Because They can sing amazingly The instrumental is literally just the chords (which don’t get me wrong still sounds good but it just makes it so it shines just as much as the voices, and with their talent, the vocals don’t depend on the instrumental and viceversa) The song’s tone really fits with the almost echoing background of the acapella, it has to do with the feeling it brings Oh and also the oohs by Kimbra in the second chorus, they are just as good as having instruments, her vocals are amazing, and so is Gotye’s, especially with the chorus

For the ones who still ask where Gotye is, the answer is easy: He still plays music with his band "The Basics" as drummer-singer, they also perform songs like this one or Heart a Mess (Both from Gotye as single). So thats it, i higly recommend his other works and to take a look at his band, they are pretty good actually. Every time I hear Kimbras voice, the "now and then i think of all the times" part, well all of her parts actually! But anyway she gives me the goosebumps fr fr, its like a Goddesses on a hilltop who's lived thousands of years and feel so much grief, an has so much otherworldly knowledge to say and convey!! Like its so magical ugh so fucking GOOD 🤙🤙✨🙄😩

I was in 9 month inpatient drug treatment when this song came out. Been sober ever since. I can remember me and another resident listing to this song Sunday mornings when it came out on MTV or vh1, very early am...prob the 1st week it was released... He was a huge music buff and loved this song..Jesse Gary is a good dude.. This song will always remind me of being there and even though it's not related to my situation, how far I've came since then. Absolutely amazing song and for the rest of my life I'll have distinct memories tied to this song.

Im 18, I ve just lost a soulmate because I treated her badly. I identified my mistakes and eliminated them, but she wants me to be completely erased from her life. She is in a new relationship as well, and I wont forget her till I die, even when I find someone better. So yeah, "Now you treat me like a stranger and it feels so rough"

I feel like in the main version you can’t even hear the music over all the… music. They both have such gorgeous voices and you can hear such raw emotion in their singing, but with all the backup music it gets drowned out

Yeah, this version just highlights just how good their voices are

If you listen very very closely you can here the music as the tiniest of notes coming from one of the headphones, and honestly, just noticing the little things while Gotye is singing makes this so golden, because the slightest backbone beat from the song is what really does it for me
