You got people crying out to become fully qualified electricians but it’s a nightmare to get employed to get your NVQ complete, the industry has to address this huge issue, you got adult learners that want to progress but cant because they can’t take the hit to go back on apprentice wages, whilst the country is short of electricians

V.True. I done my Training through Train4Trade Skills about 10 year ago and im still no further forward with anyone taking me on because i have no experience, i done my practicals and sat all my C&G Exams down Featherstone, i even went on todo NAPIT's EV course and am doing the 18th Edition E-Learning course in the hope that someone might take me on....but it's disheartning going to interviews when they ask what experience do you have...i look good on paper but no ones willing to invest, even when theres jobs that say EV training will be given!...It's scarey to think the amount of money ive spent thinking that im bettering my self when im just p*##ing it down the drain. i bought all my testing equip in the hope of becoming Self Employed and then there's more money having to pay to be on a competant person register and insurance and calibrating your test equip every year....so more money and then update to new course's and exam's and books...Id just like to see a company take the hit and say we'll sort you out, your what where after in terms of what Qual's you've got and we'll train ya, brush up ya skill set if ya need it, an sort you out son ;)

People can't afford to pay beyond your productivity though. To do so prices would have to increase and that's not something that the world at large is willing to tolerate. They soon will when they can't get an electrician for love nor money though. In the meantime I'd suggest doing some unpaid work experience to get your experience up. It might just get your foot in the door.

⁠@@travoltasbiplane1551 Thanks but I have a job, but there are still people that can’t get into the industry to get the NVQ complete & there are so many trainees looking for positions. I just feel there should be some sort of practical course that would allow you to complete a NVQ because if you can’t get a job your stuck & plenty of people leave the industry for this exact reason.

@@owenlerry6339 problem is the whole point of the nvq is to prove that youve been doing the job so there's no real way round that one. To be honest they probably had a lucky escape.

I did my electrical installation level 3 & 18th edition in east london and the chances of finding any employment in London for no on site experience is non existing. No wonder there is a shortage.

Went to my local supermarket this morning. They have eight EV charging points, not one in use. No surprise there then.

Because everyone is charging at home for 7.5p Kw/Hr overnight compared to 80p at supermarket and other public chargers!!!

I think you also need to ask the question: Why are so many chargers failing in the first place? Doesn't say much for the technology does it?

I don't think it's chargers failing, they're pretty dumb devices. I think it's them being damaged.

@@smoothbraindetainer not really . 50% of the Garo points I've installed are faulty when powered up . There's so many push in connections and plugs on the inside of the units that become loose during transportation to site . Stood there for hours on a few as the Garo representative tried to clear the fault and constantly asking me to add links in to bypass parts to locate the fault . They're not operating correctly straight out of the box and even the manufacturers are having issues trying to commission them

@6m03seconds you state well read from the packaging I assume, 450mm from the floor. OG Joe you know it is 450mm from floor to center line of the backback NOT the bottum and this is only for new builds. Existing dwelling can have them match the height that is already there.

I pulled out of electrical installation in the early 90’s after the Tories wrecked the economy then and never went back to it. Having the skills is great for me, but others will have to learn it for themselves.

This may be pertinent, I came across it recently and it’s genuine. Any comments? THE 'WILD WEST' OF HOME EV CHARGERS There is much work to be done to help UK householders who want to have home electric-vehicle charging points installed, if my own recent experience is typical. I am not a power engineer but have a telecommunications engineering background. My experience, and that of my approved installer, has been that a 'Wild West' situation seems to face EV purchasers as far as arranging home charging is concerned. A wide range of charging points are openly advertised, but are of varying capability and apparently - quality of design. My own attempts at making a choice of equipment have fallen foul of the local electricity distribution network operator (DNO)'s rules on load, so that my chosen 7kW single-phase capable Easee One charging point can only be run at 13A charge current until the DNO conducts a load test before sanctioning an increase. After two months my installer is still waiting for the results. I have found no mention of this load issue in any published guidance. Like me, many people may be lulled into a false sense of security when they see a 100A main fuse next to their meter. It might have been helpful if the charger had the ability to balance the EV charging load with the Vehicle specifications aren't the only thing to consider when buying an electric car measured domestic load, but that functionality on my chosen device is not available in the UK yet. The interaction of the charger control and the vehicle charge-control system also needs to be thought through. I can well imagine that this will confuse many people as there is no whole-system guidance that I have found. I have elected to make the charger dumb and let the car control the charging process through its own app and onboard systems. This works well. If the user wishes to use off-peak charging tariffs, the allowable charge rate is important because you may not be able to accrue enough low-cost electricity units to cover the more expensive ones, compared to a non-EV tariff, at other times. I currently have a fixed tariff rate that overall is cheaper than an EV tariff because I can only benefit in a limited way from the off-peak cheap electricity units due to the limited load that can be drawn. There is scope for the IET to publish a short pamphlet or online equivalent that explains all these home charger issues to a non-technical audience, so that they can have a more informed discussion with their installer. Government knew all about the skills gap coming down the pike many years ago but decided not to up-skill folk for fitting and maintaining solar and electric car chargers. It was a deliberate decision not to push solar and green technology by our masters in Parliament. Coming out of Covid we should have had thousands of trained electrical engineers & technicians fitting and maintaining solar systems and car chargers all in place for the Russian incursion, no issues with oil price hikes as we would have been virtually self sufficient. Millions of houses and businesses would have had solar panels and battery storage supporting the Grid and even providing excess power for those needing more. Snag being this impinges on big business, the very people who financially support political parties so going green was quietly shelved. HMRC would have also benefitted by an increase in personal tax revenues from these new workers, DWP would have benefitted by paying less benefits. All it needed was the will to do the right thing with government backed training, grants and low interest loans. I’m not a conspiracy theorist just a bloke who’s worked all his life taking note of how big business steers the politics of our country, it took me some time to realise politics is the business of self-interest, politicians of any party should be taking charge instead they just take advantage. Sniping at each other whilst the ship sinks isn’t the politics we need here in Great Britain. It really is time for a change, a total overhaul although I don’t see that happening in the next few years…maybe we have to sink lower ?.

There is no rush to install EV charging points no one is buying EV’s. People are realising the horrendous depreciation on new cars and now dealers are slashing prices to try and shift stock but this has knocked the second hand market for six which means people are losing thousands.

@@efixx perhaps but try selling it. They are too expensive. I tow a caravan with a 2 litre diesel Kuga I couldn’t afford the equivalent EV to replace it with. The problem with towing with an EV you have to unhitch to get on a charging point as they are usually in parking bays. To get everyone onto EV’s is a rush job and as not been thought though, the infrastructure is not there yet. Why do you think Richie Sunak as put back phasing out ICE cars.

@@rhinogooner a lot of places where caravans are towed in scotland like the west Highlands petrol stations can barely take a towed caravan anyway . Towing it still causes inconvenience to other drivers only difference is at petrol station you hold people back for 15 minutes , in a public car park you'll block off the whole area for a couple hours without unhitching lol
