Warning - Use of an unofficial ROM to backup your photos is done at your own risk, it's best to use an old second hand Pixel device.
Due to this, I won't be able to help you find a particular ROM that might work, other than Pixel devices listed below

Let me get this straight. You're using the Pixel 3A Unlimited Backup for photos and videos feature to pass to Pixel 8 Pro? If so which of these methods did you go with?

Hi there! Excellent video, does this work with other camera files? And also, if im doing it manually, which would be the folder i should be pasting the pictures in? Thank you!!

Yep, can manually drop DSLR photos in if you want The normal photos folder is easiest, but you can really drop them anywhere, as long as you tell photos to backup that folder

Hi, I am trying to set up foldersync between one drive and a google pixel 1. It is not allowing me to select a one drive folder as my remote folder and says "bad request." Are you able to help me resolve this? Thanks so much :)

Unfortunately I'm unsure I can't see anything when I do a quick Google, and trying to add my own OneDrive looks to be added without issue. Can only suggest trying something else, different settings, or reinstall

Does the Google Pixel 5a have the same Lifetime Quality Space Saver storage privileges as the Google Pixel 5?

Unfortunately the 5a was the first device to not have the free Photos storage perk You would need a 5 or earlier

Thanks for this! Though what about pics from previously used phones on the Google photos cloud that still count against the limited storage? Can one simply downloaded them and re-uploaded them from the pixel? What's the best workflow for that? Any issues with them appearing in different order/current date or such? Thanks a lot!

Yep, this does work, when I did this: 1- Download media 2- Delete from Google Photos 3- Drop the media into the Pixels camera/upload folder I just did it with a USB stick, may need to do it in groups if you have heaps. It shouldn't appear in different orders, unless you have manually changed timestamps and other meta info, which would need to be changed again. Otherwise all the original meta tags should get picked up fine

I have a USB C thumb drive which wasn't too bad, some older devices can be a pain though. Most likely easiest to just: -Downloaded photos on a PC -Connect the Pixel to the PC, then drag and drop the photos into the correct folder

@@FilthyCasualTech Took a moment of back and fourth, but got it to work eventually. What I'm a little concerned now is the battery of the pixel - not being the newest anymore - and constantly leaving it plugged in is not so great either. There's apparently a way with rooted phones to power them direclty from AC, leaving the battery out of the equation - haven't fully figured how to do that though. You don't happen to have an idea - or something like that coming up for a follow up video?

Glad you got it working! No current plans for a follow-up, but you could try using the 'charge control' app. It's root only, but looks like it can restrict battery charge, so you can keep it at 80% instead of 100 which should help

Hello, I do have a quesiton. What would happen if my main phone has 130+ GBs of raw footage and photos and my backup phone would only have 32GBs? How do I efficiently and properly backup all of my photos with original quality through my backup phone without duplicates?

I would just drag and drop them to the pixel in batches > backup > then delete Only setup the auto backup process once things are all caught up and deleted

I tried this strategy for a while, but our Pixel phone has a limited storage spaces of 100GB. Clearing up space for pixels can lead to confusion about which photos have already been backed up and which have not.

Cleanup should only delete files which have been backed up - yet to run into a problem myself I would say my only issue with the Folder sync method is it can take up your cloud storage space too, if you don't clean up frequently

3:00 Hi! Sorry but I have a question in this part. I've done everything as you mentioned with FolderSync but I realized that, even though the pictures backed up successfully on google photos on my backup pixel, the original pictures/videos are still uploaded on my google drive folder I created and I had to manually delete them. Is there a way for them to automatically delete after they are backed up? I also did the 'free up space' thing (and was confused because the option to free up space on google photos is available on both devices, should I free up space on both or just my main phone? Thanks! Also some options are slightly different on FolderSync, I guess they updated the app since you made the video. I'm not sure if maybe I missed something (for instance the sync subfolders and hidden files options don't show up to me).

