Hey Matts, my wife and I use to have a cabin down the hill from where you're fishing. I know that lake real well and fished it for over 20 years. I found the best spots were along the south shore and the cove by where you launched. Try the north fork of the Stanislaus River. The Sour Grass campground is a good place to stay. I think you've fished there in the past. Rainbow Power nuggets were always the best. Thanks for sharing, it brought back a lot of wonderful memories!

The olive nymphs are damsels. They hatch into the blue and grey flies that people mistake for dragon flies. They are in almost every lake in the west and the fish love them. Damsels, pheasant tails, chironomids, leeches and scuds are patterns that you should always have when fishing lakes.

Love the content brother. One tip I would give though is even if its just one fish or a whole campfire feast. Before you clean your catch, Start your fire and feed it medium sized sticks like the ones you were using as "big fuel". Whether it is cooking it straight on the coals or in a frying pan you want that radiant heat that coals produce rather than flame. 30ish minutes is a good starting to point to start cooking but if you're hungry then stop feeding the fire after you get a few medium pieces going and wait 10 minutes a 20 minute fire should easily stay alive (weather depending of course Rain, Wind and fuel source etc) Also when cooking a fish on a stick/skewer start on the topside (dorsal fin) as it is thicker than the belly flaps and that way you don't over cook any part but still cook it through. You will get a fall apart fish but still juicy and wont burn of that precious belly fat.

What I like doing for little eater trout is 10 lb main line, with a 1/2 oz. egg slider weight, a plastic bead from the craft store as a buffer to not have the lead weight beat up the knot on my swivel, then the snap swivel. Depending on the height of the weeds is my leader, I tend to run a 2 foot and a 3 foot, then switch if one is hotter than the other. I like 6-8 lb leader with a treble hook (size 10 i think), and I use garlic scented powerbait dough, the playdoh can stuff. Just make sure it floats the hook and cast it into about 20 ft of water.
@uzumakinagato81132 жыл бұрын
I use 2 pound line for streams and rivers. 4 pound if I’m at the lake and have to soak power bait. Personally I don’t like using treble hook. I use owner mosquito light hooks size 6 & 8 depending on which body of water I’m fishing.

I cook my trout mainly in a foil pack. Head and tail removed. Lemon pepper, garlic salt, butter and lemon wedges inside the cavity and out. Wrap tight and place on coals for 8 to 10 min with a flip in the middle. Yum!

If you take off the head how do you know when the eyes pop? They are like the little red popper thing in store bought turkeys. Once they pop you know the meat is done. I use salt, pepper, garlic powder, fresh garlic, lemon slices, bacon, lemon thyme, and sweet onion tho

Close up.the fish in foil really well and put it on the bbq. Super soft and juicy, comes right off the bones. When my friend's son's caught their trout we cooked it this way and they loved it. Also another thing, if you're gonna cook like you did directly on the coals, wait till the flame is over with

Matt, when you are out on the Kayak you should a few feet of paracord to your paddle and tie that to the kayak and then have a 5 or 6 ft length of paracord tied to the kayak you can tie to rocks, logs or trees for when you get out. That way your kayak wont float away and your paddle can't get away from you either.

If you are where I think you are, those bugs are chirnonmids. They hatch on the bottom of the lake in 5-15 feet of water(from my experience) over soft bottom and rise to the surface, open their wings and fly away. When there's a "hatch" going on, the trout will be cruising over those patches of hatching bugs and vacuuming them up. You will see fly fisherman midging with their orange strike indicators trying to emulate a midge just off the bottom.
