Critical Mas(s) with Massad Ayoob is a show that provides expert analysis over a wide range of contemporaneous topics related to civilian and law enforcement self-defense, the use of force, and second amendment issues, provided by a renowned and established author with a career spanning decades in training law enforcement officers and the public at large, who is frequently called upon to provide expert witness testimony.
ABOUT MASSAD AYOOB:
Massad Ayoob has been handgun editor of GUNS magazine and law enforcement columnist for AMERICAN HANDGUNNER since the 1970s and has published thousands of articles in gun magazines, martial arts publications, and law enforcement journals. He is the author of some twenty books on firearms, self-defense, and related topics, including “In the Gravest Extreme” and “Deadly Force,” widely considered to be authoritative texts on the topic of the use of lethal force.
The winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner of the Year Award in 1998, Mas has won several states and regional handgun shooting championships. Ayoob was the first person to earn the title of Five Gun Master in the International Defensive Pistol Association. He is the current President of the Second Amendment Foundation. He served 19 years as chair of the Firearms Committee of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, and several years as a member of the Advisory Board of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association. In addition to teaching for those groups, he has also taught
for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors and the International Homicide Investigators seminars.
Mas has received judicial recognition as an expert witness for the courts in weapons and shooting cases since 1979, and served as a fully sworn and empowered, part-time police officer for 43 years, mostly at supervisor rank. Ayoob founded the Lethal Force Institute in 1981 and served as its director until 2009, and now trains through Massad Ayoob Group. He has
appeared on CLE-TV delivering continuing legal education for attorneys, through the American Law Institute and American Bar Association, and has been retained to train attorneys to handle deadly force cases through the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. Ayoob served for two
years as co-vice chair of the Forensic Evidence Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also appeared in each episode of Personal Defense TV (Sportsman’s Channel).

I'm a former police officer, firefighter and medic. I offered the schools in my area to be their Resource Officer - and all turned me down because "we don't need this", "we can't pay you" (I would have volunteered), "it scares the kids", "the parents won't like a militant presence in the school". There you have it. But they have no problems sending billions to foreign countries protecting foreign people

My school back in 1971, a junior high school had a Tucson Police resource officer. Without any intimidation he steered me in the right direction when I was 13. Not sure if he knew it, but God did, I hope I see that man in heaven when I get there!! He was also directly involved in my positive attitude of police officers so much that I served with the Air Force Security Police for 6 years, then served with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for another 20 years. In 1971 we had no fear of someone coming on the campus armed to kill us kids, it was not even a thought.

I am from Australia. You nuts in USA are crazy. We dont have 'resource officers'. I had to look it up. You guys have police officers at school full time during a school day. That is a joke. We would have police officers come maybe once or twice a year to do a talk for 15mins about 'staying out of trouble' etc. We dont have a cop on school property 9am - 3pm. everyday. That is ridiculous and a waste of resources.

@@random19911004 Gang violence was bad in the 80s-90s like you would have gangs of all sorts in one highschool and next thing you know they throwing fists or stabbing during school and worst case scenario shooting them right outside the school. It's more tone down now since everyone is trying to make money with mostly gang violence centralized around in-fighting rather than warring with other gangs and the zones of "conducting" has already been established in the early 2000s.

I was present immediately after a school shooting very early in my career. As an EMT, we had only one victim to treat, who unfortunately died from a close quarters shotgun blast. The reason its not news at the Acushnet Elementary School in Acushnet MA (back in 1998 I think it was) is very simply because the principal, seeing the gunman walk by his office and head towards the library full of kids, TACKLED the suspect and held him while others removed the firearm. Spot on, only way to stop violence is to be prepared to do violence.

1993 to be exact. In December 2001, Washington Post wrote up your neighboring town, New Bedford, as an example of how the system worked. The Post's observation, and I tend to agree, the city is so hardscrabble, expecially back then, that the attitude was not the "it would never happen here" of a more wealthy district. New Bedford was more like "damn right it could happen here, it WILL happen here, if it can happen aywhere it could happen here". So they prepared for it. Active shooter drills, being on the lookout for suspicious behavior and all that. Sure enough, they found the suspicious behavior, student mouthing off about violence. Police investigated, and they found the weapons and explosives. The kids involved were interviewed, and like Massad Ayoub points out here, it's important NOT to give these kids publicity. The kids involved said they wanted to outdo Columbine.

Having a firearm is only part of the equation. The answers comes when you get the training. Standing at a gun range shooting a static target doesn’t replicate a gun fight. Seek out kinetic combat pistol training. . As a person who has been a gun person my entire life, I thought I understood self-defense with a handgun. The truth of the matter is I didn’t know how much I didn’t know. Not only will you learn a lot but you’ll have a lot of fun. “We never rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training”

In Australia we have basically no guns available to protect us. This was made apparent when a mentally ill man killed and stabbed many victims in a affluent Sydney area Westfield shopping mall. Just on how Jewish people in Sydney schools tackle any threat you have explained it. They employ armed guards and security who are trained to tackle all sorts of threats. It's the absolute last place you would go to cause trouble. But sadly just about everything else in Australia has nil protection.

I generally agree with Massad but I think he is totally wrong here. Most teachers don't want to carry weapons, and we can't(and shouldn't) force people uncomfortable with carrying a weapon, to carry a weapon. Since schools already have armed resource officers and that isn't enough, it is hard to believe that a random teacher here or there who is armed would make a difference. So who exactly are we talking about giving permission to carry guns into school to? The children?

You make many points, sir. I'm retired after 32 years LE, the last 6 spent in school safety and security methods within my department and the surrounding school districts. Dead on with the AR-15, first try. Does quite well with pistols, despite my poor training. She's hardly the bravest soul, but if she were armed and minimally trained, and there was a threat to her classroom, god help the shooter.

