Hey everybody, I hope you're have a great Sunday. Today I'm checking in from the GT2RS MR on track to talk more about the situation with my blown GR Yaris motor. I hope you enjoy and if you have any questions let me know in the comments section below :-)
00:00 Hey everybody I'm Robert!
00:23 Stuck in the GT2RS MR...
00:33 Where are we at with the Yaris motor?...
01:30 Unloading the car at Toyota (Shoutout to Popup Nurburg)
01:47 Were our predictions correct?
02:25 Bits and pieces everywhere!
03:39 This is where I pulled off the track.
04:24 What did I actually damage?
05:06 And THIS is why we slow down here!!!!
05:39 Houston we have a problem...
06:11 So why did the motor break?
08:49 Thanks for the support, it's been great!
09:40 Enjoy the rest of the lap and the sounds of TF.

Another great relaxed video. The track looks beautiful in the rain. With the GR being such a popular choice round the track I guess it would be in the interest of a local engine builder to take this on if it doesn't work out with the manufacturer. as George said though, making sure every bit of shrapnel is out will be tricky. No doubt someone somewhere is hastily working on a top-end upgrade kit for this engine. There will be lots more where that came from. Thanks agin.

Thank you for sharing the information about the GR Yaris status. If you wouldn't say it, I would have thought that you just changed the recording view. No problem with that (as it really existed). It reminded me of those videos from the 80s/90s. Cool at that time, cool now. Not a good audio quality? I could hear the engine. Not sharp? I could hear you talking and the engine. The fact that the audio was sensitive to high revs, means the engine is loud. That's cool.

Thanks for the update Robert, it will be interesting to find out if there are any signs of impact to all the pistons. As an engine builder, I reckon the valve hit the piston at the over-rev, and this flexed/damaged the rocker roller, allowing needles to escape, which eventually allowed it to migrate and fall off causing the other damage. I’ve had rockers come off before, and it’s a lottery whether they hit anything critical and cause damage! I think it would be prudent to remove the head and check for any signs of piston to valve contact in the other cylinders, because if one has impacted, chances are, another has also. Look on the bright side, at least there are only 3 cylinders to worry about, that’s 25% less worry than normal on an engine of this type!! Really enjoying your channel BTW, keep up the good work :-)

For the record. I thought it was a good video. I actually enjoyed that you motored on when the gopro tanked. I thought it was a great catch that you realized that there was a backup camera on board and actually acknowledged the sound would be compromised. I remember thinking 2 thoughts about gopro. 1. It is unacceptable that these things overheat and fail. It would be like your GT2RS MR generally only running for 2/3 of a lap before overheating., and 2. Surprised how much better the gopro sound is and marveled at how these little things manage to do what they do when they work.

The question is how the rocker bearings got impacted by the over rev, guess the head hit the valve. And if so, it might have happened on the other two cylinders as well. I would try to inspect the head, and if it does not show any sign of damage, then it’s likely other cylinders are ok and I would take the risk to simply change the impacted parts, perhaps with additional regular inspections. If piston was damaged, then the entire motor probably needs to be checked in details.
@techevo
@techevo 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my guess as an engine builder is the piston hit the valve at the over-rev, and this impact damaged the rocker, which eventually failed. Chances are, the other cylinders did the same, but only one failed.
@warrenlucier5796
@warrenlucier5796 3 жыл бұрын
Having viewed your other video on this incident and listening to your conversations on the matter I come to the conclusion for the rocker failure came due to valve float. When the valve float occurred the rocker arm became misaligned and thus a side load on the needle bearings caused them push things apart. Running the engine more only worsened the damage that was started.

Thanks for the ride. I know people would suggest a car enthusiast get an oil cooler or turbo inter-cooler but for you Robert I think you need a GOPRO INTERCOOLER! I think it might be a worse situation than an overrev! Keep the faith and keep on driving forward. Enjoying all that is Nurburgring . BTW, if you had “someone” rebuild the GR, would you consider forged internals or some strengthening measures?

@JamesDyer90 3 жыл бұрын
I wonder if it would have been possible to have any findings if the valvetrain was inspected before the complete failure but after the missed shift. All of us that track the GR Yaris might have to keep a few rocker assemblies in the glovebox!

The truth is that he has was too distracted while applying tanning lotion to pay attention = money shift every time = massive page views. It’s a real issue to the point where Robert should start every video with a PSA about the risks of driving and tanning at the same time. The auto community needs this, Robert!!! Before you know it, the entire car world will move to some sort of automated transmission that won’t allow a money shift...wait?!?

I think if you bring down the lower khz levels on the audio when editing, it will help the audio on the recorder. You won't be able to do much with the clipping, but for people with headphones on, the bass of the car is overpowering after the 4k footage shat the bed. As for the GoPro. I do have my woes with them as well. I find the reliability of my DJI camera better but I like the GoPro image more. I have seen you complaining about overheating a couple of times. Do you by any chance charge while recording ? I found that to be a big no-no with my GoPro 7. If I run simply on battery power it has yet to overheat and shutdown on me. I just got one of those "pocket" size multi battery chargers and just rotate the batteries. Has worked well for me so far. #influencer pro tips

Hey Robert, quick question: Did you narrow it down to the intake valve because they open longer and deeper than the exhaust valve, thus taking more load? Because in the Studio Video you were quite confident that it would be intake and you were right.

Hi Robert. Regarding the camera, since I went to DJI Osmo Action no more headache about overheating or cutting the recordings anymore. I've been using it for 2 years and still going perfect, also they have been updating the firmware often to keep it nice and healthy. Please consider the try. Also I've been using DJI OSMO Pocket, really nice gimbal easy to use and reliable. Have a nice week , Marcos.

Hey Marcos! I have a dji action and 4 Osmo mini. All great options. The biggest issue w the dji action cam is the image and coloring is not as nice as a GP 9 or 8. Now the GoPro has a media mod on it which helps create heat.... it my problem, GoPro built it so it shouldn’t over heat IMO. The dji I have an adaptor for so I can run my wireless mics without needing a “media mod” hot box. What I’m going to do is run that camera on me pointing in the car aince that’s usually the smaller image while driving. Then let the GoPro pointing forward run with no case in it

@@RobertMitchell that's a really cool solution. I hope that keep your content nice and safe, I know how frustrating can be when the media is not on your way. Thanks for the great content and also for the Yaris update.
