Glasses-free 3D panels have never looked so good - and with the help of Acer and their SpatialLabs technology 3D gaming might finally take off. Or at least Gordon seems to think so.

3D is incredibly well suited to video games. The interactivity mixed with depth really does feel Immersive. I played a 3D game on PS3 back in the day and even with glasses, it was incredible. If they can make that monitor larger and prices drop. That will be amazing! Converting games to 3D should be significantly easier than on films.

I am completely onboard with this! I have a passive glasses LG 1080p TV (and a New 3DS XL), and once you played games that supported 3D, like Tomb Raider or Crysis it is a fantastic experience, and once you turned the 3D off, you literally lost a whole dimension to the image. It is SO much easier to judge distance when you have stereoscopic vision. Another part of this as well is VR. I would rejoice if stereoscopic rendering becomes a standard in game development (both for VR and 3D monitors). It would also massively boost the amount of games you could use a VR headset for. Sure, they won't be as immersive as full VR games, but still, the stereoscopic vision and head-tracking is enough to make any game far more immersive, even if you play with a normal controller. I also think it would add immense value to purchasing a high quality PCVR headset. (as well as monitors like these)

I've mentioned this in another comment, but there's also a technology that CReal is developing for VR headsets to put images in and out of focus according to the distance from the viewer. While said like this it may sound necessarily incredible, it seems it looks super impressive and it adds a lot in terms of immersivity and how awesome it could be combining that technology with these 3d glassless displays for games.

I'm still using nvidia vision and its excellent. The problem was one eyed reviewers who didn't set it up properly, and poor native game support. Fortunately since then, many hundreds of games have been fixed for 3d, and with 3d fix manager you can easily install the fixes. Helixmod has a list of games. Its unfortunate that nvidia gave up on it, but that hasn't stopped more games being fixed.

What you are describing is the exact same as what Nintendo 3DS did back in 2010. Using a camera to track your position and change the scene to match. There was a universal driver that you could use that turned a 3D rendered game that uses Direct X and made it possible to render in Anaglyph and make use of shutter glasses as well as support other features. Some obscure companies tried this and disappeared quickly. Does NVidia still support their shutter glasses? Some other companies quickly drop support for this and it is unfortunate

I had the Nvidia 3D Vision kit back in the day and it was pretty cool for some games but I honestly spent most of my time trying to make games work properly. I had tried Nvidia 3D vision back in the day, and man it was mindblowing. I'm really sad it didn't stick because the technology truly does help with immersion and the experience just simply is better than without 3D. The problem is true though, I'm already a glasses wearer and now I have to wear these funky glasses? Ick... I'm surprised there's still a pursuit from manufacturers towards 3D technology, and honestly if Gordon is impressed I'll have to follow this technology and see where it's headed. Hopefully for the better and maybe in a few years I'll pick it up. Thanks Gordon for the reporting!

The glasses problem is mainly because we are still using the same conventional curved lens technology that has been in use for centuries. With the upcoming future of flat metalenses the addition of extra optics for 3D would be completely unnoticeable because the layers are so thin.

I want to know what they're actually doing to achieve this. 'Hardware this,' and, 'software that,' doesn't cut it when it's not explained, and I can find no in-depth explanation of what they're actually doing. A promo image on their website shows what implies a multi-layer display, which would make some amount of sense if they're aiming for a lenticular effect, and I've seen one video that uses lenticular as an analogy, though I'm not sure how direct that analogy was meant to be. Also price isn't a generational thing. While it might be cheaper on the manufacturing side, the consumer side won't see deep cuts. What will reduce costs is competition, assuming anyone else catches on. Sony apparently has a 3D panel coming, though I don't have details on it. There's also the Looking Glass, though that'll forever be expensive due to what they're doing. I'm curious to see what other companies pop into the competition with, assuming 3D enters it's fad phase and survives beyond the fad phase.

3D gaming isn't a new thing. Nintendo tried it with the Famicom (it failed due to high price). They thought of 3D gaming for SNES, but dropped it. The first glasses-free 3D screen was when Nintendo introduced the GameCube. It had the hardware and everything, and at E3 (or SpaceWorld, I don't remember) it had a 4-inch glasses-free 3D display. Sadly, it was scrapped after it was done. Then, 3DS came in, and it wasn't that good. Enter New 3DS with face-tracking tech, and it got better. Then, Nintendo never revisited it ever again.

I wouldn't say 3dVision failed so much as like all marketing fads Nvidia pulls, they just stop bothering to support it and it loses momentum. 3DV has a dedicated following and people who have spent tons of time modifying games to be compatible. And they are still going at it as far as they can get with the last released drivers before it was ripped out. Again, this is more on Nvidia. They only care as long enough as they can pay to get mediocre implementation into latest AAA games to be a marketing check box. Do some googling, there are a LOT of games that have had 3DV support added out there. Personally I just want 3D Vision in a headset. No VR just the 3d part so it's like a 3DS strapped to your face.

