@Wesley Dunn Souness said it deliberately to belittle the English women's achievement because he is a bitter Scot. Remember Andy Murray saying he had a choice of 31 teams to support in a World Cup... i.e. anyone except England. They are all the same.

When Souness said it's a man's game he was commenting on a *men's football match* i.e. a man's game. If Shebahn Aherne was talking about a furore on Twitter I'd just like to say that, in case she didn't receive the memo, Twitter doesn't represent the real world! The Twitterati who make the most noise are almost invariably people who have no interest in the subject they complain about and regardless are an insignificant percentage of the population.

Gramme Souness has forgotten more about football than all those whining about what he said actually know. Its pathetic. Have some respect. The game he was referring to was indeed a man's game, with 22 of them on the field. Strangely, in the women's game there are 22 women playing. It's a figure of speech.
@willcampbell8829

When the money in the women's game starts to grow, you'll see that 22 women number start to shrink a bit and the mugs that are offended by these innocent comments will be among the loudest cheerleaders for the men masquerading as women in the womens game. Just BONKERS ;)
@skylar7740

There was nothing wrong with what Souness said and I for one am sick and tired of people feigning being offended. The fact is men's football has been around much longer than women's football, men's football is harder and more skilled then women's football and men's football is far more popular. Men's and women's football is a completely different game and if women want women's football to be popular then they need to go to all the matches and buy the merchandise. However, they won't because even women aren't particularly interested in it.

The ladies might want to remember that the ‘mens’ game subsidises the ‘womens’ game because women aren’t interested in womens football ! Technically it IS a “man’s” game. There was nothing wrong with what GS said, those offended by it would have been offended by something on Sunday because they have to be offended each day of the week ! I don’t see how we’re heading toward equality when a man has to tip-toe around and be careful of what he says in fear of upsetting the poor, sensitive little ladies. ‘Lady up’ girls !!!

Agreed, the mens game has been around for over 150 years and has slowly built up its infrastructure. The woman come along and demand equality in the game without contributing. Women are more than welcome to build their game like the men had to, but it seems they would rather the men fund it and then gripe about it.

Agreed, who paid the men when football was in its infancy? The answer is nobody paid them, it was started at amateur level. It wasn’t until the 1880’s that Blackburn Olympic would give their players imaginary jobs in the factories and pay them supplement’s (expenses). When professionals were allowed in the game, the wages were about just over double what an average worker would get paid, and this was only because of the shortness of the career. Women’s professional football today has been built on the back of the man’s game (fact). No professional woman’s team or league for that matter has come about from a grass roots level. If women want the same pay as men then they need to build their own professional clubs and leagues like the men did. As things stand the woman’s premier league has been funded by clubs who play in and around the existing mens premier league and promoted by them. I don’t know of any women’s club that plays in the WPL that has been self built like all the clubs that currently play in the mens leagues. One look at history shows us in the mens game that many players had to fund their own boots, shin pads, and in many cases pantaloons (shorts). At some clubs the men had the cost of their club jerseys deducted from their pay and had to wash it themselves. The woman’s game we see today has had it very easy in comparison to the mens infancy years and decades. When woman’s football is big enough for them to build their own infrastructure then all power to them, but let’s face it, without the mens game it would have very little funding if any.

I asked some female football fans I know whether they found Souness's comments offensive, and not one of them did. Souness was doing punditry work for a Premier League match, not a Women's Super League match, which involved only male players, so by definition it was a man's game. The idea that his comments could possibly be offensive, or to try and link them to England's success in the Women's Euros a few weeks ago, is beyond daft. Now I did think that Richard Keys and Andy Gray's behaviour and comments however long ago that was (I think it was 2011 or 2012), were genuinely sexist and they deserved the criticism that they received for that; it wasn't banter it was an angry rant about female officials. There's a clear dividing line IMO.

When men play football it's a mans game, when women play football it's a womens game, both are fantastic and I have great respect for what our lioness's have just achieved,fantastic but the two are worlds apart, anyone who knows anything about football will know exactly what was meant by Souness

How can celebrating being a man be negative. There's nothing inherently anti-woman in saying men can get stuck in which is "manly". Newsflash, being a man isn't a bad thing.

Problem is Graeme sadly watched the wrong game. Had he the great misfortune to have witnessed the United-Brentford game he certainly could not have misspoken that same phrase. Although no doubt he would have been similarly pilloried for suggesting that was a Men V lazy, overpaid, outclassed, virtue signalling, badge ignoring, legacy destroying, petulant children’s game. Yeah, I expect that would offend some pillock somewhere too…

I am so very sick of all this!!!! Why do the 'moaners' keep saying "In today's world he should not have done it"? Surely, the problem is really..., that we are allowing the offended so much credence.., instead of just saying 'don't be silly!' and moving on. Mother Earth would be so much better if....., OOOPS! Sorry..., probably can't say that now either!

When you take the complaints of a fringe group of weirdos seriously instead of ignoring them, which in this case is the only sane thing to do, you legitimise them. The appreciation of Womens "professional" Football nowadays has to come with a thick slice of lying to yourself and others.

You can't give offence, you can only take it. People need to grow up and be worried about real issues like erm being lied to by the government, cost of living, not what someone said about it being a man's game and not a premadonna's game. 🤦‍♂️ these people need to get a grip!

I'm confused by the guests argument. On the one hand, she says Souness didn't mean to offend, on the other she was suggesting people are over-sensitive and were offended so he shouldn't of said it. Is this literally the level argument we've come to?
