The GoPro Karmas is quite possibly the most underutilized drone out there, and I wanted to make a video revisiting it in 2020 and show-off the video features the GoPro 7 can offer with this massive unmanned aircraft.

I've had my Karma for almost a year now and absolutely LOVE it. The only complaint I have is that the range is not quite as good as the modern DJIs in urban environments, but I do not feel comfortable flying farther than I can maintain a good line of sight anyway. Even though this is a relatively large drone, it's easy to loose it in the sky if you are not careful. Great video!

Yeah, that range. 2km....? pfhttt... If I get 500 meters glitch free I am lucky. In general I really enjoy the karma though

I finally was able to get my Karma Drone updated and back in the air today and the controls are definitely tighter and smoother with the update. Hoping to get some footage this week for my channel!

GoPro no longer carries the full drone on their website... Your best bet is to find a used drone now on eBay or Craigslist.

Iñaki Saez Fernandez I bought it when it first came out so I’ve had it a while. You can find them used because most people don’t want to deal with the restrictions.

Great job. I have been using the gopro karma drone for 4 years now. I still have the original. It has been a great solid unit to use. I use it for professional work. You should look up 'magnetic island race week 2019 highlights reel' their is some awesome aerial footage from my karma of yacht Racing. 🙂

The GoPro Hero 8 does not work with the karma drone. different input setup.

Looks awesome! I'm looking into getting one , would you recommend it? I have experience with DJI drones but I like how with the karma I can use 1 camera for all of my needs ,not a camera and then a camera drone. Or are they any other options like this ?

Hey Kyle, It's a great drone. And looking at the price point of 350-400ish, you really cant buy anything with that quality in that price range. I recommend it for that reason. It's not a good drone to travel with, as it is so large and heavy. If I was you, I would take some time to really compare side by side the Karma, and the Mavic mini. I know people who have similarly dropped large drone setups for the Mavic mini. I hope that helps, fly safe.

Kyle Tavarez affordably, yes. You’ll also end up getting (if you look) a better package deal with batteries and maybe props. GoPro still sells parts to the karma I’m under their “accessories” tab... you were able to buy a complete karma about 3 months ago from there, but, they have since sold out.

Thanks homie. It's all done from the controller. It might have been unclear because i brought the drone back every-time I changed the settings, but it is able to be done in flight.

Spencer Harris dude, I love gopro... and I also have one. But the 5 is straight poo compared the the 7. I haven’t played with an 8 yet, but from what I understand, it won’t work with the karma or gimbals

My research on this drone continues to show what seems a relatively short distance before video starts cutting out on the controller, I think you were saying just over 400 feet in the video. Would I expect to be able to reach out to longer distances with something like a Mavik Pro or other newer drone? Thanks!

True. My Mavic pro (on paper) can go up to 8 miles on a cell signal, and I personally have never experienced loss of visual with my Mavic Pro.

I still use both, I find the Karma has less compression artifacts (when shooting with the GoPro7) than the Mavic does overall. Range on Mavic is a lot better & less choppy. When it comes to the Karma, I still have anxiety flying it because of their past. It's unfortunate, but true. Regardless, fly safe & thanks for the comment. 🤙

TDR Drones yea, I’m pretty sure on the 8 that GoPro moved the necessary inputs under the removable hatch to the other side. I have yet to get my hands on an 8 to verify, but the 7 (IMHO) is more than enough camera.

This is a great drone. Keep the line of sight. I dont know why people want to fly it all far away in reality you dont want to do that jot if you are flying responsibly anyway. It is extremely stable in high wind. One of the only drones that comes with a seperate controller. Battery life sucks but you can find used batteries on fbook market place from people who have crashed or no longer fly because of its age. I usually film in 4k 60 and correct the footage in post for that linear look. When this came out it was one of the best cameras on a drone being that it was a go pro. Still hard to find a drone that can do what this one does at its price point. My only regret is that I hought it new when it retailed at $1000 only to have them discontinue the product. It would be great to see them come out with an updated gimble arm so that you can update the camera in the future but that isnt likely. Great drone still in 2020.

Very, very true. Funny enough, when I first bought the drone 3 years back, I was so turned off by the size I never really gave it a chance. Now, i'd like to think myself a little wiser and it has slowly become one of my favorite pieces of aerial equipment. Appreciate the comment, fly safe. ✌️

I haven't heard about anything, and I wouldn't hold your breath... i'm pretty sure GoPro is out of the drone game for the long-run now.... ..and as of now, there are no mounts to use the newer (8 & 9) on the karma. ;/

I've got gopro hero 7 and i have a possibilty to buy karma without camera and karma grip for 380$ is it worth it?

Hm... you'l have to ask yourself is it worth having a drone for about $500 invested. You can guy the grip (and camera enclosure) for $99. I think it's a great piece of equipment that gives footage a super unique look/feel, but it's obviously not the easiest piece of gear to travel with. Hope that helps.

I haven't ever used the Mavic Mini, but I have plenty of friends that have dropped other prosumer drones and use it as their main drone. I have nothing poor to say about it, truth is, i would probably prefer it over the Karma, based purely on the size. Hope that helps.

i now have zino pro.. karma with gp5b and mavic mini. if i could have one based on all aspects of drone flying it would be the karma. the smaller the more wacky they are..

You're looking at $300-$400 to buy the Karma. But, the GoPro Hero 9 will not work with this drone, neither will the 8. The GoPro 7 was the last camera to be compatible with the Karma harness sytem.

