This chef is “condescending, rude, and abusive”. Can Gordon fix that before it’s too late?

"Chappy’s closed in June 2013 because the Chappy’s restaurant was seized by the state of Tennessee for failure to pay taxes." Chappy didn't even get his shit together at the end anyway, had to rely on the stand in chef to finish off for him so the place would've shut down anyhow. Chappy's a knob.

On June 18, 2013, Chappy closed the restaurant with no warning. Five years later dozens of workers are still owed thousands of dollars but Chappy has simply left town. And with the building now coming down, it's more than certain that's money those employees will never see.

theres a reason Gordon being famous and received tons of respect from people despite how bad attitude he given to them. thats he being himself and offer people who needs help despite the fact that how rude he could be. when it comes to business you cant just pamper your employees when they repeat a single simple mistake, especially in hospitality industry where your first and top priority are the business and customer.

They both knew customers didn't like his food and Gordon handed success to them on a silver plate, yet his ego is so big he couldn't even save his restaurant for his wife, let alone his staff that was about to get unemployed. It kinda makes sense though. When the owner is the head chef, it's about THEIR food. If the owner is like many others on this show where they just bought it on a whim, it makes more sense to be okay to switch up the food, since there was never a real commitment to the recipes to begin with. It's like if you were an artist and had people loving your sketches, and then you were offered a spot as a featured artist in a museum, but they would only hang your works up if they were a stencil-copy of someone else's work, you'd be devastated.

Its called NPD Narcissistic Personality Disorder. This chef would rather sabotage his business, and the livilihood of those who work for him, to make it look like his business failed because of things out of his control. The idea of his wife being impressed with a new menu, his staff embracing it, customers loving it, counts for nothing with those who suffer NPD. In life we all make silly and stupid decisions and can freely say it, but people with NPD are too sensitive to criticism and take it personally, so advice causes resentment beyond belief and so they avoid it and do the opposite, because to admit they were failing, is personal humiliation. Yup, I have been there. I let go and everything went to hell. We were understaffed (not saying this as an excuse it was all my fault) and I let it go because I was burned out. In a matter of months whole kitchen was laughing behind my back, servers too, kitchen was a mess, food was not up to standard etc. Until one day my girlfriend showed up, got in the kitchen said hi and left. After service she was waiting for me to get home, looked me straight in the eyes and told me "that kitchen looked like a public toilet in a bad neighborhood, this is not who you are." Didn't sleep all night not only because I was sad and miserable, but because I was waiting for the next day to come, I wanted so bad the sun to rise up have a coffee and go to the restaurant and be a real cook. Changed it all in one day and never went back to be that chef. So yeah, be as picky as you want, never settle for anything that is lower than your standards. You do that one day and another one and oh, never mind, one more I am tired and you slowly drift off course and you don't even know it.

I wonder if Gordon sometimes as food related nightmares. Maybe like everything he tries to eat is either overcooked or raw and he can't find anything properly cook to eat or maybe even everything he tries to cook comes out as raw or overcook and he end up losing all his clients. Anyway we all have our nightmares and I can't wait for the new season.

I think this is an example of the customer is always right - obviously, before they moved the restaurant was working, but now it doesn't. Instead of adapting the food to the market, they stuck with it and then had to reduce quality, reduce staff, and pre-cook food. None of that happens overnight but builds up over time. The customer is always right - if they don't like your food/service/decor then they won't continue with you.

@@willrichards32 yeah very strange. I guess with a lot of restaurants on the show it’s a downward spiral - dry spell causes them to cheap out and/or freeze food in bulk to cost save, which reduces the quality of the food, and less people come, so they’ve got to keep reducing the cost of the food or increase prices. On top of that it burns out the owners and they either lose their competent chefs or they become just as disengaged. It’s always sad when you analyse it like that imo

I mean, I bet Gordon invites people he knows from the area to come into these places with all sorts of dietary conditions because he has that kind of reach. Especially in Nashville, a very populated city, it isn't too much of a stretch to imagine a pescatarian coming in, especially to a cajun resturaunt. I'd assume the show would have these customers coming in know if they have any allergies or dietary conditions. Tldr: I don't think she's an actor, but is someone who was brought in to be "the pescatarian" just to judge the resturaunts food safety standards.

Hate it when chefs say that the customer is an idiot and therefore he won't change. Yes, the customer could be an idiot but guess what, that idiot pays for your roof so sometimes you got to suck it up and make it up to them. Having verbal feedback is crucial because most customers don't complain to the chef or write an online complaint, they simply don't come back.

Do they have any lawful hygiene standards in the USA? Do they have food hygiene inspectors? In the UK, places that serve food have regular and often unannounced inspections and can be shut down. Some places are given chances to improve and given advice. Health inspectors have the power to close places with immediate effect.....this place would likely have been immediately shut down by the standards in that fridge.
@hnichole

Yes, there are health and safety inspections that food establishments have to pass to stay open in the US. I only worked in food service in California, idk how thorough inspections are in other states, but I and all other friends I know that have worked in food have experienced these standards. Also, this was filmed over 10 years ago, so I wonder if perhaps rules were more ... lax maybe? I can't imagine them being THIS lax though, so maybe Tennessee inspectors just aren't that thorough??

States differ in how they regulate restaurants. But I have to imagine that even in Tennessee the restaurant inspectors take their jobs seriously. That said, bribery is more common in some areas than others. I have worked in the New York restaurant world for 20 years and if you get caught trying to bribe an inspector there are very serious consequences. The most you can offer them is a glass of tap water. There are still definitely places here in the city that make me wonder if some folks do indeed get away with bribery though because some places are appallingly gross behind the scenes.
