My headcanon is Franco Nero's Lancelot is the DIRECT ANCESTOR of GASTON. "Had I been made the partner of Eve We'd be in Eden still! No one beats Lancelot Can't defeat Lancelot There's a lot of brave knights Down 6 feet cause they fought The best and the bravest chevalier As you see I've got biceps to spare! Franco Nero singing in the Alcázar of Segovia... no, they had him dubbed, despite of him being fluent in English. He made a great Lancelot in this great musical. All the exterior shots of Camelot were done in Castille, Spain, in 1966/67.

Loved this segment! The song fit Sir Lancelot perfectly, and ironically, tragically, he fell short of those virtues, which to Camelot's fall.

One plot hole is that, in "Camelot" (although not in the original Arthurian legends), Lancelot claims in a later scene that his great strength "comes from [his] purity". So, logically, when he commits his multi-tiered sin with Guinevere, he should lose his strength, like Samson with his hair cut, and be helpless before his enemies. Maybe the authors were trying to suggest that he had been kidding himself all along about his status as God's chosen champion (which is certainly consistent with his inflated ego, as exemplified in this song), and was never anything but a man -- even if an exceptionally strong one. That sin really WAS a doozy, by medieval standards: adultery with a married woman, betrayal of his best friend, violation of the code of hospitality, treason by having illicit sex with a queen, and the breaking of his feudal duty to his liege lord. One reason that it gave so many great authors so much material.

And yet we believe it when Arthur is glad to see Lancelot rescue Guinevere and make good their escape. Is there any story anywhere that is so disturbing and compelling at the same time?

It is not a hole in the plot. I think that it was one of the points of the story. No matter how much he trained himself to be pure, he was still subject to human frailties and temptations. He was not as infallible as he thought he was

It's actually a plot point. The whole concept of stuff like trial by combat is that God wouldn't let the wrong side prevail. So knights who won were automatically "right", i.e. "Might makes right". While there are plenty of contradictions, of course, part of the Arthurian legend, particularly the more recent iterations acknowledge the flaws and push "Might For Right", instead. The idea is that power should be used in service of just causes from a moral perspective. Ironically, that also was a problem because so long as Lancelot could defeat any foe, he was automatically deemed in the right. When trials and evidence come into play, which we consider more just, he's screwed.

@@andreabanuelosavila2317 There are times when courtly love is considered a romantic ideal for knights. "Camelot" doesn't have that mindset. It interprets Lance as an overconfident braggart who thinks of himself to be perfect, yet it's his own carelessness with a married woman that ends up destroying a kingdom. In contrast, Arthur is interpreted as a sympathetic person who loves his wife and best friend to a fault. Lance and Jenny break up in the end because she's come to realize that the relationship's wrong. It's clear this movie doesn't think highly about courtly love at all.

Saw Camelot while in college at movie night in the UC. Sound was synchronized about 15 seconds after they spoke but have loved this song ever since. Still pne of my favorite songs because of its modesty.

Well, he actually does initially. It's the guilt over his passion for Guinevere which dishonors him -- and yet in the medieval legends, Lancelot is still so superior to other knights that his son Galahad becomes what he originally aspired to be and as a result is the knight who finds the Holy Grail.

He's so laughably overconfident here that it's great fun to watch. But it's sad too. But do they fail just because this one man splits the company with his sin, or because mankind himself is just too flawed to achieve the success Camelot was attempting? In 2021, I think many would say that humans are incapable of any great ambition.

My feeling is that Camelot, like all great civilizations, would have fallen with or without Lancelot 's betrayal. Because humans cannot sustain peace nor cease their eternal pettiness. The triangle between Lancelot, Guinevere and King Arthur simply destroys Arthur's will to persevere. This is my belief.

Incidentally, there's a goof in the sequence just before this song: in one shot of Arthur knighting members of the Round Table, Pellinore is standing next to him even though he hasn't entered the story yet. Oops.

I love Julie Andrews and her singing, but Vanessa Redgrave does have a bit more of an edge that supports the character. It's almost hard to believe Julie when she sings "Shall a feud not begin for me, shall kith not kill their kin for me."

@@tabfiend Yes, a brilliant bit of humor that some did not pick up on I guess. G - "Am I to understand that you have no flaw at all?" L- " I do have one flaw my Queen. It is mi Humilite" (spoken with a thick French accent, accentuating the last syllable of Humilite). then later, she asks him if he has wrestled with humility lately. A deeply biting, beautiful, sarcastic thrust which Arthur then skillfully deflects to save Lancelot's face. Amazed that clip does not appear anywhere in a google search.

That is the point of the song, dear Josie. He is a braggart but also a man of goodness, purity and kindness. This is shown of course in the duelling section of the film. He soon comes "down to earth".

You're all missing the point. In his purity, his enumerating his virtues is actually not bragging. He was explaining why he needed to serve at the Round Table. That's why it was funny. In his innocence, he doesn't realize how annoying he is...which is why the queen loathed him at first. That's why he doesn't understand any of her insults. Watch the movie.

Lancelot is really not bragging, though; he's citing his own virtues like a job applicant. These make him an excellent choice to serve at the Round Table. He is so virtuous and innocent of any pride that he doesn't see it as bragging. This is a knight who has worked extremely hard and deprived himself of much in order to become as godly as possible. It was considered virtuous at one time to deprive oneself and work extremely hard at being better. To be less animalistic, base or human... Also, you have to take into consideration that he's traveling alone with his page, so he's actually having a conversation with himself and thinking out loud.

josie Kilkenny: That is part of his insufferable character, which is why he’s ridiculed on arriving at Camelot. In the book he’s also supposed to be ugly as shit. It lessens the story when you have men like Nero and Goulet play the role.
