The Gordie Howe International Bridge is scheduled to open by the end of 2024. It will be 1.6 miles long spanning from Detroit, MI to Windsor, Canada. It will have the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America at 2,799 ft. At a cost of around $5.7 billion. This will replace the aging Ambassador Bridge that was built in 1927 - 1929 and only cost $23.5 million.
The Ambassador Bridge has to be demolished within five years after the new span opens, according to the Canadian government's conditions for the new span. Over and over, Transport Minister Marc Garneau and the government's order-in-council call the new bridge a “replacement” span.Oct 15, 2017

The reference to the Ambassador Bridge being torn down within 5 years was in reference to a 2nd span being built at the Ambassador location, not the Gordie Howe. The Marouns have said a second Ambassador span is no longer part of their plans. The Canadian government will not want the Ambassador torn down just yet because they've said the goal was to have redundancy. Having said that, one wonders how long the Ambassador can stay structurally sound or financially viable. There will be little reason for any Canadian to use the Ambassador as the 401 will link directly to the Gordie Howe. Even for most Windsorites, the Gordie Howe will be more convenient from the E.C. Row Expressway. Here are my fearless predictions: -Canadian border services will focus its resources and officers on the Gordie Howe, leaving very little staff at the Ambassador, lines will get very long for anyone who does cross there. -Ambassador simply serves as that backup redundancy should 401 or Gordie Howe be blocked by an accident or other reason -The City of Windsor will reclaim its surface streets for local traffic and pedestrians, lowering speed limits on Huron Church -Traffic on Ambassador dries up to a trickle, Marouns no longer find it profitable. -Maybe Ambassador is torn down eventually as it deteriorates, but replaced by a much smaller single span bridge to maintain redundancy
