All I know about steel is that I sailed the first five ducks I shot at when forced to use it that the dogs couldn’t find. Went home and haven’t shot it since. Good video as it shows why. 👍🏼

Yeah they don’t want it banned for its performance reasons dude.. there needs to be an environmentally friendly alternative to lead, and I don’t think steel is it.

@@James28R Yeah, but if you look it up.... Lead is a naturally occurring metal found in small amounts that comes from the earth's crust. I'd be more concerned about people throwing out plastic and garbage than shooting lead pellets from a shotgun.

@@James28R Lead used in ammunition is hard lead, it barely leaches into the soil/water at all as it forms and oxidized layer which is not soluble. There's a reason we still find 100s of years old lead and cannon ball, roman 'sling-bullets' from 1000s of years ago etc.

@@James28R Lead is part of the environment, like everything else it comes from the earth. When inhaled as fumes it’s dangerous, when consumed as a solid it’s harmless. It doesn’t poison birds as some would have us believe, it also doesn’t sit on the surface long. It’s heavy so it sinks through mud and lake sediments and is far out of reach for birds.

In the UK we have been forced to use steel on Wildfowl since 1999 and in that time we have learned a great deal how best to use it. The very low density/weight of steel shot must be compensated by higher velocities. I would not consider using a steel cartridge with a speed of less than 1400 fps, even for clays. Shot size must also be increased, No5 shot is now regularly used on clays here. (Not sure if thats allowed in major competions yet) The bigger shot/weight increases penetration, but you do lose some patten. For Game and Duck i use No3 or No1 34/36g loads shot and speeds of 1450/1550 fps. Choke also can be tighter than modified, but there is a risk of ring bulges over time so if you use a high value gun best use modified.

So basically the way I see it steel could be used as a defense round at the very least, for shotguns. If u don't want projectiles over penetrating this makes sense to me. So long as u keep range in mind, but for home defense that's fine cuz ur dealing with less range typically anyhow
@stephenparchewski1998

Good video. Another thing to take into consideration is velocity. Lead shot will retain a higher velocity down range over steel. It’s kind of like comparing a golf ball to a pingpong ball. If you throw both at the same speed, the golf ball will travel further at a faster speed.

Very good test Russel. However you touch the subject your self. I shoot in a country with steel only ( apart from a few ranges that allows lead in ISSF disciplines) my own OT is steel only. And this the national governing body here, have allowed to shoot OT with shot size 6 and 28 grams. That has almost the same power as the 24 gram lead allowed in ISSF. It could be interesting to do that test. And yes we still shoot the steel through some tight chokes here, no worries as long as shotsize is no bigger than 6 and 28 grams. I honestly think manufacturers cover their bases with the no more than half choke. If not, some one would go full choke with BB and 42 grams.
@GoShooting
@GoShooting 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Lars, I hope you are well. The penetrating power of steel on short range targets is adequate, but for your second barrel at Olympic Trap, long range sporting targets or even targets that are hard in composition, in my opinion, steel 7 1/2's wont cut it. I understand the situation you face in your country. 28 grams of 6 shot would help (but as you know that amount and size are illegal in ISSF). IF steel becomes mandatory then targets will need to be made softer and thrown closer if the same scores are to be realised. Handicap shooters in American Trap or DTL are kidding themselves with steel loads.

I can honestly say I have no issues with second shot ( steel, no 6 24 gr).albeit a mediocre recreational shooter I have no stakes in it. Some of the guys I shoot with are seasoned shooters, ( participants Seoul olympics ). And they are not complaining. And the good shooters often get 25. They would all prefer lead, but not due to the breaks, but the less recoil. This weekends local competition ( 28 guns). Lowest final score was 110 highest 119. All with steel shot. Not international standard, I know but also the Danish trap community isn’t that big ( and not many regularly score MQS). All targets was thrown according to ISSF regulation. Don’t get me wrong, majority would shoot lead if we could. But after a lead ban since 1996, we have grown accustomed to it.

@@GoShooting At shotshell.drundel.com I found this quote: "Lead shot, which is easily deformed upon firing, develops a relatively long, large-diameter shot string. Steel shot, because it is three times harder than lead, stays round, and develops a shot string that is 50-60% shorter and 60-70% narrower than lead."

The evidence is there. Irrespective, in the UK, steel is being forced, and narrative reigns supreme with experts and a unanimous lack of knowledge or practical thinking, based on scientific facts. The World War One battle fields have been completely bypassed, with both lead and steel being in the ground for over 100 years. This is a backdoor attack on shooting itself, I feel. Enjoyed your video. Thank you.

For bird hunting that it always better to prioritize steel even if it’s performance are less than lead. Lead is toxic and will contaminate the meat you eat, the carcasses you left behind that other animals will eat and be contaminate as well, water too is susceptible to be contaminated. You can adapt if you were using #7 lead you can try #6 steel to compensate for the lesser density of the steel.

At 1250 fps in steel its little better than useless, up it to 1500 fps + and its a different ball game. Unfortunately this exceeds CIP regulations so no commercial manufacturer will go there.
@ljp200
@ljp200 Жыл бұрын
They do make that, just not for your area. In Denmark I can buy 600M/S ( 1900fps.) shot if I wanted, anything less than 400m/s (1300fps.) is elligal to use while hunting. Steel has other limits than Lead and all these tests are pretty irrelevant when they do not take the differences in material into account. We have had no issue using steel for 30 years here, and many of us are wondering what the hell the fus is about.
