As an avid backpacker and photographer, I find myself out in the elements for days at a time. With the form factor and water resistance of this new Session (others had it too, sure but not without a case), it's allowed me to pack it in with me and I've done some pretty clever things with it so far. It's not all about FPS and ultimate video quality. For some, it's good enough having 1080p 60fps. Great video, thanks for the upload and thoughts!

Greetings "RevZilla," I want to thank you for this excellent and informative video about the GoPro Hero4 Session Review. It is so nice to see a quality made video by someone who not only knows how to shoot and film video, and one who actually offers valuable, important and honest critique about a product. I am a videographer of a sort and have done videography film work on a semiprofessional basis. I've watched several videos online about the "GoPro Session" and have not been too keen on the opinions offered. Most of them were very personally biased with strongly worded opinions that bordered on obsessively negative and crude. Your commentary input and information is honest, straightforward and clean. You offered information about the abilities, the pros and the cons and gave valuable info to any perspective viewer about the Hero4 Session by GoPro. Even though the Session camera is not the highest resolution camera on the market, the imagery is actually very good. It is clean, well saturated, but not overly saturated as is the case with some cameras. For the average film maker/videographer, this camera is more than adequate. yes, the dynamic range is somewhat lacking, but the imagery is very clean, though slightly out of focus and not as sharp as it could be. Furthermore, this little camera shoots and offers broadcast quality footage that is perfectly acceptable in the TV Broadcast world. For the price I think it's a pretty good camera. My wife just bought and gave me a Hero4 Session GoPro for Christmas. This is my very first gopro camera. However, I own and use a Canon GL2 camcorder, an older "Prosumer" camera that is actually a "3CCD" unit with amazing color resolution. As good as the old unit is, the little gopro is actually outshining this old camcorder of mine, which will be retired soon enough. I am still on the learning curb with the Hero4 Session and am exploring, studying and getting to know this unit. I am amazed that something so small can produce remarkable videos and still images. However based on research, the "Hero4, and all the GoPro units are actually employing and using existing technology that was originally developed for the wireless smartphone technology. At their core, the cameras in a gopro and a smartphone are essentially and nearly identical. The underlying and most notable differences are how the cameras are used, but the basic architecture of the 2 cameras are essentially the same. Both smart phone cameras and the gopro shoot stunningly beautiful images and the videos are nothing short of amazing. I am truly amazed at how far video and camera technology has come in such a short period of time. I still remember when personal computers didn't even exist, now look where we are. I am excited to have my Hero4 session camera and am looking forward to using it and exploring what I can and can't do with it. Although it does have its drawbacks, such as a one hour limit for filming, I see the potentials of my new camera. again, thank you for this very well made and informative video review of my new camera.

The video quality is about the same. You only lose night mode and 4K on the session since its smaller than the hero 4 silver. Depending on where I'm at, I'll use either the hero 4 silver or session. The session is a perfect vlogging camera. I also have an easier time mounting the hero 4 session in places that normal GoPros can't go.

The little white thing that no one knows what to do with them are not only intended to lock the camera, but its main purpose is anti-vibration. It reduces the vibration of both video and sound.

I have this camera, and if you use it as a dashcam like I do, there's one major drawback: What they call "looping mode" doesn't actually loop at all if you stop recording even once. E.g.; if you set the segment rate to 5 min and record 15 min (3 5 min. files), then stop recording, those 3 files will not be written over if in the next session(s) you run out of SD space. Not only that, on the next session(s) no looping will actually happen. It only loops (by deleting the oldest file), at all, if you run out of SD space during ONE continuous session. So, they use a really creative and unique - read, BS - definition of "looping". As a dashcam it doesn't really work. You have to delete the whole SD on a regular basis. I got on their forum and brought this up, and they explained to me that it's designed this way because "it's designed for use as an action cam", which makes no sense to me. Every other "action cam" out there has a true looping mode that loops no matter what, through power cycles, any number of takes. Even the cheapest $20 eBay gopro knockoffs. It's especially nonsensical of them IMO, because all they'd have to do is add a simple setting to change this behavior. Call it 'dashcam mode'. Whatever. It's a simple software change, not hardware at all. So instead I'm having to look into gopro firmware hacking to add the feature myself. Thank you Redditors on r/goprohack.

I have a love hate relationship with the GoPro Session. Love the form factor, all in one water proof housing, quick rotation system and the new mounts. That mount system is well over due for a refresh. A $250 entry price point would have been perfect. Awesome review dude!

I like this unit, and if I didn't have a Hero3, I probably would buy one with the Bluetooth mic. However, I have stereo mic inside my helmet and a Bluetooth Transmitter and Receiver to connect the bike mounted camera. I don't like helmet mount videos bouncing around, and I've removed all but one. The point is there are multiple ways of doing this, and I like the small Hero4 Session for general use.

As a motovlogger I would certainly like the smaller design but I worry about the ability to record audio. I suppose I will just have to try it out and if nothing else use it for a bike mounted camera. I have one and I've been mainly using it as a "dash cam". The wind noise cancels out engine noise in vids but I haven't tried putting a piece of electrical tape over the mic holes. I find it very difficult to transfer vids to my computer with the free GoPro app. When I click import media, it opens the files explorer, or it's just not accessible - like the button is not highlit. . insert the sd card directly into your computer because it takes forever if you use the usb cable. (Windows 10) but then it wants to put them in Windows Media, and not the GoPro app. The Doid RC app is cool, but it takes 6-7 tries to connect to the camera before anything happens, and the WiFi seems very weak and disconnects sometimes.Vibration? Also, how the hell do I turn the damn thing off. The red button shuts it down, but the LED keeps blinking 24/7 and when I go to use it again the battery is dead. I bought an external battery because at high def, and with connectivity, the camera battery will only last a little over an hour.

