I agree with that. But, unpopularly, this is my favourite album, even more than Demon Days. I know DD was a game changer for music and also with its political stances, but some songs, imo, are too dead and repetitive. I can’t get through the intro of All Alone, White Light is my least favourite for obvious repetitive and even Kids With Guns is a bit too dead with 2-D’s sleepy vocals, even on the chorus. The Now Now in comparison is consistently good. None of the songs are as experimental or as political as its predecessors, but that’s what makes me like it so much. They all are extremely pleasant to listen to, except Hollywood because of how Humanz-esque it was. Repetitive chorus with plain 2-D vocals, and an annoying trap beat plus being the longest track on the record just doesn’t suit me. I do like hip hop, all the first and third LP’s hip hop songs, but it just doesn’t feel right for me. But other than that, the rest is amazing. I love a lot of the songs, but Souk Eye is definitely my favourite. Haven’t had a great ending to an LP since, well, their self-titled debut. Demon Days drilling ‘to the sun’ into my skull makes that one hard to listen to, but everything for this track feels perfect to me. EDIT: I give this record a strong 9/10

I feel that, although it might not be a “back to basics” kinda album, Gorillaz always seemed like a band that you’re not meant to like everything from. In a way there's still a certain "sound" and production choices that makes up for Gorillaz' music's identity, and trying new sounds does risk the fact of losing parts of that identity, which is somewhat true for this album, and definitely mostly true for Humanz, the seemingly cartoonish but zany and quirky production that made Gorillaz feel otherworldly and interesting in the first place as a musical act seemed almost nowhere to be found on Humanz (hence the "Various Artists ft. Gorillaz" joke surrounding it) and that identity still somewhat wounded in The Now Now.

Plastic Beach has aged really well, maybe the best of all the Gorillaz albums, but nothing tops Demon Days. Something about combining a still up and coming Danger Mouse and Albarn really captured lightning in a bottle. I mean if I had to pick a weak track I'd say that November Has Come is probably it, and yet it's got freaking MF Doom on it, so how bad can it be.

Though I adore Plastic Beach, I think it has the same level of quality as Demon Days, with the latter having a much more apocalyptic vibe than the refreshing easy going vibe Plastic Beach has going for. Both are superb albums that shine a lot in their differences.

I feel like The Now Now and The Fall are those two borderline-EP’s that act as “guilty pleasures” to have beyond the main 3-4 albums (Humanz isn’t considered here). While I think the Fall is like a decent 5, the Now Now is definitely a strong 7 for me and I think it can be a quality record without delving too deep like their other albums. I enjoyed this more than self titled, the fall, and Humanz, so I’d say it’s a perfectly good Gorillaz project.

Something I noticed about The Now Now is that it's a post-breakup album. From beginning to end the tracks talk about the pains of growing apart from a friend or a loved one and the issues of dealing with residual feelings. It's definitely a moody album and it 100% has a west-coast sad summer night feeling to it. Hollywood, Tranz, Magic City, and Souk Eye come to mind as being the most "this is night out song." I will say though that it's a very lore-heavy album. I think since it's been SO long since Plastic Beach that Daman wanted to return to the story a bit more. I think this was also an attempt to recapture his groove a bit since Humanz was such a flop tonally. It's a decent album that proves that Daman still has what it takes to write interesting sounding songs while still keeping up with the story. I think that Jamie played a big role in this one as well since it was so lore heavy.
@Pedro-ql4pq
@Pedro-ql4pq 6 жыл бұрын
The album is musically beautiful, as basically every Gorillaz album always is, Damon's genius always shows. The problem I'm having is making a connection to these last couple of albums (Humanz, Now Now). I think it might be because there is a lack of music videos to make that connection for us. Yeah I get it, some people are not that into the visuals or lore of the Gorillaz, but that's beyond my point, the point is that back then we had awesome story-telling with the videos to go along with Damon's own story telling in the music. I guess it's just difficult to fall in love with songs like Kansas, Souk Eye, etc the same way we fell for Feel Good Inc., Melancholy Hill, RhineStone Eyes, etc, because of that lack of connection between the music the visuals the fans With that said, the album IS amazing musically speaking. But I agree with Melon when he says Damon has seen better days in regards to mixing genres. Demon Days is still untouched.

Sorry, but saying 'all their albums are fantastic' makes you just come off as a blind fan boy. It is impotent to more harshly criticise the things you love in order to be more objective in the future. Also, one of the reasons huamnz was criticised due to the poor mixing and arrangements in certain songs, theirs nothing "genius" about that.
@malkuusha
@malkuusha 5 жыл бұрын
En Joshi-Godrez well, as you said, this is just only your opinion. There is no such a thing as a “criticism”, when you are a fan of smthg, cause all of fans have different opinions and tastes. I’ve seen people, who called the “Humanz” the best album. And they are not stupid. Not right or wrong. This is just their opinion. That’s all
@enjoshi-godrez8775
@enjoshi-godrez8775 3 жыл бұрын
Nope. Not true at all. You are entitled to your opinion, but you are not at all entitled to how people perceive it. Someone that provides an explanation to justify what they said will be perceived as having a more valid opinion than someone that refuses to justify theirs. Saying "all options are equal" would only make sense if you are the only person that is being referenced is you. The second you tell it to someone else, it is no longer up to you how valid that opion is perceived by who ever you a talking to. You can choose to not care or debate on whether you agree with them, also known as 'conversation'. But you can't act like what you said is will be "equally valid" to everyone else. "options are equal" literally doesn't work in the real world. Grow up and start living in it.

First frame of 0:38, there is a editing error with the green screen. Could just be a rendering oddity, but just thought I'd point it out because it noticed it flash into my vision for a frame. You could probably make the full review clip as its own sequence with the albums covers and images rendered in, and then just zoom in on that sequence as if it's a clip, and cut that around to help diminish errors like this. Great review like usual btw!

Nah nah nah. This album is worthy of much more than a light-to-decent 6. On my scale I place it at about an 8, maybe 7.5 at the lowest. It's a fantastic return to form after the bloated, disjointed mess with way too many guests and features that Humanz was. The Now Now felt like a cleansing. Washing off all the excess and getting back to basics. This album feels like how 2D looked during the video for Humility. An ex-junkie getting clean and going off for a soul-cleansing roller skate through sunny Venice Beach with a renewed sense of vigor and resolve. Refreshing. It had all the stuff that draws me into Gorillaz' work. Smooth beats and baselines complemented by funky synth/keyboard/piano riffs. Love it. And I cant wait for the 7th album to come. Hope that now they're all nice and cleansed they can take their time with it and produce something really special. Something on par with Demon Dayz.

The thing is, there really is no Gorillaz. I mean that you can't really name a Gorillaz album under a single genre. I thought that the initial backlash towards Humanz was that it mostly sounded like a modern rap album. But the thing is, Damon has always incorperated Rap into all of their albums (except The Fall). I thought it was a good album, certanly not on par with Demon Days or Plastic Beach, but it was still respectable. I don't think it deserved all the hate it got.
