@@MikeDawson1 sure. He was insisting that a DBT was impossible and that the cables HAD to be physically swapped out. I told him that it would be easy to design a test where the cables would not need to be swapped out. He insisted that ANY switching device would induce noise. So from there I asked him to tell me what system he was planning to use and where in the system he wanted to test the power cords. He refused to answer that. I suspect he refused to answer that to avoid me designing a test using his system that would avoid physical cable swaps. I asked him for evidence that every switching device would induce noise. He refused to respond to that. I asked him how a switching device would mask the benefits of his power cord? he refused to answer that. I asked him if he understood that every preamp was in effect a switching device and did he warn his customers that use preamps in their systems that the benefits of his power cords would be masked by their preamps. At this point he resorted to ad hominem retorts with no responses to any of my questions and points. It became quite clear that he was not willing to do any "blind" listening test that he did not fully control and did not have a physical cable swap.

I wonder if he’s truly being intentionally deceptive or whether it’s the sort of cognitive dissonance taking over when one asks an awkward questions to a religious person which point out the faults in their position. Not necessarily deliberate but faulty epistemology.

Oooor do you think he is very quick to tell his customers just how much his power cords will help improve the sound of their systems when used on their preamps? Of course he refused to disclose what the system would actually be which prevented me from offering any such solutions to what he claims was an unsolvable problem. I don't think he believes any of his B.S. If he did why would he refuse to even disclose the system he was planning to use?

@Jeremy Jeremy. I really don’t want to get into with someone who wants to believe as oppose to measure. But as to my dealing with circuits, I’m a retired EE with experience in everything from controls to 132k volts. I’ve worked in many industrial plants and seen the sun come up in everyone helping electricians troubleshoot a problem. My now expired PE license didn’t make me an expert in anything but it did give an indication of my willingness to search for an answer be it from literature are experts in the field. My natural tendency is too strongly question people’s arguments when they use the phrase “it’s common knowledge” as proofs of their argument. After all, like the mechanic at one repair shop said, “it’s common knowledge” that GM developed a carburetor that could get 100 miles to the gallon but the oil companies purchased the patent to keep it off the market. Everyone knows it’s common knowledge.

My patience run out as well, now I am on my own and shop and listen with my own ears.

Actually, he's apparently pretty competent at passive speaker system design and room treatment -- beyond that, he's as ignorant as the average audiophool and/or a snake oil monger.

Not a huge difference. Definitely not worth mutilating a beautiful perfectly functional speaker, voiding your warranty and potentially damaging your product. You may not even like the change and you can't return stuff you soldered and crimped. Think, he's changing some coils and capacitors but it is the same tweeter, woofer and speaker design. It will be essentially the same speaker. Waste of money.

I try not to. There are so many excellent DACs out there. Just look at my latest reviews. You can go from $80 up to about $500. For a whole system, best to post in ASR forum and get feedback from membership.

That kind of indirect audibility is possible... you need intermodulation somewhere in the sound chain. An ideal, linear system follows the "superposition principle" which means it doesn't allow separate frequencies to interact. (The pattern of light reflecting off ripples is very non-linear.) An ideal, clean sound reproduction system is linear so it won't make ultrasound any more audible than it currently is. Real-world systems are pretty close, look at THD+N statistics and so on. Ears as well: at normal sound pressure levels they're pretty linear. High levels can cause distortion and intermodulation. But you'd need unnaturally loud ultrasound before that effect can be perceived. The other issue is that intermodulation with ultrasound usually sounds bad. When I'm doing something creative with ring modulation or distortion one of the dangers is overdoing it and producing a result that's harsh/cold. The fact that you can do distortion and intermodulation with high frequencies and get a mathematically correct result is a key feature of "cold, digital" sound. Analog equipment with those properties can produce a similar sound quality - the Maestro RM-1 is an excellent example. Limiting the input frequencies tames non-linear effects and is a big part of making them sound warm or gooey or pick your favorite adjective for good tube-like tone. So the kinds of audio processing that would generate a lot of ultrasound and make it indirectly audible are almost always combined with low-pass filters to crop it out instead. So even if you're listening to lossless 96k-sample content that can go past 40kHz, it probably *isn't* mastered with significant 30kHz energy. Instead that extra bandwidth makes it possible to use filters that are deeper or more gentle or both. Btw, the neural pathways that compare phase between ears can't synchronize with frequencies above about 700-800 Hz. This isn't too relevant, but it's a good example of how human hearing isn't as good as we like to believe sometimes.

If that is in the content, then the interference pattern is also baked into the content. If it is not in the content, then the intermodulation gets caused by distortions in the system. That would then call for not playing the high frequencies! At any rate, in music, the level of high frequencies is extremely small so any such intermodulation would be in the noise.

@@AudioScienceReview Yes that is very logical, what I am trying to find out, is why has nearly nobody any difficulty to hear if it is a real band (around the corner 3 bars down) vs a high end no noise $3 million system. It can't be due to the noise, there is none, it can not be because of the high fidelity that the band makes 3 houses down out of their windows and lol, it can't be because of the cables:-) So what is it, we can't hear pat 20kHz but still is it super simple to detect real music vs a music system.

Yep. But the burden of proof is on Danny. I'm pretty certain they do not make any audible difference. If they did, it would be measurable, and he'd have posted the measurements. The issue with scammers and charlatans is that not everything they say is false. For instance, the crossover upgrades often seem like genuine improvements; measurements based, FR apparently improved. BUT. Ultra expensive components used, which all may or may not be beneficial, so redesign likely beneficial, but I'm certain you could replace components with normal ones and it wouldn't be pass a DBT.

But don't throw it out - it's a miraculously good radio receiver that needs to be studied. If you can figure out what's happening, the resulting patents will be worth enough to buy a lifetime supply of over-built, cryo-preserved power and microphone cables.

I too liked his early videos talking about crossovers and such. As you, it did not take long to see his other side which run completely counter to his measurement focused speaker/crossover work.

Interesting - can someone be really good at doing something, say like being the President of the US, and then, be completely useless and broken in his personal life? I’ve seen that happen multiple times. Danny is an excellent DIY speaker designer who puts a good product out for a budget price. Is he out there on some of this other stuff? Yep. @@jon1810 Crossovers and cables are based on the same science. You can't be good in crossovers (and wires between parts and wires to the drivers) and at the same time an idiot about cables. Danny shows measurements for his work on his crossovers. But for cables no measurements. That makes no sense at all!

Now - if you’re saying that the parts and wires being used after the science is conducted make no difference, ok then (cheap parts or “cheese” as Danny calls it vs. Premium parts). He still does design the crossover the correct way with measurements (unlike the guys who do it “all by ear”)