If you set it up the same way I did, you should be able to free up space on your main device, and it should flow into the Drive folder and be deleted there (drive takes 30 days to actually delete), then into the backup device where it should be deleted. You don't have to free up space manually though - with the Google Files app, you can select 'Smart Storage' which will delete backed up media after 60 days

I'm confused, because i saw pixel 7 pro (i took it as unlimited backup device) so i don't know which is your main device pixel 7 pro or backup device (i don't know if you have ROM on named Backup device)... I was using syncthing but i don't know how enable Syncdelete on syncthing so can you make video on that how to enable Syncdelete on syncthing. I've (one device - rooted Samsung galaxy S8 (not a ROM just Tool for Gphotos)) only unlimited storage for Google photos using "pixelify Gphotos, magiskroot, Lsposed" (at home always on charging) And My Main daily device Samsung galaxy S10 (which i carry with myself every day) i think foldersync would be good because it's has sync delete function but is it possible to 'auto'backup from Gdrive to Gphotos, i don't understand how to setup, can you make detailed tutorial?

The Pixel 7 Pro is the main device, the OnePlus 7TPro is the backup with a ROM I didn't include the Syncthing deletion steps as I couldn't get Syncthing to work properly on my device, so unfortunately you're best googling that As for Folder Sync, the setup is included in this video. Clearing space on your main device will remove it from Google Drive (gets put in the trash then removed after 30 days) The Google Files app has a smart storage option you can use which will delete media automatically after 60 days if you don't want to perform manual cleanups

Hey Thanks! I'm using Foldersync app and I've set-up everything as exact shown in the video, but it is not deleting files after they're Backed up to GDrive (from Main Device) or when are down downloaded to (Backup Device) from the GDrive. Could you please help?

You'll need to run a cleanup in Google Photos on the main device, or turn on smart storage in the Google Files app It won't reclaim your Google Drive space for a while though, as they just get sent to the bin, then deleted 30 days later

The option gives the app the ability to delete So when you do a cleanup on your main device, it's able to flow through and delete the same files off your Google Drive, and then follow onto your backup device - it can just take a little while

Yep, same process As long as your photos get to the Pixel, it'll be all good

I setup the foldersync method and did a manual sync to test the file transfer but the deletion didn't occur....would you happen to know why the images are still in the drive folder?

With these settings, it's been deleting as I delete them from my main device. But... The way Drive deletes files is it just puts a .trashed name in front of them - you'll see them if you go to the bin in Drive It then takes 30 days for the files to actually be deleted, unless you do it manually

@@FilthyCasualTech yeah I saw that too with the ".trashed" file name. I thought it had to do with permissions in Drive that it had restricted any deletions from taking place. Thanks for the response and thanks for the informative tutorial.

With my current setup, I would expect if you deleted them from Drive but not the main device, the sync would simply restore them to Drive again. There is an option in advanced called 'Only resync source files if modified (ignore target deletion)' You could give that a try

@@FilthyCasualTech I tried all the settings from your youtube video. All my photos from Pixel 7 successfully got uploaded into google drive. However, only some of the photos got downloaded from drive into my Pixel 3. Any idea why that could be?

It lets it replicate your deletions too So when you delete from the main device, it can flow to the drive, and then to the backup device

Can i only view the uploaded photos on pixel 1? I wouldn't be able to view them on google photo on my laptop? Is thay correct? Can i use my current google accoint to set up? Or do i need a separate new account? Also if the phone dies, i lose all the pics and vids? Never able to recover those again?

Once photos are backed up, you can view them from Google Photos on any device. As long as the backup is done properly, it should act no differently than the usual backup.

Can I use download pics and vids from my galaxy phone to my laptop, then download those to pixel 1 from laptop, then upload to google photo? All transfers using usb c cablr? Would those achieve the same result? Uploaded to google photos without taking any storage?

Yep, using Pixel 5 myself too The 2021 date would be for full quality backups - it retains High Quality/Storage Saver for life

Google Drive for desktop could work, as it would sync a folder on your desktop with a Drive folder, then foldersync could just pick it up from there as normal

You dont need all this. Either a custom ROM with internal spoofing (just like you mentionned) or a Magisk module that spoofs GPhotos to a Pixel 1.

Moved to folder sync, like it so far. Though - does it matter how to then free up space in the devices after the upload? I suppose one should go through Google photos free up space. Though on the sender or pixel or either way? Thanks!

I run the 'free up space' on my main device every now and then. This filters though into the Drive location, and then onto the backup device Takes 30 days to reclaim the space on Drive though, as it just sits in the bin for a while

Hmm, just deleted some MB, although it should have been several GB. So I'm seeing the pictures with the cloud icon, indicating they're uploaded, but they're remaining on the device. On the pixel it would indeed free up much more. Did you encounter that as well? Just uploaded yesterday though.

Would give it time, depending how you run it, the Pixel can also just leave things in the bin
