Romans 13 is one of the most well known passages in the Bible... sort of! Christians have been silenced often when dealing with the Government by those who advance Romans 13 as the "Divine right of Kings." But how are we really supposed to understand this passage. During this sermon, Dr. Baucham orients us to Romans 13 and begins to explain what this passage means to us.

Our government school system is very flawed as is shown in this message. Of course he has pointed that out many time. How sad that hardly no one in the schools or the pulpit speaks the whole truth about the conditions that existed in the formation of our country and government. Thank you that you have done so. I would like to recommend a book I read that also gives proof to what Pastor Baucham is teaching. The New England Pulpit and the American Revolution.

In the past 15 - 20 years my understanding of Roman's chapter 13 was transformed. My eyes were opened to the balance and structure. Obedience is balanced by restraint. I am persuaded that the balance between obedience and restraint is the key to domestic tranquility. "The sword" was given for one purpose. It is not a tool for social engineering or picking winners and losers with trade, industrial, or social policy. So long as "the sword" is restrained to its biblically approved use, people are free to act. The Church can extol the highest virtues because "the sword" is not given to enforce compliance to them. Enforcement of doctrines would require that doctrines be watered down enough to avoid inciting rebellion. Governing authorities gain legitimacy because they are not using "the sword" to force some people to pay for the privileges of others. Rebellion is reduced because political application of "the sword" is deliberately minimized. Structurally, the separation of Church and state operates as a separation of powers. The authority wielding "the sword" against those who do evil is not the ecclesiastic authority whose doctrines determine which acts are evil. NOTE the immediate absurdity of the passage if those who wield "the sword" against evil also determine which acts are evil. Disobedience would become evil, and legitimize the Nuremburg defense. Paul assumes a separation of civil and ecclesistic authority in separate bodies: separation of Church and state. Church doctrines do not determine which acts are illegal, no matter how many doctrines repeat the point. State laws do not convert innocent actions into crimes (evil) no matter how many laws prohibit the act. This separation of powers permits Church and state to act as a check upon the excesses of the other. The Church checks the state via a refusal to convict in a trial by jury, and the state checks the Church via a refusal to prosecute in a bench trial. ... This structural check against tyranny is dismantled where one authority wields the sword and determines which acts are evil.

Made me think of an 8 week course my friend took in his state to become a state chaplain. One entire class was devoted to learning to pray for people without invoking personal convictions or religious affiliation. They were taught they must never pray “in Jesus Name”. It struck me that prayer in any other Name is moot. You are not praying to God of the Bible if it’s not in Jesus Name is the standard established by The Almighty Himself. So here we are folks….. and that class was 10 years ago

I find many problems in man's law. When you consider the "good ol boys club" among law enforcement and courts and how there are financial benefits to be had in keeping jails/prisons full and the fact we in the US have more people incarcerated than even strict communist China goes a long way to show "justice" isn't in the interest of quite a few of our officials. They tried hard to mandate by law a vaccine I personally don't agree with, and the day WILL come when allegiance to the beast system (and the mark) will be mandated by law lest you be imprisoned and eventually face capital punishment. God strictly tells us that this is not to be done, which at that time would directly go against man's law. Way I look at it, is we need to consider man's law under the lens of God's law and what is right and good... if the two are contrary to one another, then God's law and what is righteous to do trumps what regulations, statutes and ordinances have to say. Perhaps as counter-intuitive it may seem, politics needs to be discussed in church, but insomuch as it plays a role in our faith and what God has to say about the issues at hand. "Congress shall make no law", the last few Presidents didn't get that memo with all their EOs (last I checked the Exec branch isn't a lawmaking branch). Sounds like we and our leaders need to read our state constitutions and see where we came from as a nation and states. >>;=) If you couldn't legislate morality, then we would have a LOT less laws on the books, and our lawmakers, judges and police could all be sent home (that's called anarchy folks). The establishment's problem isn't morality or freedom of religion, but whereas that morality or faith points to God of the Bible. You sure as heck don't see Islam backing down and saying they can't have their times of prayer or live under their ways in even political arenas of life; we Christians need to be strong as they are when it comes to holding firm to our rights to live by and worship under God's ways. Regarding the latter part of this, I would like to mention that it is noted that Jesus' reign shall be seated on what was the throne of David (Jerusalem). Israel had always been God's people; their importance hasn't waned, although through grace, God has brought gentiles in with Israel, which shall be one family together under a righteous Kingdom. New Jerusalem shall bear the names of the 12 sons/tribes of Israel as well as names of the 12 apostles, indicating the way in which we all become one and together. Israel, as a locale and nation plays an important political role, but shall be anew in so many ways when Jesus claims His rightful place at the beginning of the Millennium. Dispensationalism is a new term to me, so trying to understand its nuances, but sounds our eschatology may have some differences; maybe I'll learn more about you and your church's thoughts on the matters through this series. Nonetheless, love you guys and the strong way you get what needs to be said out there.
