Private rented sector..? What about those of us who are council tenants..? I'm one (in Scotland) and we've only ever had one inspection since the property was built in 1980, about 3 years ago. They were useless and only took 2 sockets and the cooker isolator off the wall to check behind them. Also we never did get a copy of the report. The next lot will have to do a lot better or they'll get the sharp end of my tongue 😡

A well known meter manufacturers software technicians, supposedly noticed that one city electrician submitted - 19 EICRs in one day....................I struggle to to 2 a day if travelling and FI, C1s are involved. About time a major audit was carried out on the whole certification shambles.

When I buy a house I just check the EICR is done by a genuine company, if its wrong I'll come at the guy who did it to pay for the remedials, once had a spark pick up half the cost of a rewire - I don't get how people get away with doing it badly - why are they not sued out of existence.

@@jonathanireland2913exactly what I asked at the time but no, 19 submitted for 1 days inspections. No error. Just abuse of a weak system by those that want to I guess. There is no cross referencing point so, as long as the landlord gets a pass and the "inspector" gets paid, it is what it is.

What was the inspection dates on the reports, just because they were submitted on that day, doesn’t mean the EICR’s were carried out on that day.

In 2018 I moved into a flat and was handed an EICR that had been done. About 9 months later I'm trying to get the meters swapped to gas meters and it was discovered I had reverse polarity - previous tenants stealing electricity put it back the wrong way around. I should the DNO, the meter guy and the sparky that was called out my EICR and they took details from it to have it reported. Pretty sure they thought I was the one that was stealing the electricity.

The number of people that had to not do their job properly with that macerator, from the manufacturer through to the hospital even including the poor chap that died, is simply alarming. The swiss cheese model is often cited but in this case the cheese wasn't even present.

Design of the product aside they need to find the clown that installed it that day and thought it would be ok to leave any metal item in a high risk area without any protection.

How does any electrician install a metal cased device in a kitchen of all places without making sure it's properly protected? Presumably the RCD would not only have saved his life but probably would have stopped the item from operating at all because it would never reset flagging up a serious fault.

Quite right too. An RCD would have tripped when the Water got in, way before any service would be needed. Plus, no-one would be dead. I PAT test for an Electrician now I am retired. It is very surprising how many deadly things I throw out. One company even brought the faulty items back into service still with the Earth faults. There was a terrible row in the office, then they asked me if I could fix them, to which I replied, of course I can, but I'm not allowed to tout for business. So they will have to have a word with the Man who pays me.

Hello eFixx, I think one of the biggest issues with EICRs is some electricians believe that any old installation is not complaint and therefore unsatisfactory, when in reality it should be a C3 or C2.

I’m still getting a small number of landlords who are completely ignorant about the ECR’s . I had to walk away from one customer who would not let me address another couple of dangerous situations on one his barn conversion properties that could have been resolved in a few hours. When I told him he was really required to have current tests and that 20 years ago previously tested wasn’t current he just told me it’s all nonsense and he wasn’t interested in rules. He nearly didn’t want me to replace out of date smoke alarms asking if battery ones would do instead because they are cheaper. This is what we are up against at times.

Unfortunately you can't make people spend money, in any situation. It's what makes certain jobs hard to get over the line, catches out too many people either not surveying a job properly when they price it or expecting a customer to cough up for a board swap or whatever mid way through some other works when problems arise. I'm at 1k now for a board swap with the vat, a lot of people just don't want to pay it.

Re solar panels and batteries, I'd reverse the question and ask if its worth adding batteries to a PV system without a time of use tariff. In my experience the answer is a clear NO. My 3.27 kW rated system produces next to zero spare power (after heating water via a PV diverter) for the middle 4 months of winter. On a bad day in January, there is barely enough power to run my background load at noon. With no saving for that period to offset the cost of the battery, its a non-starter.
@edc1569
@edc1569 6 ай бұрын
Using electricity to heat water with a resistive element is as close to wasting it as you could imagine. For most people you'd be best off using it to offset electricity import at 30p/unit and heat the water with gas, or just export the electricity at 15p/unit which some tariffs offer.

I charge a Battery through the night on cheap rate, then run several things on the Battery / inverter during the day. It works very well, but I have no idea how much I am saving. Currently stripping old LapTop batteries (Very carefully) and building 24 AH units. You simply MUST observe the Fire risk and disassemble them outside so you can chuck it should it go nuclear if one gets punctured.
@roberthuntley1090
@roberthuntley1090 6 ай бұрын
@@edc1569 Not in my case. I'm on a pre 2019 solar tariff, so I get paid about 22p for each unit I generate, the amount I actually export is ignored (i.e. the power is effectively free to me, since I get the same money whether I export all of it, or none of it). In a bit more detail, I get paid 19p per unit to generate it, then they make up a number and assume that I will export 50% of it and pay a further 7p per unit for that. The actual amount I export wasn't even measured until I had my smart meter fitted in 2021.

On your comment "solar panels don't usually require planning permission" - they do if the system over a certain size or go close to the roof edges, and I'd be surprised if the Holiday Inn in question wasn't over that size. Glint and glare reports are a (slightly tedious) thing, and it's perfectly possible to install solar panels close to an airport so long as you actually follow the rules properly. We've recently installed a 125kWp system on a school close to Stansted with full planning permission and going through demonstrating that it wasn't going to cause the planes a problem. Closer to Stansted than I thought as I found out when flying a drone over and the police showed up... not one of my finer moments as I wanted to melt in to the ground, but the kids all thought it was great!

Great news weekly as always Joe. Point of note Joe 3po fit that EV chargers , but did he follow the manufacturer instructions when putting the front cover back on? @Dog-whisperer7494 6 ай бұрын
@@Sparks1Plumbers0no need to be rude, yes I do know what an impact driver looks like. I have watched the video again and I happy to stand corrected. But you still can’t tighten the screws to the manufacturer’s recommended torque, also on a drill driver it is not a torque setting it’s simply a clutch that disengages the chuck when it meets a resistance. The longer the screws the higher the number it simply prevents you from driving the screws in to far , it doesn’t tighten to a set torque. So instead of being rude to me maybe you should learn how to use a drill driver correctly.
