A lot of people misunderstand this song. They think the message is "It seems impossible, but if you try you might succeed." To me, no, the message is "When there's no way you can possibly succeed, try anyway. You'll fail, but so what? You _will_ make the world a better place; that alone makes it worth doing."

@Evil Monkey It's more poetic and thus poignant to phrase it as he did. I wholeheartedly agree with his wording. That said, one could also see it as not mattering if one's actions even succeed at all a la Prof. Bernado de la Paz's philosophy on revolution. The song itself is filled with seemingly contradictory descriptions, which make sense if the philosophy is that treating the world not as how it is but how it should be, though patently absurd and by all rights doomed before attempted, is nonetheless a morally righteous and commendable manner of dealing with the world.

Before my grandfather died, he left to me a classic copy of Don Quijote written in Spanish. Thank you abuelo, for sending me on my quest. Until we meet again, I'll bear the unbearable sorrow and do my duty. To anyone who is listening out there, there is a light, go find it, that is your quest!

Since you had a copy of Don Quixote I recommend you read it since people always get the message wrong. Don quixote is a raving lunatic that makes things worse everywhere he goes. He is the equivalent of a man wearing trashbags that will cut you since you're one of the lizard people. While he goes around harassing the countryside in order to live out his fantasies actually adventures are going on. While people pour their hearts out to him he interrupts to complain about romance books and why 2 characters shouldn't be together. While actually noble women are in need of help he is fighting a procession of nuns. While people are fighting for honor and love he is attacking a windmill. All this to say the actual meaning of don quixote is the opposite of what has been popularized. When you live in a fantasy world you miss out on the real life adventures of the people around you. The book is 400 years old so it was bound to go through some changes but somewhere along the way the message got reversed. Still an amazing book that is surprisingly modern with it's view on race and women.

This movie with Peter O’toole inspired me my entire life to significant success and a love for life I never knew until I heard these wonderful soul moving songs. 1972- I was 17. Today I’m 67 and these songs still move me to look forward to my second 60 years of life.

Probably my favorite story of all time. It is about an old man's attempt to bring some meaning to his life and how the world around him calls him crazy for doing so. All great men and women have followed that path. They dreamt the impossible dream and were scorned and often ridiculed for it. But they persevered and proved that pursuing worthy goals was more important that accomplishing mundane ones.

"Man of La Mancha" is based on one of the greatest books ever written, _Don Quixote de La Mancha_, a 17th century Spanish epic novel by Miguel de Cervantes and one of the most read and translated books in history. It is considered the first modern novel. Don Quixote is an iconic figure in Spain and much of Latin America, countries and I think required reading in most schools. A not so easy to read book, but a great story

@@petele345 at my high school in New England, US it was required reading. Not the whole book, but key parts and we got to watch this wonderful movie afterward. Endlessly entertaining but also a lot to think about. And as the world changes, it seems to only age better.

This is the song of a true believer. I became this man - against my better judgement. It is painful - to believe you can actually help a person - to help himself. This play tells the story of a brave sane man - living in an insane world.

Man, I was in a pretty bad place years ago. Doing some bad things, going nowhere, but then my Spanish teacher had us watch this one class during the end of the year. It inspired me to leave behind things that were holding me back. It still helps me when I feel like I'm nothing and going nowhere.

Agreed, but small-venue live theatrical performances are the best way to experience "Man of La Mancha." (I do own and enjoy the movie, but try to catch a local live performance whenever one is available.)

No one will ever know how important this novel was. It has affected such great painters as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, and many great artist from all over the world to paint him and Sancho Panza. Recently in Madrid there was a sellout crowd to watch Man of La Mancha. He was the greatest character in all of Spanish Literature. Don Quixote.

Hi Joe, very perceptive of you! i have CP and despite that by sheer will managed to work for 43 yrs while in physical hell. i found a wonderful much younger lady and have 4 awesome children. it was not easy. my drs said as a child that inwould not to be able to live a normal life. they underestimated me. many part of it were not fun; the pain in particular. just did a John Wayne True Grit and got thru it knowing i had to for my kids.

I think the symbolism in the middle of the line “onward to glory we go” is fascinating. Quixote reaches glory and immortality as he dies. Sancho and Dulcinea are left to carry out the dream, the work, and the tale of the Man of La Mancha.

Peter O'Toole is the perfect Don Quixote. The first time I saw Man of La Mancha, it was put on by a tiny local theater company in an old wooden church. It was just a little local troupe, but they did a bang up job. The guy who played Don Quixote was amazing. At the end, half of us in the audience were in tears. I tell people about this play. Its like when you've read a really, really good book.