Like anything, practice makes perfect. The more you practice and play around with shooting video, the better one can get. Often, people just tighten the mount screws by hand. Using an actual screwdriver to get the mounts a bit tighter can reduce vibration. We also play around with mounting locations to see what works best. With any camera, you would need to do the same. -DrewZilla

Great review man. I just got a bike, learning to ride and all that, and I'm looking for a action cam to stick to the tank so I can record my rides. I've seen so many "Gopro session is shit" reviews, but they never talk about the stuff you mention - it's like a cirklejerk where they all end up agreeing that "Yea you should get a RED to record all your stuff." which is completely ridiculous. Anyway, seeing as this is the cheapest option right now I think I'm gonna go with one. Great channel, great reviews.

I have two concerns. My main camera is a hero4 silver. I use a few different cams for secondary locations. I am considering replacing them with sessions. Pro's would be the lower profile and ability for everything to run off the same remote. These would be for the rear facing and side facing cams, with the 4 silver remaining the main forward facing cam. My concerns are the battery and the lense cover. I typically run the bike cams off 12v power when I am on an all day ride (I do a lot of touring). I assume you would have to disassemble the door to keep it plugged in to power, also risking the non-replacable battery by keeping it plugged in. Replacing that lense cover seems more expensive than a cheap skeleton case for a hero 3 or 4. I have had rocks kick up and smack my cameras fairly regularly. I am really tempted, though. The form factor is really attracting me and being able to sync all my bike cams to a single remote would be great. One question on settings. Can you set the session for simultaneous video and still shots like I can on my hero4?

This GoPro Hero4 Session does not have an external audio input. In the video, we had a Sena Bluetooth communicator connected via Bluetooth to a Sena GP10 GoPro Audio Back attached to a regular GoPro Hero4 Silver carried in a pocket, and that was used solely to record audio. We already had those devices, but most people don't, so for simple motovlogging, you might consider the Sena Prism Tube. If you already have a Bluetooth communicator, I recommend getting the regular Sena Prism (if you don't have a communicator, get the Sena 10R. If you want a communicator that also records helmet-mounted video, consider the all-in-one Sena 10C. This GoPro Hero4 Session does not have an external audio input. In the video, we had a Sena Bluetooth communicator connected via Bluetooth to a Sena GP10 GoPro Audio Back attached to a regular GoPro Hero4 Black (or Hero4 Silver) carried in a pocket, and that was used solely to record audio. We already had those devices, but most people don't, so for your application, I recommend getting the Bluetooth-capable Sena Prism Camera along with the Sena 10U Communicator for Schuberth C3/C3 Pro. Like the Schuberth SRC system, the Sena 10U is a specific fit for the C3 Pro, but the 10U is newer, more affordable, and more compatible with Sena's Prism camera and Sena's Bluetooth Audio Back for GoPro. I just got this camera for Christmas and I want to use it for motovlogging. Two things are killing me right now: 1. There is no way to hook up an external mic to the camera, so you have to use a separate setup to record in-helmet audio, and 2. This camera looks like it sticks out a ton compared to the other GoPros (when you look at it from the side-profile while it's chin-mounted to a helmet). It's definitely smaller than the others, but it's thicker-- something to consider if you're planning to chin-mount it on your helmet. Any ideas on the best way to record in-helmet audio since I can't attach a mic adapter to the Session?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 8 жыл бұрын
+William Opie Perhaps run a microphone from the helmet into a cell phone and use a voice-recording app or use a digital audio recorder. Then sync the audio and video by clapping in front of the camera. Line up the audio and the video clapping in post. -DrewZilla

I'm looking at this camera from a commuter stand point just as street protection. I don't particularly care about how high of a quality the picture is. What is the realistic expectation of battery life on the lowest quality settings? Also, can I set the camera to loop data so I it will overwrite the oldest data? Thanks!
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Ireland GoPro's longest battery life claim is 2 hours 5 minutes in 1080p30 fps resolution with WiFi off, and yes, there is a "Looping" mode. Hope this helps! -DrewZilla

i just bought a session 4 a couple of days ago, and recorded some video riding on the highway. the wind noise is crazy . so i,m thinking if you stick a little piece of tape over the front microphone, that would probably help cut down some of the noise. well i did just that, and now i will go out and try it. ill let you know if it works.

Hi I bought a GoPro session two days ago after watching many reviews, specifically yours. I also purchased a sandisk uhs-I red/gold sd card. I have the settings on the GoPro to 1080p 60fps. My video looks nothing like yours. It's not nearly as clear and it's very very choppy/laggy. What could be the issue? I tried it on my motorcycle and just walking around and it's bad both ways. I'm ready to return it.

That is correct, the Session is not for voice recording. In the video, we had a Sena Bluetooth communicator connected via Bluetooth to a Sena GP10 GoPro Audio Back attached to a regular GoPro Hero4 carried in a pocket, and that was used solely to record audio. We already had those devices, but most people don't, so for simple motovlogging, you might consider the Sena Prism Tube. If you already have a Bluetooth communicator, I recommend getting the regular Sena Prism (if you don't have a communicator, get the Sena SMH10R. If you don't have a communicator and just want to record helmet-mounted video, consider the all-in-one Sena 10C.
