From what I read the law was created long ago to encourage land owners to be productive with the land they own. They didn't want someone buying a lot of land in a place where there is demand for land and just let it sit there.

Housing is a special case because it is literally the roof over one's head. If there is a dispute between a landlord and a tenant, society -- and the legislatures that represent it -- generally agrees that the dispute should be resolved in court before a tenant is kicked out into the street. After all, what if it turns out that the landlord was wrong and the tenant was right all along? Then the tenant will have been homeless for nothing. The problem is that there is a fundamental difference between tenants and squatters, and the lawmakers have only just begun to realize this. Better late than never, I guess.

There have been squatters laws giving squatters rights to squatter for centuries. This is not a new law just passed by governments there are laws as far back as civilization goes. they were originally so someone could lay claim to a piece of property that they had to live on or cultivate for a certain period of time. Our own homestead laws are a good example of this. People could homestead a section of land if they made improvements and lived on it for a number of years. So they didn't start this mess.

Simultaneously, law makers made laws to restrict an individual's Right to work. So what happens to us workers? We become homeless. So Right to squat is the solution that the lawmakers have caused, which itself is racketeering--that is, paid to solve the problems their gang has caused--so lawmakers have now made even more laws to make squatting illegal, to thereby commit even more racketeering. mostly agree, but there are some rare cases where I think it should still be an option... For example a truly old and abandoned house or land where the squatter is actually doing things to improve the property.. yes its Very rare but from my understanding its one reason why squatting laws have existed... Im personally okay with squatting then, however if a property owner did surace there should be some legal recourse for them to override teh squatter.

Unfortunately that law does not apply to tenants turn squatters who had permission from the landlord to stay there to begin with. You have to take them to housing court.

Bravo NEW YORK and Governor Hochul! Similar to what the Governor of Florida did in March 2024 and Governor of Georgia in April 2024, this is what leaders are supposed to do. Learn about an issue (criminal opportunistic squatters, antiquated law) for those who put them in office and they immediately solve the tax paying citizens problem. Squatting criminals should be removed from the home immediately, charged with immediate FELONY and Minimum one year jail time plus restitution to the legal home and apartment owners. EVERY other Governor MUST immediately do the same with URGENCY. Legal Homeowners WHO pay the property taxes, mortgages, licenses, etc., to run these counties and cities are dying defending their legal property, like in New York, and others are going to jail trying to protect their LEGAL property. As well, Many have had to pay thousands of dollars in legal and repair bills. EVERY Mayor, Senator, Representative MUST take note and take IMMEDIATE action to protect the mom and pop homeowner, apartment owner, or small investor. The police have their hands tied WITHOUT an active signed State Law in place to abolish criminal squatters. What are the other States waiting for??

I have a Airbnb guest that been squatting for a few months and refuses to leave. The management of my coop wants to evict me and help these squatters find public housing. Does this new law allow me to get rid of these squatters right away?

Laws should be changed to have all signatures of landlord and tenant to be notarized. Any lease without that which is presented to police should be presumed fraudulent.

Thats only for tenants. She made it clear that squatters are not tenants and proof of owner permission to be there is required to prove you are a tenant.

Does this mean that we dont have to add John or Jane Doe to a nonpayment of rent or a holdover petition? Because in reality a person that remains in the home after the main tenant has been evicted would be considered a squatter since they have no lease or agreement with the landlord. Please correct if I am wrong. (NYC)

In Illinois, as long as a tenant pays the first month's rent and deposit, they never have to pay rent again. You can get a judgement against them, but they never have to pay the judgement.
