, minimalist version of luxury. It's like the difference between a traditional Rolls Royce interior and a modern S Class interior. Different design philosophies

One function I am wanting in my first Smart thermostat is complete schedule programming for the fan. With either of these thermostats - can you program the fan to run all night like 10pm - 6am regardless if the Heat/AC is needed…. And also then just go to Automatic through the day - meaning it comes on only when the Heat/AC needs to run!? I like the fan on to move air while we sleep for the noise and air movement - but do not want to waste electricity when we are not home through the day. Also with the fan - is there a “recycle” type setting - where the fan would come on periodically to move air through the house - but would not require the fan to just be on all day/schedule long? The rest of the programming I’m sure works fine - but I want to know I can program just the fan completely!? TIA!

I 'downgraded' from the Learning Thermostat to this new Thermostat. Installation was just as easy. Use of it remains to be seen. I hardly touch the physical thermostat, I normally do adjustments through the app or through the Nest Hub or Alexa app. I didn't realize however, that the Termostat would not be available through the Nest app and now have to go through the Google Home app. Little disappointed in that because my Nest Cameras and Protect devices are still on the Nest App. Oh well lessons learned. As far as the new Thermostat, I definitely like the cleaner look of it. I've had the Learning Thermostat since it came out and felt I needed/wanted an upgrade.

Great video man.. I'm definitely more informed now. How do the sensors work? Can you adjust the temperatures? I prefer my master bedroom to be warmer than my fam likes the rest of the house to be. Thanks..
@SteveDOES
@SteveDOES 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. As for the sensors, you place them in rooms throughout the house. So if the thermostat is in the hallway and you have it set to 78, it will turn off the heat when the hallway gets to 78. Even if your bedroom is still 74. If you have a sensor in your bedroom you can have your thermostat base it's on/off times from that sensor instead of the sensor in the thermostat. So for example, if you set your thermostat to 78, using the bedroom sensor, the heater will stay on until your room hits that temp. Your hallway might now be 82 but the room that you want to be 78 now will be. Hope that makes sense. :)
@bigmike7925

@@SteveDOES it makes sense Bro.. I'm guessing that I might be forced to get the more expensive thermostat then. I have a single story house and the thermostats are about 20 feet apart. The one for the master bedroom will not shut off when the set heat temp is reached.. it gets stuck on Duncan Hines hot!! 😳 I was looking for a solution so that my bedroom temp would be where I want it and not controlled by my hallway ambient temp..

You failed to highlight the most important difference which is that the new thermostat doesn't use AI/ML to learn your patterns and optimize you're temperature schedule/profile. Aside from aesthetics and integration into the Google Home app, as far as I can tell, the new thermostat doesn't have any more intelligence than other programmable thermostats on the market. At the end of the day, you still manually set up your own temperature schedule/profile, it's just that you do it through the Google Home app. Of course, you can control the temp remotely with the app, but does this really constitute a "smart thermostat?"
@SteveDOES
@SteveDOES 3 жыл бұрын
You’re right, it’s in my notes but didn’t make it in the video. :/ I wasn’t a fan of it learning my patterns. I kept getting mad at my wife to adjusting the thermostat and she said she never touched it. I found it kept adjusting to temps that I didn’t want. Guess I just wasn’t used to my thermostat “adjusting” the temp 30 minutes after I manually changed it. Haha

Got a Nest as a gift last month. It does not seem to like my 1989 furnace. I have it set at 69 from 10pm to 3 am and then move to 73 at 3am so that when we get up for work, early, there is heat in the house. THere are days that the Nest Learning does not follow the schedule and the house is cold even up to 7 am. So then I move the app to a degree higher and still the furnace does not come on. I am very frustrated. The old thermostat started the furnace immediately if moved up.

Do you have to use the schedule? I find them super annoying, and would much rather set a heat and cool temp, and if I need to change it when I go out of town, etc, I can just turn it up or down as needed. Otherwise, seems like it's a good deal.

The Nest Learning has a pretty shell but it hardly stacks up as reliable. Mine died in under a year and only received the run around from Google. Save your money.

Better yet, is there instructions anywhere how to use the Nest thermostat? Having to constantly search is frustrating. Anyone chime in please.

Does it work with Google Nest hub? 🤔

I have both. The Learning Thermostat is not worth the extra cost. The only feature it has is rechargeable batteries, the rest are features I don't use or care about.