I am a retired music teacher and a Navy Veteran.. I've been trained as a NRA Pistol Instructor and attained Marksman upon completing the 250 Pistol course offered by Gunsite Academy. I always asked the RSO if he would like assistance if the situation was dire. I was always prepared for this and subscribed to all local laws in doing so. I suggested that teachers who are military veterans be given the opportunity to train as Auxiliary Police officers allowing them to carry in schools legally. 6 APOs could accomplish the goal of keeping students safe because of three advantages, 1) they know the foot print of the school., 2) they know the students who will take instruction from them as a matter of course, 3) and their training is consistent with the police in that jurisdiction. As with your mention of the principal at Sandy Hook, teachers have demonstrated over and over again their willingness to protect their students with the same dedication the Secret Service protects our Presidents. They should be armed and once this becomes public knowledge, the shootings would end because the cowardly bastards would find another soft target. I developed this in 2012 and the administrators are as cowardly as the evil shooters.

FOLKS THIS IS IMPORTANT. The US Post Office had workers in the 1980's that came in and shot the place up. The term "Going Postal" was coined. You don't here that term anymore and there is a primary reason. When was the last Postal Gun incident you remember? The USPS is the largest employer in the US. They hired experts and formulated a policy as pioneers. The process was to make sure supervisors were keeping a pulse on the postal workers with a report a problem atmosphere. "Get them while they are simmering, not boiling over" scenario. Workers were told that there is help if you feel stressed out and actually delivered on that commitment. Fast forward over the years including industry experience. Interviews of coworkers have shown that 80% of these people that shot up the place had "pre-spill over" - meaning they display their deep frustrations to other workers long before they acted. Even comments like "someday people will feel how bad it is"... "Someday he will be the crying bitch" ... almost like a vailed promise. The point is, "Workplace Violence Prevention" is actually standardized now and its very real in most large companies. It's a program that has saved literally countless lives and worker productivity is preserved and no emotional damage with an early intervention system - before the pot boils over. Call it the "PRESERVE THE FAMILY - DEATH PREVENTION BY MAD GUN BILL". WE THE PEOPLE NEED PRE-VIOLENCE PREVENTION RESURCES AND PUBLIC ACCESS TO HELP WITHOUT FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS AS GATED ACCESS. We absolutely can do better fand we should do better by taking written stances. We could all just sit down today and write your Federal Congressperson and Senators and local State Representatives (copy what I wrote if you like). One could say at the beginning and end as a question: "May I ask, what is your position on this and are you willing to seriously address a Bill this active violence and death prevention as an absolute first priority"? Folks. If we keep pushing on the system hard and in force, we potentially have so much more to gain. Is this a bad idea?

This is especially true after the government overreach we saw 2020-2022 bc of the corona.

My work has a "no firearms" sign. The illustration is of a Walther p.38 I think they're expecting some 99 year old Argentinan to come in and gun us down.

Reminds me of the time quite a few years back, when I was Target practicing down at red's gun range in Oak Hill Tx. I asked one of the employees "Do you think anyone could pull a armed robbery here, and make it out the door?" His response was "Well, he might make it out the door, but he would not make it down the street for a block."

Mr Ayoob, your videos are a wealth of knowledge. Living in a right to carry state now coming from super anti gun NY I couldn’t agree with this video more. I have been saying these very same things about gun free zones. There should be armed security in every school, hospital , public events etc . When people see a camera they tend to behave, same goes for knowing there is someone armed . Keep these videos coming . Much respect to you sir.

@@yankeecornbread8464 My opinion is that these so called government officials need to be removed from their office, arrested and charged with the deaths of those they failed to protect. They should get life in prison with no chance of parole or early release, disarmed because they would be felons, and allowed to live but only to face Almighty God when they die, and be reminded of this the rest of their pathetic lives!!!

Maybe if schools gave Hunter a million bucks, with 10% going to 'the big guy', they would get lots of defense aid from the government.

Really appreciate you Mr Ayoob. While not one to go in for "salty" language (doubt you are either when not called for) you words were precisely on point here. A wake up call is way overdue, the tragic examples you raise go back too many years while we as a society do less than nothing. God help us and God bless you sir!

This is by far the most consequential and effective statement that I've seen on this topic. Your directness, thoughtfulness and honesty are refreshing, and very much appreciated. I know that those who believe the solution to school shootings is to ban "assault rifles" are deluded, because when I was in high school a half century ago, the were no mass shootings in schools. I was in San Francisco then, a large city with its fair share of violent crime, but never with anything like that kind of violence at our school. And "assault rifles" were available then; I knew someone who had an AR-15 in his collection, and had obtained it quite easily. No: it's not the guns. Something else has changed, changed drastically. I recently got a CPL in Michigan, where I now live. But, ironically, since my work is in churches or schools, state law prohibits firearms in exactly those places. So I can't carry on the job -- or even leave my gun in my car in the parking lot (not that I would!), as those lots are part of school or church property. It has really made me wonder about the risk of mass shootings in those places, and how frustrating it is not to be allowed to participate in counteracting that risk.

I am a school teacher and a gun owner. There are retired police officer packing at my school in NJ. I am torn. If I was allowed to carry (I think I am a damn good shot too). The fear is if the Adrenalin is pumping and I shoot and miss and injured an innocent child I’d carry that with me? To me that’s a scary thought.

I have to say. I almost didn't watch this video because I didn't believe in arming in teachers. I no longer believe that after watching this video. If teachers are willing to train to the same standards that police are required to do. I wholeheartedly agree with arming them. Well presented Mas, as usual.