3d movies/tv did poorly because 95% of what was played as "3d" wasn't actually 3d, just some shitty fake 2d converted to 3d crap (it has to be filmed with 3d cameras, you cant really convert it) so you just got a poor experience for more money. The actual 3d stuff which was rare, looks great and totally worth it. Just a great example of greedy capitalism and stupid consumers killing something. Good VR is awesome, but its not only expensive but it needs different content, you cant really just convert stuff. So its harder to develop for and until the prices come down, its hard to get mass adoption. But as someone who has a higher end set up, its absolutely amazing with the right software and hardware and an experience thats just not remotely available anywhere else. When it make's it's way into a major TV brand I'll take it seriously. If AI gets to a point that it can optimize a tv show or video game on the fly in real time. That's when it will become a serious must have thing. When the tech can basically optimize and decide what content needs to be in 3d and what doesn't with little user input then I'm a buyer. My only question is viewing angles? Do you have to be dead center to the screen or can you be off axis?

I don't mind wearing glasses for 3D, just as long as they don't strain my eyes and give me a headache, which has been the problem with every 3D setup that I've tried. But, if these 3D displays look as good without needing glasses, and there's no eyestrain or headaches from using it, then all the better. I'd probably give it a go at some point.

Except this is not like that, were you not paying attention? This tracks your eyes, its not reliant on being in a specific spot. And the resolution is massively higher. You are comparing a model T to a Camaro, "people didnt like the slow model T, they wont like the camaro either"

After the disappointment of the 3DS, anyone and everyone has a very uphill battle of convincing me that glasses free 3D gaming is back and worth anything. And I bet it still causes headaches after just a couple of minutes. And what's the framerate, how does two cameras impact the framerate? Also I don't understand the resolution. Gordon says it's a 2160p display but then says you only get 1080p for each eye? Huh? Am I playing at 2160p or 1080p if I use this? If it's not obvious, I remain utterly unconvinced. (to be clear, the 3DS itself is a great system with plenty of great games - but the 3D was incredibly disappointing. within the first week I was already turning it off in everything. Even the "New 3DS" with improved 3D didn't change much, I had the same experience with that one - on for a few minutes, then off shortly after. And permanently off after about a week of owning it.)

If you understand how the technology used in this display works (Very similar in function to the Official PlayStation 3D TV) then you'd have a pretty good understanding of what's going on here in regards to the resolution. Essentially, if you understand what 1080i is, in that the resolution is pretty much 540 × 1920 × 2 (i = interlaced) then take that concept and boost from 1080i to 2160p, but remove the interlacing but still split the resolution of the image for each eye, that is when you end up with 1080p per-eye, or, 2160p when 3D is switched off.

Maybe some people are more sensitive to the 3D effect. I ONLY use my 3DS in 3D mode and I can play for hours no problem. When I turn it off it makes the games look dull and flat, I couldn’t imagine playing that way after enjoying the 3D for so long.

@@longnamedude3947 Pretty much everything. I never played it back when it was released and I bought two of the New 3DS XL’s and a bunch of games a few years ago when they were ending production. I finally got around to installing Homebrew the other day and have been catching up on all the games I missed. Currently playing Metroid Samus Returns and Fire Emblem Awakening the most. Also started Ocarina of Time which I’ve never actually played believe it or not, and the 3D effect is great on that game.

Honestly, if we can actually get proper, affordable, high-quality 3D on our screens in the not-too-distant future, I'd probably go for it! Between displays and GPU tech, we're definitely better poised to make better use of it than we were 10 years ago.

I believe you, in sure it looks amazing. But you have to convince a lot of gamers who rejected the 3d function on the 3ds. If it keeps the 3d effect without issue, let's you keep the same resolution, doesn't require a massive GPU, and you can experience it on all your favorite games, then it may be a winner. Y'all ask though

It's still going to fail... again. The laptop screens are too small for it to be immersive. It's another marketing gimmick that will push prices even higher with laptops. Do you think Acer can maintain optimizng all the games for this 3D tech? They can't even have consistent firmware for their monitors and we expect them to do this for all games? How many years will they support it? So many questions that Acer needs to nail... good luck!
@ptose

I suspect they are showing it on small displays because to push this on a regular monitor like a 32 inch they should use 8k, which is at the moment it's still in many ways beyond what gpus can do (ok, a 4090 with dlss on certain games could do it to a degree but it's super expensive stuff). But I think that in maybe five, seven years this will look a much more feasible thing.

It doesn’t just need Acer’s support though. These monitors work with the existing library of 3D Vision fixes w/ Helixmod, which number in the thousands, as well as the emulators and games with native 3D support built in, i.e. Citra, Dolphin. So the entire Nintendo 3DS, GameCube and Wii libraries already have 3D support.