An Oscar isn't the "unreachable goal". Many do achieve it. The goal would be "to put a smile and a tear on the face of everyone". A goal that no one could do, but if we are inspired by him, we might strive for it ourselves. While no ONE could do it, enough of us trying may change that, and we can achieve it together.

Don Quixote tells us that we should not be too weak to be carried along by this grim practical world, but rather we should be strong enough, even if there is no strength left in us, to strive for what is ideal.

Don Quixote is a satire on chivalry. Or, at least, the works derived from it. Don Quixote left a boy to get whipped without even questioning the farm hands loyalty. He was, also, in that great work, mad. If anything I think it suggests simplicity, rather then your interpretation.

This is superb and so is the book. Cervantes did a wonderful job. Don Quixote is a long book but very readable unlike so many other so-called "classics". The "Impossible Dream" accurately fits the premise of the book.

This man among men who gave the world Lawrence of Arabia, Peter O'Toole has gone from us. Though his performance in this epic film was regarded as among the greatest ever seen, Mr. O'Toole captured and held my heart with his performance as Miguel De Cervantes' addled hero, Don Quixote De La Mancha. On that wet and miserable Sunday afternoon in 1979, I witnessed this magnificent rendering, full of humanity and passion. Mr. O'Toole your performance awakened in me a lifelong desire to help others. The world is made ever larger for your contribution. For that, I am most gratefully in your debt. We will not see the likes of you again.

To me this song is one of the greatest of all time. We sang it in our ceremony when I graduated from 6th & 9th grades, and later at high school, that last time I provided the lyrics since I had memorized it from the first ceremony. Puerto Rican actors José Ferrer and Raúl Juliá, as well as Richard Kiley and Brian Stokes Mitchell, among others, have starred successfully in the stage play.

I had the great honor to see Richard Kiley perform this at The Academy of Music with my parents.I was a young woman, and sat at the edge of my chair, sobbing. This song always makes me think of my Prescious Father, who loved this song. Among a million other things, I owe him the love of beautiful music....

I like how O'Toole played the death scene here. A common thing I've seen other actors do is they yell out as he dies or yell out as they collapse and gasp out the last few words. I like how O'Toole has Alonso/Don Quixote just slip away while still in his dream.

This forgotten film contains one of Peter O'Toole's great performances. I went to see this movie a number of times back in 1972. Britain has a tradition, sadly dying out now, of great scene chewing performers. Peter was up there with the best. RIP.

He was/is my favorite actor of all time! I fell deeply in love w/ him when I was just 13 and now 32 years later I still love him. His passing has left a huge hole in my heart and his absence from future films will also leave a huge gaping hole. He was one of the best actors of all time and the deathbed scene from Man of La Mancha is one of the most moving. Rest in peace sweet rogue... I mean prince!

I got to see this play twice once when I was in 5th or 6th grade it touched me back then. The second time was a couple of years ago at my local community college. Both times I wept like a baby because I strongly believe this is how we should live our lives by seeing the person for who they are on the inside rather than their appearance on the outside

I was in the musical in high school in 1970. I remember this song so vividly, heard it over m over again. I always sang it underneath my breathe during the practices n live performances. Great memories. I also enjoy singing it in karaoke. One of my All Time Favorites. Dont care who sings it.😇

I can not watch this without getting "the feels". Been that way for since I saw the show at the ANTA Washington Square Theatre in NYC in 1968. What I love about the film production, (besides everything) is the casting of Sophia Loren. She was simply perfect for this.

I can´t believe critics destroyed this film when it was premiered. It is wonderful. Sophia Loren always honoured the screen with her presence. Peter OToole was great and his costume as Don Quixote is amazing. And the music! No words.

I was so Blessed to have had a Mother that brought us to so many Broadway shows, Seeing all the Classic Movies, Classical, Opera, Museums, Ballets, Rockefeller Center, Horsemanship, Boating,, Shooting, Sports, Art and loving me enough to allow me to hate her through her discipline to become a decent, moral, Christian person. You never realize how truly blessed you were to have been raised with so many amazing things until many years after. Thank you to my Blessed Mother. I have read comments on other versions of this great song that disparage Peter's version. I see no problem with his take/delivery. This is one of those songs that need 'acting', you have to believe what you are singing & sell it to an audience. Peter did this, I am happy.

I'd forgotten this movie for so many years. I was a young man when it was released. Peter O'Toole was one of the greatest actors of his era and Sofia Loren was a goddess. They broke the mold when they made her. What's suddenly interesting for me is that my newest granddaughter is named Sofia. (8 months old) Cosmic.