Hi Tom, I don’t suppose you or ANYONE can help? I accidentally crashed my karma drone it’s coming up on the handset “please fully extend arms” I can’t tell visually which arm possibly is broken can you give me some guidance is there a way to tell which arm is broken? Last thing I want to do is have to buy each arm individually to try then realise it was the wrong arm, thanks in advance to anybody who could help😀

Hey there, I wish I knew more about the internal mechanism that triggers arm recognition, unfortunately, i do not.... it might be worth going through all the motions of taking the drone apart to see if there is something physically wrong with the arm connectors? Depends on what you can buy it for,... i have seen a few units (without a camera) selling for 200-250 and that is a GREAT BUY! Know you will only be using go-pros 4-7.... and I recommend using a 7 if you go that route. It's the best preforming camera that is compatible with this drone.

Was tasked at trying to get one of these going for work. Never have I seen a drone product so plagued with technical issues and problems. Not only discontinued, but to this day countless unsolved technical requests on message boards, etc. Glad it works for a handful of people, but most should stay away from the Karma, even at a discount.

@@TomDeCicco would be nice if thousands of the drones weren't bricked and grounded by GoPro with a bad update. As of November 2020 it's only a matter of time before yours is bricked if it isn't already when you pull it out of the closet.

Congrats on the purchase. 🎉 If the drone already has the included harness, no. It will work with GoPro 5, 6, and 7. The newest GoPro 8 with not work with the harness enclosure. Hope that helps! Fly safe! 🤙

I bought this unit as a refurb off eBay. I still think eBay is your best bet, buy one used w/ extra batteries and props. I also recommend the GoPro 7 over all others that will work in the gimbal. Hope that helps. 🤙

I’m torn between GoPro karma, and the DJI Mavic Mini/spark. I plan on focusing my footage towards car cinematography’s well as occasional ariel views such as this video captures. The karma is $299 with everything except the karma grip and backpack, the dji spark is $300/$350, and the mini $350/$500 depending on the bundle. Any feedback is appreciated, I just truly think dji is worth the money but on the fence due to the karma being cheaper as well as still high quality. Help :(

Spark is limiting w/ it's camera capabilities, but the karma is nearly 10x it's size.... that should be a key factor in deciding what you want from a drone... portability, quality, multifunction, and ease of use.. Hope that helps.

Камера снимает лучше однозначно насышенные цвета. Вот обьектив плохо что не поменять. Я подключил к phantom 2 h4-3d эту камеру. И теперь старый phantom снимает отличные кадры. Молодцы американцы хорошую камеру сделали.

Unfortunately, no. The GoPro 8 has a different port layout and doesn't work with the Karma Drone or Karma Grip. :(

Absolutely, should work great with a 6. The only GoPro that i on't believe works int he newest 8. I think they moves the inputs needed to the bottom, or other side. Hope that helps! Fly Safe!

A shame that the range is so horrible! If this had the range of a DJI, it would be better than the mavic series. GoPro should really try to make another drone.

I don't think they would ever recover in the eyes of the community for the debacle that was the first release of the Karma, tbh. They took their lumps and moved on to make some incredible advancements in stabilization and 360 footage. I would love to see them partner with a company to make their newer line of cameras 'work' with drone centric companies. But, who knows... anything is possible.

Cost is key, IMHO. If you can buy a used Karma w/ a few batteries and (maybe) a camera for 500ish. Definitely worth it.

Unfortunately not. The GoPro 8 & 9 have different camera dimensions and an gimbal adapter has not been developed.

Glad to see you still flying your karma. I remember your 2019 video. I am still flying mine. Btw. In terms of getting 4k non distortion (i.e. "linear") footage. Have you considered replacing the stock gopro lens with the Peau Productions non-distortion lenses? They remove the fisheye look. Just watched. When you're in superviews i can still see some distortion when you fly quicker and closer to the ground.. it pulls the image a lot less than the stock lens would for sure. A lot of my issue with GoPro and their 4k is how compressed it is... The one example I saw in your video was wavy lines that appear on the top of a roof. I get it a LOT when i shoot trees w/ lots of detail. Regardless, it seems like a cool little add-on.. i'll deff be looking it up. Thanks for sharing and sticking around. 👊

Yes, I shot some of the footage in superview by mistake, but kept it in the video because I liked the footage, and only discovered the error half through the edit (and I am a lazy sh*t). I should probably re-do the video because its just confusing. When using these lenses one should def only shoot in Wide view as thats when there is no distortion. I just checked the video again and I don't know if I am seeing the wavy lines. But I watched the original render and it could be the youtube compression creating artifacts. Having said that, I do agree with you about the data and bit rates in the gopros being so low. I especially feel it when trying to colour grade videos shot in Protune. Its a pity cos these little cameras can get into the most interesting places. I guess one has to accept their limitations for all their other good features. Keep up the good work. Its fun exploring my interests with others on the journey

They made a beautiful drone but when I did the update I no longer have the GPS working and there’s no upgrade to get it going. I bought the drone because it had GPS and I paid for that feature so sad it’s been taken away from all of us that bought one. Please give us back our GPS we paid for 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🤷🏻‍♂️

Actually I attribute your choppy footage to you not following the 180 degree rule... Did you use any ND filters on the lens? That is the main reason your footage is choppy...
