How are Christians to obey Christ’s command to obey corrupt earthly governments? Do we unconditionally obey earthly governments in obedience to God? How does the Christian live out this dual citizenship? Under what conditions, if any, do we disobey our earthly governments? In this message, Dr. Sproul talks about the role of government in the world and how the Christian is to live with the tension of two kingdoms.
This message is from R.C. Sproul's 12-part teaching series Christian Worldview. Learn more: www.ligonier.org/learn/series...

Around 5:00 minutes RC explains what Israel was going through in Rome. RC: "is Paul saying we all have to be subjected to the religious authorities of the Sanhedrin? Or to the Theocratic authority of the state of Israel? He's writing to the Romans. (Believers) He's talking to those living under: • a secular govt • a corrupt govt • a govt that's opposed to the very principles of Christianity." A MESSAGE PERFECT FOR TODAY!

One of the more memorable sermons I remember from over a decade ago, by the Late Gary Hendrix (his sermon is one of his from his series in Romans, and what he preached on Romans 13) (his sermon is on sermon audio if you wish to hear), he gave a very well explained application of how "honor the king", and obeying government applies for us in a democratic government. For us at least in the United States, and for the other nations who have adopted our model of government, the founding fathers created our Constitution as the core rule of government and law for the nation, that all elected politicians are obligated to obey. He explained that with this, the "king", isn't a person or persons, but a creed(the constitution), a written law which is to be absolute. Similar in form In the way that the Bible is for us, "The word is God", in the way every command in Scripture obligates our obedience, the Constitution's instruction obligates obedience from both the people and the civil rulers. (This isnt only for Americans, but every nation which has a constitution) So he then applied that obedience to what Scripture says about obeying government, the constitution is our object of obedience (as long as it doesn't violate God's law) So when politicians overstep and violate constitutionality, and command something that violates our core laws, we have no obligation to obey them, as those politicians themselves are criminals in violation of the king. John Macarthur has a great sermon on this subject as well. He draws parallels to how our relationship to government is to be, to how marriage is to be. Especially to how women are "to be submissive to their husbands". This, in the law of God does not mean absolute no matter what blind obedience. If the husband violates the vows, commits adultery, or other severe betrayal, attempts to force her to commit sin against God, the wife is Not obligated to stay submissive but has the clean right to leave without moral penalty. And when you break it down, it is because the man broke oaths, and committed severe, willful betrayal. This concept, which explains God's line of thought in scripture, can be applied to our relationship to other human authorities. (For if one gets married, a spouse is also authorized by God, wether it be for good or for judgement. So it is how government is put over as authority. If a government runs rampant with evil, commands evil with its laws, violates justice, especially today where politicians swear an oath, which God takes seriously, to uphold law and justice. So if they violate their oath, they are done, you have no obligation to obey, support, fund, participate in their treachery. We held the Nazi's guilty all the way down to the basic concentration camp guards, they were morally obligated to resist the great evil of mass murder even though it was commanded against their will. Even if it cost their lives, they should have resisted. Can you say they have any excuse? They have none. Resisting a human authority is not automatically a sin, sometimes not resisting is the greater sin. Yes God is sovereign over all governments, but that doesn't automatically make all governments good. Some are raised up for judgement. He removes his Grace and evil runs rampant. When a government acts in Justice which is in line with God's law, they are to be obeyed, but if they act in evil, compliance= complicit in their evil. We are not commanded to turn the other cheek 100% of the time, otherwise it would have been a contradiction for Jesus to say " if you do not have a sword, sell your tunic and buy one" The end answer is to use great discretion, to study well God's law, for in it we understand Him and how he judges us. Blind obedience to the world is not what is commanded. For even our obedience to God's law itself is not blind, He desires our study to thoroughly learn and know that His law is absolutely good. In contrast, if we study a worldly government's laws and their actions, we see nothing but sin, evil, and violations of justice, save the minority of leaders who obeys God.

I genuinely wonder (and think about) how this applies and pertains to the founding of the US. Without turning the discussion sideways or into one of friction, I wonder this knowing that the first "shot" that was fired and heard 'round the world was possibly fired from a British musket, but it is evident that the colonists were harassing and instigating a much smaller British contingent physically intimidating and even threatening them as they were outnumbered. Leading up to that event, colonists also used violence and threats to intimidate and agitate Boston Governor Thomas Hutchinson (burnt his house down while his family was in it and had to escape for their lives) and British General Thomas Gage, which led to both of them returning to London. Their crime was that they were seen as loyalists to the crown even though Governor Hutchinson was supportive of American unification and independence but under the crown. History is what it is and I'm thankful for America, but I do wonder about the origin and beginning in the context of G-d's Word and will for our lives as Christians.

Hi there, KZfaq folks. I'm a male christian from Russia and I'm asking you a question: What do you think, should I obey the government's order to go to Ukraine, if they announce full mobilization next year? Personally, I consider this special military operation in Ukraine as an act of expansionism, which I can't accept as a "self-defense" type of thing; so I've decided, if the order would happened to obey as long as they allow me to protect our motherland borders as the borders were present in 2013. I think it'd be way better to put our resources in the way of life; saving people, saving animals; to build, not destroy.

According to scripture, God sets up and tears down ALL Kingdoms, that includes David's and Nero's (remember Nero tore down the temple and killed many Christians) The scripture says to pray for your leaders, it doesn't say you pick them, it says God does. From what I see, a nation is appointed a leader (by God) based on their rebellion to or faith in God. If we want change, then revival is needed, change the heart and pray. Just how I read the scripture. I used to be very political, now I'm waiting on Jesus and His Kingdom. Much love friends.

Imagination laughs at blind actors, It is in you as a person that the nature of God is revealed, for a scriptural episode is not a record of an historical event, but a parabolic revelation of truth. To see Jesus or David as an historical character is to see truth tempered to the weakness of your soul. You must see what the characters represent, rather than the characters themselves. This is true for every story in scripture, for every episode will unfold within you.

He's right about a lot of stuff but, then he just off a cliff here and there. It's clear he has some understanding of government systems, but it's also very clear he hasn't studied much political philosophy, beyond the ones that led up to the American Revolution. Which is ironic considering according to his logic, that war was rebellion unto God.

Dr. Sproul, may I respectfully remind you of St. Matthew 16:18 where Jesus tells Peter that the gates of hell will not prevail against His Church? His Church was founded on the apostles and the prophets with Jesus as the capstone. May I wonder if you have thought deeply about what exactly you have done in founding the Ligonier Ministries? In effect, what you have done is: 1. decided the gates of hell did prevail and that you, therefore had to found the "true" church ...? 2.in turn that means you believe Jesus was a false prophet in claiming the the gates of hell would not prevail. May I suggest that is a very dangerous road for you to tread? Since Jesus' Church is founded on the apostles and the prophets with Jesus as the capstone, that Church must have an unbroken apostolic succession from the time of the apostles until the present day. Jesus founded the true Church, not you. Some humility is in order? Look forward t your reply.

@Tanielu Stowers I did not know that ... I had watched a video which included him fulminating about the RCC ... not very knowledgeably let it be said (written). But that is fairly typical ... those who criticize the RCC can't get their facts straight. One amusing criticism is that Catholics pray to pictures ... but they do not accuse the Jews of praying to the wall when these sincere Jews are praying in front of the Wailing Wall. May we wonder why?
