Perhaps as bad as this title is, losing a hand is no joke. But this seems to be the case with one of House's patients when they discover the strange cause of a patient's hands turning purple through a lack of oxygen.

Cuddy feels responsible when her handyman (Ignacio Serricchio) falls off her roof then exhibits unusual symptoms. House's team amputates the handyman's hand to prevent the spread of infection, but when the other hand starts showing similar signs, they must seek out the source before it kills the patient.

@@tgbluewolfThat’s not _all_ they do. Ethics committees do have one primary job: preventing invasive and unnecessary patient studies. They’re especially important for medical trials, which can last years and affect patients for the rest of their lives afterward, and medical studies which survey, test, and watch patients in variously invasive ways that can negatively affect them. Some tests can go wrong too, so it’s important that patient consent forms get reviewed and patients are able to read what the risks of tests are. Here, they’re only a slowdown of the most do-or-die department in the hospital that focuses on treating patients.

House's "Can't work as a cripple?" really hurt Cuddy because she crippled him, and still feels guilty about it. Maybe part of House wanted to cut the kid's hand off because he himself chose not to cut off his leg, and has to live with the constant pain. To him, cutting the kid's hand off is better for him in the long run. He might not be able to work, but he won't live in chronic pain.

I agree with the first half But not with with second. When house was confronted with someone who needed their leg amputated he fought HARD for it not to happen well past the point other doctors thought it was the right thing to do. Having his choice taken away somewhat makes him less inclined to just chop someone up rather than more so. I think here he just thought it was necessary to keep him alive.

My favorite thing about this episode was the bet they made when they were trying to get into Cuddy's house. If I remember correctly, House pulled out of his credit card insinuating he was gonna use it to break into the house. He then said something like, "Twenty bucks if I can break in in less than ten seconds." After Chase and Foreman agreed, he then took the spare key underneath the pot outside the front door. The camera then switched to the look of disappointment on Chase and Foreman's face when they handed him the money.

PP is referenced as a teaching hospital, and House's cases are specially-selected from those that have baffled the rest of the medical staff (I think he also takes vetted referrals from other institutions). Part of the reason he has a team is to train-up other diagnosticians to his level of excellence. That may have something to do with it. In any case, it's not the focus of the show. But, yes, the American medical system is a ridiculous blood-sucking nightmare. Costs the most and delivers the least amongst all developed nations. This episode is absurd because the family is already 100000% financially crippled by these hospital bills, hand or no hand
@phastinemoon
@phastinemoon Жыл бұрын
The in-universe explanation is that the hospital is a college, and offers free treatment for those who can’t afford it (and who House really wants to diagnose because the puzzle is interesting) Possibly, in this case, Cuddy is also footing the bill, since the kid fell off HER roof.

Cameron tells House that Alfredo is dying right outside the patient room. My Dr. Mike intuition tells me that such a conversation wouldn't have happened out in the open like that.
@michaelccozens

Probably not, but she didn't think the mother spoke any English, and she was delivering alarming news of an immediate threat to life in the patient's lack of urination. The other questionable bit is why the kid brother would need to tell them the patient had stopped peeing. They usually monitor that stuff pretty-closely. That's why those hospital pee-jars have volume gradations on the side.

The brain is really freakin cool, and way more impressive than we can comprehend. It's more powerful than most computers, has insane graphical processing, it can contain a lifetime of information to draw upon, produce and organize hormonal feedback loops, and most impressively create unique and advantageous personalities. Other animals evolved to have sharper claws, denser bones, prehensile tails. We evolved to have bigger brains. We won. Brain ftw.
